Well, they've pretty much had that market cornered since I can remember - so this is of little surprise to me in all honesty...it's almost like McDonalds saying that they see a future for fast-food's!

Can't really argue differently. Glad the switch has happened.

The only way that Nintendo will produce a true successor to the 3DS is if the Switch ends up falling below expectations in terms of unit sales. That is unlikely to happen. The most likely scenario is that the next Nintendo "handheld" will be a smaller and cheaper version of the Switch that comes without a dock.

Considering their handhelds, including the switch as much as they'd like to deny it's a handheld, have performed consistently better than their home consoles, I'd say it's clear they have a future.

I should hope they see a future for handhelds considering 100% of the hardware they manufacture is handheld....

Notice every time they talk about "future for handhelds" and 3DS they talk about the current install base and the N2DSXL? It's not a couched way of saying "we plan on making a new non-Switch-based completely separate platform and library next year" They're saying "hey, 3DS still has more years of life to go, it's not dead yet, people still buy it!"

As everyone keeps saying new hardware form factors for Switch are certainly probable to fill the HARDWARE need of a smaller more pocketable machine. But it should be the same library.

My switch died last week. Played some wii u. Due to a storm I had no electricity on Sunday. Luckily my 3ds was almost fully charged - played Dr Mario recently, and I decided to give 3D land another try. I started it once and somehow couldn't get into it. It really got.me hooked.and I have been playing.it a lot. Finished it today. So much fun. This made me realize again that the latest technology isnt necessary to have fun. I would really like to see the 3ds supported for some.more years or even have a fully bc successor.

@Pupito
Exactly!
The dual screen has its benefits! Layton, etrian etc.

@NEStalgia Pretty much. Nintendo is going to say what they think they need to say to keep people buying 3DS games while they grow the Switch's install base.

They're definitely not going to make a new dedicated handheld, though, with how successful the Switch has been.

3ds will live on until the switch hardware and power requirements can fit into a 3dsxl size package ( 2 years min). Will also get a switch XL with a larger 1080p screen (maybe in the same package size with no bezels so current Joycons are compatable) within a couple of years. This will allow the same games to run in a base handle held, a enhanced semi-portable like the current switch and offer plenty of full console power given more power draw. Also this would not leave current switch owners stranded or feeling abandoned.

Teaming with NVidia was a great more. The development path for this is already in play.

Only problem with this is the small handheld will still have a problem dealing with power and heat pushing 1080 to a TV so will likely be Handheld only so not switch branded.

There is also an issue of backward comparability, No game system has ever had a library of 1200 games before and Nintendo will not walk away from that. So future pure handheld will be backwards 3ds compatible.

Just my predictions of course....

@Pupito
Two screens work only on the ds the wii u was poorly conceived. The gamepad was just a gimmick which was seldom used in a meaningful way and sometimes made gameplay more annoying. And it made the console unnecessarily expensive.
The 3ds has been perfect so far as dual screen gaming is concerned.

Just BTW they could have made an etrian game for the.wii u

I'm still waiting for the 1DS Micro...

I love the 3DS. And while I the Switch is great too, I'm really looking forward to a proper pocketable replacement for the 3DS. If it happens to be a Switch Mini, then great, but a dedicated more powerful small handheld machine would be used by me far more than the Switch. I still use my 3DS more than Switch, due to it having a far more diverse range of games that I actually want to play.

Frankly speaking Nintendo believes so because handheld gaming is the rage in Japan. For some weird reason Japan does all the things America doesn't and vice versa.

How long do you think the life of the New 2DS will be. I honestly give it like, two-three years tops. I'm one of those people who believe that Nintendo is just bluffing about supporting the 3DS til 2020 or something.

I would honestly be surprised to see any Nintendo first party support past 2018 for 2DS/3DS. I expect (and really hope) to see some for of direct 3DS/2DS replacement before 2019, let alone 2020.
