if your son has never owned a 3DS or 3DS XL then go for the New3DS.

So it won't be on sale more through Amazon? Right now it's like $192 for the red and $195 for the black. Do you think it's worth waiting and fighting the black Friday crowds? I hate shopping on black Friday. I always worry they will be out of them too. So I don't know if the $20 savings is worth it? I do use swagbucks and have a $25 gift card I can use towards any of those places. I'm contemplating going ahead and getting it through Amazon.

@hmp8982: Amazon usually does match pricing, specially when Walmart is involved.

If you wait around, Amazon has had the New 3DS for 188 or something...

i'm a little worried a lot of places will sell out on Black Friday

@hmp8982, I'd add to the echo chamber that the original XL is the way to go. At four years old, your son won't miss the improved 3D, probably doesn't give a lick about improved processing speeds, and the extra buttons are typically only used in an extraneous/optional fashion. As others have said, the vast majority of games that come out for the 3DS in the future will work just fine on any 3DS system. So far, Nintendo has published or announced plans to publish about 20 retail 3DS games across 2015 and early 2016. Of those, only one of them is exclusive to the New 3DS (Xenoblade Chronicles 3D).

Also, you mention that you want to buy on Amazon — Nintendo just announced that their Black Friday deal for the original 3DS XL is $130, with Super Mario 3D Land installed, available at Amazon and Walmart. Comes in bright blue or bright red. The New XL Black Friday deal is $180, not on Amazon, with no game included. Grab an amiibo reader (if your son gets any amiibo-compatible 3DS games) for around $20, and you're good to go.

My two cents. Either way, I think the kid'll be super happy. I know I'd be at that age — good on you for being a good dad.

Thanks! I'm actually the mom! We have gone back and forth about which one to get. When I realized I'd have to buy the amiibo reader I thought the newer one would be the better way to go. Does the old one come with the AC adapter? Because I noticed the new one does not and I'd have to buy that separate.

I've already seen the old XL for sale for $130 on a couple of sites.

this is really a tough decision. Because even if I spend $130 on the old one.. then buy the amiibo thing.. That's $150. With the other one, It's $195 on amazon.. but I can use my $25 off and I don't need the amiibo thing... making it $170 plus I need the adapter which is $8. So $178 total... I get the new one. I also get more swagbuck points on the new one. Almost another $10 gift card worth. And it's the newest one.

Does the amiibo accessory work well?

@hmp8982: The Amiibo accessory works well.

I don't find it very useful and think that Amiibo is mostly a money grab but if your child enjoys them and you are willing to buy him amiibo then it's your call.

@hmp8982: Aw, man, what an embarrassing mistake! I thought I saw the word "dad" somewhere in my confused brain. Sorry, about that.

It does seem like the price difference is pretty negligible when you add it all up that way. The old one does come with a game, though. And yeah, you won't need the amiibo reader if your son doesn't have any amiibo-compatible games. What sort of games is he into?

hmp8982

Yeah.. doesn't the wii u work with the amiibos without the accessory as well? We have a wii U and could designate those kinds of games to the Wii U.

It's okay!
He loves Mario games, smash brothers and mario kart on the wii. I was going to buy Yoshi's Wooly World for the Wii U. I'm thinking the amiibo feature on the 3ds XL isn't going to be a huge deal since we have the Wii U as well.

Yeah, I'd agree. Amiibo usage seems to be a lot more prominent on Wii U games than 3DS games (here's a chart that shows all the currently compatible games, if you need it). Tons of Mario on the 3DS, too — Super Mario 3D Land (if he likes the 3D entries), New Super Mario Bros. 2 (if he's more into the side-scrollers), Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon for a little Luigi love, Super Smash Bros., and the stellar Mario Kart 7. I'd wager Yoshi's Wooly World will be a solid bet for a four-year-old Mario fan, too, and it's something you can play together.

Yeah.. we love the games that give the classic feel. We have 3D World for the Wii U as well. He also loves the lego games.. especially Batman and Marvel superhero games. I can see there is no shortage of games out there! So if I can just make a decision on the system to buy.. we will be good to go.

the small New 3DS is 199.00 on amazon right now. It's the one that comes with Animal Crossing Happy Home Designer and two cover plates plus an amiibo card.
