Topic: New Nintendo 3DS XL C-Stick Problem

Hey everyone,
I wonder if anyone has similar problems with the C-Stick of the New Nintendo 3DS XL as I am encountering.

I got my model on friday and set everything up without any problems. The first games I played with the stick worked fine. Majoras Mask 3D, Ace Combat Plus and Monster Hunter 4 all worked properly, but not overconvincing... Today I tried out the demo of Ironfall. At first the stick worked; but after 10 to 20 minutes into the game I could not move the stick to the right or down anymore. After this painful expierence I fired up one of the other games and nothing works anymore... I simply can not move the stick to the right or down. A quick google search showed that a bunch of other people had the exact same problems, but no one knows any solutions.

The system settings do not offer any calibration options and the calibration option in Monster Hunter 4 also shows no improvements.

Does anyone encounter similar problems? Any suggestions?

Fortunately I'm not having this issue, but I haven't really used the C-nub much yet. Is it physically unable to move in those directions or the games aren't recognizing the movement anymore?

The latter one. But the c-stick is not very moveable in general, is it? I always thought that the C-Stick is more like a touch sensitive control device...

I know this is a somewhat stupid suggestion, but have you tried turning the system off and then on again?
I know that when my old 3DS had other assorted problems, a reboot would always rectify it.

Nothing is stupid here. But a reboot does not do anything in this case.

But a more general question: do you guys like the c-stick? Maybe my New 3DS is damaged, but I can not imagine to play a game like Resident Evil Revelations as precise as I did with the circle pad pro...

have you tried removing the demo than do a reboot? And than just play one of the 2 games? Maybe something in the demo file is bugging the c-stick movement?

I liken he c stick. It's not as precise as the circle pad pro but it's about 70-80% as percise. Do the C stick recalibration in the settings and if your c stick doesn't move in all directions with the same pressure and still persists after a restart then it's 100% hardware problem and should be replaced. If it's a limited edition new 3ds then call nintendo they will repair it and send you a Majoras mask console back vs returning it at the store you purchased it at because they will just replace it with a regular new 3ds xl.

I just tried it out before I went to bed yesterday and it actually worked in monster hunter again. It is really strange.

You mean the calibration option in monster hunter, right? Because in the system settings is no option for the c-stick. Nevertheless I am going to replace my unit, because it is a piece of cake with the Amazon customer service and there is definitely something wrong with it.
I am going to post here again after I got my replacement unit. But I have to wait until the next weekend because of the 7-day transfer limit of the 3DS.
Thanks for the feedback. = )

I noticed the same issue, since I merely tested the C-Stick with Super Smash Brothers shortly, after I bought the Ambassador Edition, thinking everything was alright (just a bit imprecise). Now I was lucky enough to grab a Special Edition of Majoras Mask but the camera does not like to move down, going back to Smash Brothers and I came to a simple conclusion: Sweat! (and other liquids). Quick inputs work, most of the time but constant normal input methods somehow results physically in "up" and not "down" input. Now I also tried pushing the button down with my nail and it is indeed no software issue. Either it is flawed Hardware Design or many New 3DS were built improperly, the prior is more likely I guess

So the Suggestion: First test with your nails if it works, if it does you really need to dry yourself as well as the New 3DS properly and keep it that way. If it does not work, then you really need to consider what option would be best for you, send it to repairs or deal with it? After all, if you naturally are rather wet/fatty (not in terms of body weight), then the issue would persist....

If this is true, then Nintendo made a major design flaw. A lot of people get sweaty hands while playing video games. In my case it only happens in intense sequences... But I read similar reports on other sites. Hopefully the replacement unit solves my problem. If not... Then I would have a big problem, because I heard that you cannot downgrade to an older model regarding the system transfer. Oh dear, this would be the first video game system which is incompatible with my hands... Oh man...
PS
Contrary to my earlier post (No. 8) the stick is making trouble again...

The C-stick is horrible. I also have a problem with downward movements. I tried playing Res Evil Revelations with it and that was an absolute joke. Why they didnt make this thing a tiny circle pad is beyond me. It's literally only useful for camera movement.

I agree. It may be that I'm just not used to its location yet, but it was not helpful at all in Smash Bros. I haven't had a chance to play my copy of Majora's Mask, yet, but I imagine it will be fine for camera control. It's just so small and out of the way...

I don't use it much in Smash Bros unless I consciously remember to use it, but I always blamed the fact that the game has been out for a while before I had a C Stick and I'm used to not using it. I think in Smash it's more suited to smash attacks on the ground than using it in the air, since you have to jump to do that and that requires pressing X first.

If you add me, I need to at least know you or I won't add you back.

C stick works fine for me. Idk, don't have any issues and it works well enough moving the camera around in Monster Hunter (which is constantly). I mean, for a compact little analog it does the job pretty well. Of course a real analog would be better but the Cstick ain't bad at all imo.

It only seems like a big issue because only those with problems are making topics and commenting. This happens at the launch of every game system ever. After about a month, people start to realize it's not normal behavior and go straight to customer support.

My C-stick is in working order, and after about 2 hours of getting used to it in Monster Hunter, I love it. Metal Gear Solid 3D controls fine with the C-stick. The real problem is that aiming and shooting uses ZL and ZR, as opposed to L and R.

@KongFu
It stinks that you're having problems with your new New system. Get in touch with Nintendo's customer support; they'll fix it right up. I've sent in about 5 systems to get fixed, and they've done fantastic jobs. It also helps that Nintendo has some of the best customer support I've worked with.

Being a nub may be due to the space allowed in the model. Keep in mind they switched to micro SD for this reason

I discovered a great test for the C-Stick. Open up any Youtube video, and use the C-Stick in every direction to control video speed. It gives you a percentage. For me, left right & up will go to 100% equally as easilly. Down only goes to about 60% max and its very jumpy...

UPDATE: Today my new unit was delivered. And now I can confirm it: The C-Stick of my first unit was definitely broken. I compared the responsiveness of both sticks in the home screen side by side. And the new one works as it should, while the old one stuttered and stopped just after scrolling over 4 icons (downwards). I also tried out RE-Revelations and I am relived to tell you that the controls are far more fluid and precise as with the former unit. The circle pad pro still performs better, but it's bulky form makes this option in my opinion inferior to the controls of the New 3DS XL. Hopefully this positive impression of the performance lasts. If not, I will post here again.

I entered youtube via the browser. And it shows no percentage. Only how fast I fast-forward: e.g. 2,0 x. But backwards I only get 0,25 x... I am a little bit confused. = ) Are we talking about the same thing?

I would have liked to see a different c-stick implementation, with more preciseness and ease of control.

If possible, I would have liked a small camera to monitor the top of the thumb, similar to the camera used for the super-stability head tracking.

Once the thumb presses on the c-stick the camera would use the position of the thumb as centre and then movements of the thumb over the c-stick would be translated to control motions.

The camera would use the thumb nail as a precise positional reference during 'stick' movements.

I still want a circle pad pro option for my New 3DSXL, and calibration settings for the C-stick.
