It lives on in my heart. If I cared much about Dragon Quest I'd be legit disappointed. To me playing a 3DS game in 2D feels terribly wrong (if it has polygonal graphics at least).
I concede, however, that most people don't care. Perhaps if we'd started out with the New 3DS things could have been different. 3D on the original system is hard to get used to and tends to put people off.
What exactly constitutes a "half-hearted" 3D effect? I mean, such things certainly exist in sprite-based games, but if the game uses 3D environments it doesn't seem to me like there needs to be that much effort involved. The developer makes those environments and the 3DS shows them in all their dimensions. Rarely do I see a game where it somehow doesn't work.
And y'know, it may not always blow your mind, but depth perception can be a handy thing to have. In some games, where there's a lot of open space and your perspective is low to the ground, 3D greatly improves one's spatial awareness. Indeed, when I was playing Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed on Wii U, I actually found myself seriously wishing for 3D, because it was so hard to judge distance in some places.
Well with SE branding a 2ds model for the game it makes sense. That is not the reason why of course but little reason to push if they are backing the non 3d model. I don't care either way but I feel bad for those that can't have it, still the game will be loads of fun.

Xenoblade 3D is a good example of where they used almost no 3D. They can choose to artificially cut the draw distance on the depth of 3D objects. In Xenoblade, it's cut to something like 10m from the camera. Really short.
@Dezzy Oh, really? Unfortunate, but I guess they must have needed to save rendering power. I mean, at least you can see why Xenoblade would struggle to run in 3D. Compare that to the Pokémon games, which really have no excuse that I can think of. You can't display so much as a one-on-one fight in 3D without destroying the framerate? Really?
