I just bought a 3ds an it is refusing to play 3ds games, I've found out this may be because I have set the wrong region. Now I know how to change the region but the complication is that Australia is not an option in the regions that I can select... I've heard the 3ds is region locked and I was wondering if there is way around it to make the 3ds games work or is there a region I cn select that would make the games work (Australia compatible?)
Where did you buy your 3DS from?
It sounds like you must have an American system or something, which can't play PAL games (from Europe/Australia).
There's not really anything you can do about it unfortunately if this is the case, besides from buying games which is the same region as your 3DS, or buying a new 3DS from Europe/Australia.
Yeah, I would definitely check with the retailer/seller, as well as the listing. If you bought it from overseas, they will usually specify which region it is, and that could be your error if it was listed as being NA. If they didn't, you should return it or file a complaint.
If you bought it locally, well, there's really no excuse for them selling you a foreign 3DS and not telling you about it, but again, check the listing.

PAL stands for Phase Alternating Line, but that's just technobabble. It's a term commonly used to describe the region including Europe and Oceania. Since TVs and media are formatted differently around the world, a PAL system won't play games that are from North America (NTSC) and vice versa.
Bad news =/ I would contact the seller anyway. If nothing else, you can try to sell/trade your 3DS for a PAL one.

Well thanks guys for your replies, looks like I will have to try and get my money back and buy a console that has PAL format. Thanks very much everyone!
Ah, the good old days when Nintendo handhelds didn't have to worry about the games they played since the consoles were not region-locked. Too bad this totally changed with the Nintendo 3DS, and it's sad about the fact that there are still people out there whom are oblivious to the concept of region-locks.
Wishing this world would pay any sort of attention to the smaller details.
Go to System Settings ---- Other Settings, and then Profile. There, you should find the place to change region.
Or if you want to watch a movie DVD from a different region, you can follow this tutorial to make the disc region free: http://drm-assistant.com/dvdtips/how-to-bypass-dvd-region-cod...
