Author Profile

Liam grew up with a PlayStation controller in his hands and a love for Metal Gear Solid. Nowadays, he's found playing the latest and greatest PS5 games as well as supporting Derby County. That last detail is his downfall.

Video games have always been my main passion, and I enjoyed writing growing up so it made sense to combine the two! I love a good story in games as well as a neat, inviting hub area.

Experience

Liam began his career as a freelancer, before joining Push Square as Senior Staff Writer in 2019. Some time around 2022 he became Assistant Editor on the site.

His work takes in all kinds of coverage but sees him focusing mainly on news, reviews and guides for the site.

I enjoy creating guide campaigns the most, because I like gathering together all relevant / potential information to achieve a sense of “completionism”. By documenting this, I help other people find the items they’re looking for, or beat a difficult section of a game.

Timeline

  • 2016: Begins his career as a freelance writer
  • 2019: Joins Push Square as Senior Staff Writer
  • 2022: Becomes Assistant Editor of Push Square

Qualifications & Awards

  • University Degree in Journalism - Sheffield Hallam University (2016)

Expertise

Liam’s first console was a PlayStation 1. From there he’s owned every console released by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.

His favourite console of all time is the PlayStation 4, thanks to a packed roster of games that fulfils his tastes - think story-focused, action-adventure games/RPGs. Having grown up with PlayStation, it’s the console series he’s spent the most time playing by far.

I love action-adventure games/RPGs. I like engaging with a deep and interesting story while exploring an interesting world full of unique gameplay sequences and interactions.

Feature: Summer Game Fest - What's It Like to Attend?

Industry events are generally very secretive, so I wanted to document what it was like to attend Summer Game Fest for the first time, as well as my experiences around and outside of the show in LA.

  • Review Bombslinger (Switch eShop)

    Bombing the Wild West

We were big fans of Super Bomberman R upon the launch of Nintendo Switch. Its continued focus on multiplayer brought players together to enjoy a franchise that had laid dormant on Nintendo hardware for nearly ten years. However, its single-player campaign that left a little bit to be desired, and it’s here where developer...

  • Review Super Daryl Deluxe (Switch eShop)

    Too cool for school

They always say you’ll have the time of your life at school, but things couldn’t be further from the truth for Daryl in Super Daryl Deluxe. Newly enrolled at Water Falls High School, he quickly becomes wrapped up in a textbook profiteering business with fellow pupils Alan and Paul, but as time passes, Daryl begins to discover...

  • Review The Trail: Frontier Challenge (Switch eShop)

    Escape to the country

The majority of the time, the term “walking simulator” is used in a derogatory manner to downplay many quality experiences. However, in the case of The Trail: Frontier Challenge, there sadly isn’t a better fit. From developer 22cans and the legendary (though some might say infamous) designer Peter Molyneux, this...

  • Review Subsurface Circular (Switch eShop)

    Illustrious train riding

A little less conversation, a little more action, please. Lyrics don’t get more popular than that, and yet it’s this Elvis Presley quote that Subsurface Circular flies directly in the face of. From the mind behind Thomas Was Alone, Mike Bithell’s latest outing is all about the spoken interaction, and it makes for one...

  • Review Grid Mania (Switch eShop)

    A puzzling great

Looks can be deceiving, and when it comes to Grid Mania, what appears to be an inherently simple puzzle game is actually anything but. With an incredibly reasonable price point to boot, developer QubicGames’ latest Nintendo Switch title deserves a place on your system. Played out on a 4x4 grid that can extend to 6x6 when things...

  • Review Escape Trick: 35 Fateful Enigmas (Switch eShop)

    Derren Brown's knock-off

Whenever someone reminisces about the “escape from a locked room” genre, their first thoughts are usually of the Nonary games, 999: Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors on Nintendo DS and its follow up, Zero Escape: Virtue’s Last Reward on Nintendo 3DS. They were defining releases on their respective consoles, and for...

  • Review Detention (Switch eShop)

    Best in class

Every so often, a little-known game with much smaller expectations than its AAA counterparts will come along and completely knock your socks off. Celeste managed it last month with its intricate 2D platforming, and no less than a month later, another crowning achievement has made its way onto the Nintendo eShop. Detention, from...

  • Review Pool Billiard (Switch eShop)

    First round exit

There has been a surprising amount of pool-based games released onto the Nintendo eShop as of late, hasn’t there? We have the simply named Pool, which looks to be giving Tennis a run for its money in the award for most generic title of 2018, as well as Premium Pool Arena that looks to add a fair amount of customisation into the...

  • Review Old Man's Journey (Switch eShop)

    An important pilgrimage

Old Man's Journey is one of those games that’s hard to talk about without venturing into spoiler territory. As a short but sweet experience, it’s the story that takes centre stage here, with the gameplay confined to the audience of the auditorium. It’s definitely not going to be a game for everyone, but does this...

  • Review Layers Of Fear: Legacy (Switch eShop)

When the horror joins you under the covers

The horror genre hasn’t had the best of starts when it comes to the Nintendo Switch. Don’t Knock Twice was less than thrilling, and Perception is something we’d rather forget about. Next, up steps Layers Of Fear: Legacy, a port of a title from 2016 that has been re-built to take advantage of the...

  • Review The Darkside Detective (Switch eShop)

    Scooby dude

The Darkside Detective really wants you to know that its development team grew up watching TV and movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s. Whether it’s the point-and-click based gameplay that hearkens back to classics such as The Secret Of Monkey Island and Day Of The Tentacle or the referential-heavy dialogue, there’s always a pop culture...

  • Review Mad Carnage (Switch eShop)

A bit of a tame road

It’s safe to say that Mad Max: Fury Road has become a bit of a modern classic in the years since its 2015 cinema launch. Praised for its exhilarating action, humour, and narrative focus, its influence can of course be felt the most in the film industry, but videogames are also looking for a piece of the action. Mad Carnage is...

  • Review Fantasy Hero ~unsigned legacy~ (Switch eShop)

    A Vita throwaway

Fantasy Hero ~unsigned legacy~ arrives on Nintendo Switch four years after its original release on PlayStation Vita, where it received a rather middling reception at best. Some praised its varied stats, skills and upgrade customisation, while others criticised it for a bland plot and uninspired combat mechanics. So in 2018, how does...

  • Review Tennis (Switch eShop)

    Simple name, even simpler game

When Wii Sports helped to launch Nintendo Wii back in 2006, the Tennis mode was lauded as one of the reasons to own the console and an instant hit with gamers of any age or skill level. Its simple yet addictive gameplay was easy to pick up on and follow, and on top of that it shipped with four other excellent sports to...

  • Review Super One More Jump (Switch eShop)

    Another before bed

If you were to ever develop a 2D platformer in this day and age, releasing it hot off the heels of Super Meat Boyprobably isn’t the greatest of ideas. However, that’s exactly what the team at Premo Games has done with Super One More Jump, a former mobile title that has been completely reworked for Nintendo Switch. So after...

  • Review I Am Setsuna (Switch eShop)

    Wondering how to pronounce 'Setsuna'

Much has been made of the launch line-up for the Nintendo Switch, with some describing it as underwhelming and lacking in exciting software besides The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild. That's certainly debatable, and one game that may have slipped under some people's radars is I Am Setsuna, a JRPG that...

The updated version also brings with it a couple of new additions, most notably the ability to play the whole game cooperatively with a friend. The trailer shows off...

  • News Nintendo Plans To Continuously Update Fire Emblem Heroes With New Stories, Modes and Characters

    Updates planned every two weeks

Following its launch last week, Nintendo has detailed the sort of post-launch content we can expect for Fire Emblem Heroes. Speaking with IGN, game director Kouhei Maeda said the following: "We plan to add new stories continually after release, at a pace of about two a month or one every two weeks." As well as that,...

  • News The Jackbox Party Pack 3 Announced For Nintendo Switch

    Party rival

1-2-Switch may have a rival when it comes to choosing that all important game at a party, as The Jackbox Party Pack 3 has been announced for the Nintendo Switch. Developer and publisher Jackbox Games took to Twitter to make the announcement, as well as stating that we can expect the title soon; it arrived on various other platforms last...

    Play Ball!

Nintendo has released a fresh trailer that gives a little more insight into how Mario Sports Superstars will play, having recently confirmed its release date and amiibo details, among other things. The latest footage focuses entirely on the sport of Baseball, as we see the likes of Luigi and Bowser pick up the bat in the hopes of a...
