Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition Estimated Switch File Size Revealed

I would like to get the physical edition. Should I get one, it would be a good time to watch the movie "The Wizard".

I can't believe they're charging 25 quid for this. Well I can actually because it's Nintendo but still. It would be a perfect title for NSO members.

@OorWullie : Perhaps the most annoying thing about this is that the original ROMs aren't playable. They should have been included as part of the package by default.

@OorWullie So a game that is basically a compilation of NES games would be perfect for the people they are already charging to play NES games? There is a reason why Nintendo is really good at business, and it is not doing things like that.

@Sisilly_G That would have added more value for sure. Free for NSO members and a physical edition including the ROMs.

Not that I think it’s going to be bad but as previously said, this looks perfect for a NSO bonus, not a £25 (!) standalone release. I’d expect a more ambitious game spanning more consoles than just NES for that price.

@Poodlestargenerica It's a compilation of special stages with an emphasis on competitive play, which makes it perfect for NSO. It's not the same as having access to the full games. They're already charging us for NSO anyway, adding this on top would only have added even more value. Also, each challenge could have linked to the full game, like it does through the NSO tab.

They released a physical Tetris 99 with some extra features. This could have been free for NSO with the full ROM's included with a physical edition, and it still would have done well.

Wait this is a game? I honestly thought it was a tournament of sorts lol! I can’t believe I didn’t know that.

Think I'll just stick with NES Remix 1 and 2 on my Wii U. I like the up to 8 players local play aspect, but there's a clear lack of content here for a package that costs more than the two NES Remix games combined. Maybe there's more they haven't revealed yet, but not impressed so far

You can't play the full version of games which are only a few KB in size. This is ridiculous.

Guaranteed nothing else is coming, they're putting 13 art cards (one for each title) in the physical edition

This is such an uninspired cash grab from Nintendo. Even straight ports of the NES Remix games would have offered better value.

So Nintendo shifted from including ROMs of previous games in whole (I believe animal crossing has them?) to thinking of them as full titles and asking people to pay full price (or a subscription).

There is absolutely no way they would release full roms again, especially for a game like this. This is designed to get some more value out of older titles for a low cost while reacquainting people with these titles to encourage them to subscribe.

They'll be looking at NSO subscription rates in the wake of this release as a test for future monetization - perhaps this is even someone at Nintendo's project looking at how the next iteration of NSO/virtual console might work

Edit: to add to this, we'll never see animal crossing (GameCube) offered emulated by Nintendo for this reason, or if we do, they'll strip the NES games out (or put timers on them)

I think it’s cool they are doing something fresh and new with old NES games. It is one of their most popular and cherished consoles that a lot of us keeps returning to over and over again.

Maybe it’s not quite as fresh and new as when they released the first NES Remix, but it is still Nintendo doing something new with their old games and that is interesting to many people.

Sure, you can find much more value for no money by digging into community-created content based on their old games by using romhacks and Retro Achievements, but this is content that is made by Nintendo themself and that still counts for something.

It always shocks me anytime anyone even slightly complains about the fee for NSO. "They're already charging for NSO", etc... I mean, it's soooo cheap as it is, you get a bunch of stuff, and you have to have some appreciation that it covers costs for the servers as well as highly encourages game development. Not to mention games like bomberman 64, Mario 35, tetris 99, etc that have given me more value than many full price games.

As for this title, the competitive nature of the game and throwback to the championship days is incredibly nostalgic for a kid that competed in an event here in Canada back in 1988 in a giant nintendo truck in a farmers parking lot, where I won a copy of the movie THE WIZARD and watched it 100000000x.
I already pre-ordered the special edition. I think it's awesome.

This is a case where I would just download from the eShop since I already had all the games on this collection on my real NES.

My favorite part of WarioWare was always 8-volt's part. I'll probably treat this game as a big version of that.

I’ve thought all this time that some sort of summer video game competition was going on. So since I think those competition tournaments are kinda lame (no offense to those who partake, just not my thing) I’ve never clicked a single link about this thing. And now I find out it’s actually a game! Lol. I had no clue.

This feels like a game-mode for a game that doesn't exist.

I remember the NES remix for 3ds, I was so excited to get that and then so utterly let down when I realized it was nothing but select bite size bits of games I loved. Never going down that road again. If it’s not full games, there’s just no point in getting it.

when i first saw this, i assumed it was a compilation of classic NES games, with achievements added.

(i think about it alot. an achievement be "beat mario 3 without using whistles," another could be "in smb, collect every coin in world x-x")

I think there is a lot of misunderstanding on what this game is about (Maybe Nintendo has not been very clear on the advertisement on this).

1) Its not a compilation of NES games
2) Its not the third game of the NES Remix series that was on Wii U/3DS.

So what is then? Its a game based on the Nintendo World Championship event that has been around since 1990. Its mostly a speedrunning event where people compete with high scores on sections of games. A competitive game by nature (meaning that its not for everyone) where leaderboards are the sole reason for it to exist. Expecting something different will only lead to dissapointment in this case.

Sounds like a fun game. I've been playing the NES remix games this past week and they're great games. I can see this new game being a fun party game.

Like many others, I love 2D games but this speedrun compilation doesn't interest me at all. I too preferred the NES Remix format. I hope Nintendo keeps making interesting 2D games.

I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Not a minigame fan, and after watching the trailer... well if all those "moments" are 3-5 seconds, then 150 of them are not going to last you very long.

I've "registered my interest" for the physical edition cause I like those, but man the game itself is a pass normally. NES Remix wasn't great, everything had a floaty emulated feel to it.

Hope they've got 1-2 substantial announcements for the year still in the next Direct.

I'm completely buying into the nostalgia. Guess I'm just a huge sucker for anything retro. I don't care if the game's any good (it probably wil be), but I just want the retro stuff for my collection.

I agree it is silly. It works out to be less than $5 per month for the NSO expansion and people still complain. I guess they'll just complain about anything. The ONLY THING that would give me pause is if it doesn't just seamlessly carry over to the next console. That was annoying. Having to pay a fee to redownload Virtual Console games to the Wii U that we had already paid for on the Wii (I paid it anyway and redownloaded all of them of course).

Pre-orders are up on the UK store now! I managed to secure one earlier. Don't know how rare this'll be 🤷🏻‍♂️
