I'm really glad that the Deluxe Edition actually comes with a cart. I was worried when I first saw it that it was going to be like the Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon release

We need more eshop titles like this. This looks like a blast, and might get me to purchase those NSO NES controllers if I get sucked into this, which I think I will. That deluxe edition is gonna be scalped so hard. Also multiplayer is an awesome feature that everyone seems to be overlooking.

Also I love how competitive the UI feels, even showing the inputs and the timer every where like a streamer speed running.

EDIT: After reading some comments I don't think people realize how bad the emulation quality was in NES Remix. Also how really 85% of challenges like "stomp on 3 goombas" or "grab the sword" instead of the remixes, which those in itself only had a small handful that were actually cool and not just crummy photoshop filters slapped on a bad rom of the game. This looks much more fleshed out.

The first NES Remix had 16 games, and it offered 204 Challenges, including Bonus and Remix stages, and cost half as much as Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, which has 13 games and "over 150 challenges." Even comparing it against NES Remix 2, which only had 12 games, it still had 169 challenges, including Bonus and Remix stages and cost half as much. This is an objectively worse version of NES Remix Pack, and I kind of wish Nintendo just ported that over instead.

This is just NES Remix with added multiplayer, which is fine, but it's very bizarre to see how far they're leaning into the World Championships branding for a game like this.

Is it just me, or does this feel like a step down from NES Remix?

I'm so tempted to buy the physical edition just to try and put the NES cartridge in my NES.

This seems to be a slightly worse version of Ultimate NES Remix on 3DS....but man if Im not a sucker for these types of games.

Wish it had the remixed levels from NES Remix, were kind of the high point of the games, but either way I'll probably pick this up.

Not really minding that it's got less games than those did given it's just a much stronger lineup of games. The only real duds in this batch in my view are Excitebike and Metroid and the things I dislike about the first Metroid aren't really problems that'd be present in this anyway.

I loved Remix 1 and 2 on WiiU, so I’ll financially back this one in hopes it brings us ESS-en-ee-ess Remix. Then we’d be playing with power. super remixed power

Eh, it's neat, but it really feels like Nintendo is just trying to put out whatever the can to tide people over until next year with the new system.

@KayFiOS The emulation quality in NES Remix was terrible and was if anything just a more fleshed out section of 9-Volts minigames from Wario Ware. It really wasn't anything special and there was only a few remixes, and even fewer that were actually cool. I think people are forgetting what that game actually was. This leans way more into the competitive scene than that did.

The game lineup is a bit disappointing compared to NES Remix Pack, NWC is Ultimate NES Remix but with 4 fewer games and without the Remix mode. I'll pick it up but I would've much rather had NES Remix Pack ported over from Wii U.

@JohnnyMind It's to do with the physical release, those generally need at least 2 months between announce and release.

Looks great, I love the lean on the retro setting and nostalgia with the branding. Finally a way to play NES Remix in multiplayer! This is might be worthy of a Deluxe Set purchase!

Not something that’s for me since I’m bad at like every NES game. It also seems like you’d have to be a speed runner to get the most out of this.

But hopefully whoever ends up buying this enjoys it nonetheless.

@coolioam We'll see how much better it is when we can actually see all the challenges, but I'd bet that there will be quite a few that are recycled from NES Remix Pack. In any case, I don't feel like it's a good trade-off, paying the same price as NESRP and getting fewer challenges over slightly better emulation and a competitive scene that I won't even care about.

I love the little green timer in the bottom right but I just know that the actual games won't be playable here in their entirety because Nintendo

What are the chances this includes each game in full as well as the challenges?

I hate speed runs, so this has no appeal to me at all.

@KayFiOS Well I guess that's more your style if you don't care about the competitiveness side about it, so I cant really speak anything on that. For me I love speed runs and watching them, and seeing Nintendo lean into that in a more main stream sense is awesome. Multiplayer is a big time plus over that game, but with less actual challenges Id like to see it maybe 5 to 10 dollars cheaper. Who knows though, maybe more challenges are introduced through updates.

How do you want me to play like 1990 if two out of the three games featured in that event are missing? This makes me very mildly irritated. half-heartedly shakes fist

Other than that, looks alright. I'll probably stick with NES Remix, but this might be enticing to some other folks.

If this includes the actual full games I'd consider buying it, but if it's nothing but the challenges I'll have to pass. I was never one for speed runs n that kinda stuff!

I loved NES Remix on Wii U and 3DS, so hopefully this is pretty similar. Definitely worth checking out for me.

I can't believe the deluxe edition doesn't include a real NES cartridge. What a scam.

I'd be more inclined to buy if it came with the full NES titles as a bonus, even if they are already on Nintendo Switch Online.

The only thing I hate about it though is the fact that the original full games aren't included (though the full ROMs undoubtedly would be buried in the code somewhere, if not simply used for the minigames themselves given how small they all are).

And 8 player couch multiplayer!!!! Hell yeah!!

@BookhouseBoy : I'm shockingly bad at NES games (and I don't particularly enjoy them either), but I thoroughly enjoyed the NES Remix games, so don't be discouraged if the package otherwise looks appealing.

I mean, it sounded to me in the trailer they said "over 150 challenges", which could mean like 156, but they could have remix sages as unlocks. Then again, having like 300 challenges might be hard too have a leaderboard for each

To be honest, i thought this was a free game added to NSO, in order to let people know more Nintendo games and compete online.
I already have NES remix on my Wii U plus various NES ports on GBA from old times so i'll pass this time

Heads up! As of now in the USA you can only pre-order the digital version.

Now I am even more curious what Switch games Nintendo has in store for the June direct. Must be something good as they reveal this game a month before the direct, even though it's slated for a July release. Maybe it's not all remakes and remasters..

Nah, i am skipping that.

So it's less games/challenges with the added feature of online and local competitions for about the same price. I think it's fair but could have been more. That's my stance on the matter.

I really enjoyed both remix games. We had them both and played them a lot. I'm just not sure the added features warrant a revisit.

I guess this makes up for them taking away Super Mario Bros. 35. Odd that they didn't include the Mysterious Murasame Castle, Punch-Out!!, CluClu Land, Star Tropics, Zoda's Revenge: Star Tropics 2, Faxanadu, Dr. Mario, Donkey Kong Jr., Yoshi's Cookies, and Wrecking Crew in the challenge pack too. Also would be nice if they add the 99 feature into the versus mode as well where if one player become successful it sends obstacles or hazards to the other targeted player so to slow them down.

As a competitor in the original 1990 Nintendo World Championships, I find the lack of Rad Racer and Tetris disappointing.

They would have included this into NSO somehow, I might have checked it out, just to participate in the "championship". But I'm not into speedruns, and I've played all of these games so extensively already. Have fun!

As an NES kid that loved the very idea of Video Game competitions and even participating in a couple in the 90s, I cannot WAIT to get this!

This feels like the kind of thing that should be free to play as long as you have an NSO Expansion Tier subscription. Looks kind of interesting but like something I’d personally only play few times out of curiosity. I guess at least digital is only $30 for those who are interested.

Does the fact this is called NES Edition imply we could get a SNES Edition?

I beat NES Remix a week or two ago. Not in a hurry to play 2. Bought both games before Wii U eShop shut down. Multiplayer could be fun but otherwise, I don't have a need for this one.

Would love a snes or eventually N64 remix. Almost like we get a bit in WarioWare titles... But maybe more fleshed out and serious. These nes titles seem a bit overdone to me now

Looking forward to playing this but in terms of the competitive element, not bothered at all. We all know the leaderboards will be spammed with hacks and people who manage to get the absolute lowest possible score. Us regular folk will have to settle for the 5000th mark and below.

@Sisilly_G The full games are on NSO anyway, this feels like it mostly requires NSO to work.

On other hand, I'm not really a competitive player. I'll be skipping this. But good for people who like such games.

Well, it's not NES Remix. I feel this'll hold my attention for about 20 mins, but I sure am a sucker for collector's editions of physical games. You got me, Nintendo.

My request has been answered! I have been asking for more nes classic remix content for years now.

Ehh, so it's basically NES Remix but they took away the "remixed" challenges which is what made that game so interesting. Getting to play as Samus in Mario 2, Link in Donkey Kong... but this seems to be just the games in their original form. This one might be a pass for me.

I remember people really wanted an "SNES Remix" and "N64 Remix," which never happened. This being called "NES Edition" implies to me that there will be other editions based on different consoles. So that's kinda neat, but again, if I can't play as Yoshi in Donkey Kong Country, for example... what's the point?

It wasn't just crossovers, either. NES Remix was basically a bunch of ROM hacks that changed the original games up in all sorts of interesting ways. Super Mario Bros is now an auto runner in one challenge, and in the next, everything is silhouetted so the Goombas blend in with the bushes in the background. It was really neat.

Perhaps I'm judging this too soon, but this feels like a lazy effort to fill out their schedule. Which concerns me a bit for the rest it the year. Another gripe is how small the actual screen is where the action is taking place. More than 50% of the screen real estate is the HUD. The local multiplayer is kinda neat, but I'd rather just play these games in their original forms with a buddy online through NSO.

I'm also pretty sure Ultimate NES Remix had more than 13 games. Granted, some of those--like Ice Climbers--don't exactly hold up well. So maybe they wanted to trim the fat for a more consistently enjoyable experience. But even so, I really feel like this should have been a free NSO title since we already have access to all these old games. I just don't know that the appeal is very strong here.

It's cool how they brought back previous NWC winners, though. That was really neat. I'd rather them just host an actual new event, though. The 2015 one was incredibly hype and I thoroughly enjoyed watching the stream. We got new announcements like the localization of Mother 1, Reggie went on stage to fight HungryBox in a Smash competition, Miyamoto presented the award to the champion at the end... it was awesome.

The 2017 one was underwhelming, though--it was clear they didn't have nearly as high of a budget for that one. The venue seemed much smaller, no announcements or special guest appearances as I recall, and the commentators had me cringing nonstop. Bring it back but don't make it a half-hearted effort this time, please. You have the money to spend. I'd love for NWC to become an annual event like Blizzcon or something.

Not fun enough for 60 and probably not for 30, though.

@Altaria_97 Me too, the extras while nice are not what I'm after. A simple physical mainline release is what I wanted. Instead its download only or an expensive limited edition... It's really not ideal.

All I really want is to be able to play the actual 1990 competition again:

Get 50 coins in Super Mario Bros
Complete track in Rad Racer
Get as many points in Tetris with the time remaining

Doesn't seem especially substantial, but I want to see more smaller games like this from Nintendo again. We really haven't had many ever since Good Job! - basically just HAL Laboratory games and 99 titles. I also dig the Deluxe Set's extra goodies, and really want to fill out my physical library before the Switch successor launches (I have space for 78 cartridges), so...I put in a preorder for that. Probably not my wisest financial decision, but whatever. Not like I've been picking up much of what's been releasing anyways, with more middling reviews for everything that's already out barring Mario vs. Donkey Kong, and I'm hesitant to pull the trigger on both TTYD (mostly due to my circumstances - I won't need to spend $100+ on a GameCube copy because I have family members with one even though they don't play games anymore, and I'm not fully onboard with the 30fps and unnecessary dialogue changes) and Luigi's Mansion (they haven't shown any substantial changes at all; all I want to know is if they've changed the control scheme to match the console controls of the other games and if they've added checkpoints or saving during missions). I can spare the money for this.

I know we have the Switch Online app....just you know, nice to have a physical collection for these games on Switch. I don't think its much to ask as opposed to asking £25/£50 just for challenges and a multiplayer mode.

I remember competing in this, back in 1990. Made it to the stage in Pittsburgh. Rad Racer was the bane of my existence.

But will there be a standard physical edition?

If I can get a standard, physical edition, I couldn't care less about the Deluxe edition. Of course I don't oppose the idea of getting one if I can.

The Japanese trailer and website does mention a standard physical version.

But seriously, as far as I can tell, this is not worth it in the slightest. If every challenge is like, six seconds, what's the point? There might be more to it than that, but still, I'd only get it for a steep discount. Also, the trailer is hilariously underwhelming. It hypes things up considerably, and then just kills it all in less than a second.

Speedrunning is definitely not my thing but I’ll happily revisit a bunch of NES faves! I’ll see if my local GameStop has the physical up for preorder.

This is a cool idea, but not interested at that price. If it had controllers like the Japanese release maybe, but a bunch of collectible junk does nothing for me.

Sounds like it could be of fun, but 30 bucks is a little steep. $15 seems more reasonable imo

Really nicely made trailer...just wish the effort would have went into the game. A port of the remix game would have been more interesting than this.

Ice Climbers is awful in a: "I never want to play this again" sort of way.

So, bite-sized speedrunner challenges for classic NES games. That's cool. But what I REALLY wanted to see were trophy accomplishments NSO-wide.

For example:
1.) Beat Super Mario Bros.
2.) Beat Super Mario Bros. without warping or using the infinite lives trick.

Stuff like that would be fun as hell!

I'm really conflicted on this game. It looks like a lot of fun, but I think it might just be a bit short for the price. I might pick it up at some point but I'm not going to pre-order it just yet.

No local wireless play. How do you have multiplayer but no local wireless play?

@LadyCharlie This upcoming game is going to have multiplayer and will also have more fully fleshed out online features compared to NES Remix. The missions seem much more fleshed out too.

Nintendo doesn't want to talk about the other Nintendo World Champion who went on to endorse games for unlicensed publisher Camerica.

(or am I thinking of the Guy Are Us (Gaiares) guy, a game on competing hardware. Was he a different guy? The man who did a reshoot of the same ad, 30 years later, for an aftermarket reprint.)

@maksw9172 The Remix games had levels like these, but they also had challenges that mixed some games together. Like playing as Link in a Donkey Kong level.

Don’t think of World Championship as Remix. Think of it as 9-Volts Retro Challenge (WarioWare).
