Welcome to our complete story walkthrough of Super Mario RPG on Nintendo Switch and SNES.

Mario has just made it through Belome Temple and arrived at Monstro Town, a village full of reformed monsters. There’s quite a bit to see here, including a whole bunch of shopkeepers, hidden bosses, and special challenges.

Here’s our guide on Monstro Town and how to get past the giant wall in Land’s End in Super Mario RPG. Let’s-a-go!

Monstro Town Walkthrough

Enter the first door here and speak to Monstermama. Apparently, there’s a star upstairs, so go check it out and then return to the first floor. Monstermama tells Mario that Monstro Town is the only remaining land, so the only other place a Star Piece could be is up. A bunch of Sky Troopas deploy themselves to Land’s End to help you scale the cliff, but there are actually a few more things to do here first.

In the second door is a canine character who gives you an Attack Scarf if you’ve jumped more than 30 times using the Super Jump move. You can get an even better accessory here if you’ve done 100 Super Jumps in a row, but that takes some serious skill.

Talk to the Thwomp several times in a row, and every time he smashes against the ground, the key outside will come closer to falling off the cliff. When it finally does, grab it and continue to the next door.

If you got the Shiny Stone a few sections ago, it will unlock the third door and reveal a secret boss. Unfortunately, there’s absolutely no way you’ll be able to defeat it right now, so ignore it for now and enter the shop.

The shopkeeper is a reformed Goomba (plus his triplets). Bowser pops out and surprisingly doesn’t chew him out! This shop has a new weapon and a new piece of armor for Bowser, so purchase them if you have extra cash. The triplets sell Mushrooms, but they have the nasty side effect of actually turning you into one too, so don’t buy those.

The next house contains a bed, and if you rest in it you’ll actually initiate one of the game’s few side quests — the Three Musty Fears. You'll get a Ghost Medal for completing this, which halves the damage you take when worn in battle, so it's definitely worth the trouble. Check out how to complete the Three Musty Fears and Where To Find The Three Flags to get this accessory.

The house up top contains a dojo, which sees you completing a series of increasingly difficult battles. The last one is probably a bit too much for you right now, so feel free to come back later when you’ve gained some levels. If you want to try, however, check out our guide on How To Defeat Jinx.

Hidden Treasure 30 - Town entrance

Head to the very last room in the row, stand directly west of the bush and jump. You’ll uncover the sole Hidden Treasure chest of this location which contains a Frog Coin. Nice!

With the temple key in hand that you got by talking to the Thwomp, hop on the trampoline at the northwest end of town and go all the way back through Belome Temple.

Return to Land's End

Take the elevator back up and then flip the switch. If the message says “Sorry, I’m not accepting visitors past my bedtime”, go back and use the elevator again. Otherwise, exit and re-enter the room until the letter has that message.

Give Belome the key to find a room full of treasure! Pick up all the goodies, which include Frog Coins and Flowers galore. With the treasure collected, head back up the elevator and continue backtracking through Belome Temple. When you see the hooded figure guarding the trampoline, pay 100 coins to unlock a shortcut and then use it to return to the desert area. From here, head out of the northeast exit and the Sky Troopas will deploy.

If you manage to climb up the Sky Troopas in less than 11 seconds (12 seconds on SNES), you’ll receive a Troopa Medal / Troopa Pin as a reward. This accessory increases the user’s damage output by 50% as well as giving them a speed boost, so it might be worth sticking around and trying it out.

When you’re all done with the challenge, head out the exit to return to the world map and make your way to Bean Valley.
