Atlus To Delist Shin Megami Tensei V & All DLC From Switch eShop

I guess this makes sense since the new game will override everything the original had to offer. I just always get anxious when I see "delisted". Everything is temporary now.

Gonna try to sell my Switch copy that hasn't been opened yet and been sitting in my backlog for two years. I'll purchase this on PS4 when it eventually goes on sale.

Kind of odd given vanilla Persona 5 is still up and on sale for dirt cheap all the time.

Makes sense, helps making people avoid buying the worse game for the same price.

Not happy with the re release myself though - there should be a way to upgrade for those who bought the original game

@maulinks I agree, this is weird for people who were there day 1 and are now getting shafted with this release. For people like me it's good to be a late adopter, as I'll be getting the new release. But it is definitely not nice towards fans of the series, to put it mildly.

@Pillowpants This. I love Atlus games but their approach to most releases these days essentially punishes early buyers who are probably their biggest fans and supporters

It's good that I had already downloaded the game a long time ago.

@Warioware The way I read their strategy is that they know that their most loyal fans will buy their products day 1 and wont be able to resist to buy them again when they release the next installment. Meanwhile as you said, this is aimed to pick up those late adopters that were not convinced at first, but now can get a lot for a cheap price.

It reads weird to not be able to upgrade if you had the base game but then.. if people keep buying new games on day 1, I see no way of them changing this business strategy.

I'm not sure why they released an inferior version of a millennia old game to begin with, since according to the article the game comes out in 1014.

Or do we have to wait for an event so impactful that they redo our dating system, and then have to wait until 1014 of then? If so, this action seems a bit premature! I mean, talk about development hell, but it seems like this game will not be released until we have an SMT level apocalypse!

As someone with a CE of SMTV, I am pretty miffed that an upgrade isn't even up for consideration.

Technically Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance was the game we're suppose to get from the very beginning. Atlus just use a very good tactic by giving Switch owners the first dipped on the game and then offers DLCs. When they finally made their money then they put all these contents into one final package and resell it as a definitive edition. It's the same deal they did with Persona 4 and Persona 5.

You won't be able to upgrade. It's Atlus. They're scum. They'll make you buy the whole thing again, and a fresh wave of day one DLC. They did the same thing with Persona 5 Royal, and with the PS5 version (no upgrade for PS4 players). Don't support their games. Don't support this wretched company.

@Wisps Persona is one of my faviurite franchises but it is unlikely that I will buy the next one when it launches because 3 years later there will be the emerald version or something. I agree that this should be DLC (I think there are no changes to the original content anyway).

With SMTV specifically I thought that Nintendo publishing it might have made a difference or that they would do what they did with SMTIV with a second linked stsndalone game. Guess not.

Very annoyed now that I do not know if I should buy all dlc now or if it will be included or accessible in Vengeance.

I think my physical copy just went up in value!

@maulinks @Wisps Yeah…it sucks but if fans are buying the launch version and then presumably go on to double dip with the upgraded version later then Atlus aren’t going to stop. If this is expected from them at this point with their mainline games then fans need to make themselves heard that they want a discounted upgrade path for those who bought the original and the only way to do it really is through boycotts…money talks louder than anything else. Otherwise nothing will change

@abbyhitter I'm going to have to do the same, but since Atlas wants to screw us over, I'll give it the middle finger right back and get a used copy of Vengeance a few years down the line.

I could (almost) excuse Capcom for this garbage practice in the days before DLC and the ability to bolt on expansions, but there is no excuse for it in 2024.

@Friendly The DLC from the original SMT V will be bundled in with Vengeance. They did this with P5 Royal as well.

@JohnnyMind I think it's do with the voucher program. SMTV (the 2021 release) is published by Nintendo so you can get it via vouchers.

Octopath Traveler got delisted earlier this year and when it got relisted it was Square Enix as publisher with no voucher eligibility. What we're seeing here is similar except instead of relisting the exact same game, SEGA are releasing an expanded version.

@Arcane-Fer Vengeance is basically the same game with the added bonuses. Why keep the older version? It will be redundant.

I will probably finish getting the DLC but that means I won’t get vengeance until it is about 20 bucks on xbox.

I hope the DLC will still be accessible for purchase from within the game itself for those who own it physically.
I remember Nintendo did the same thing for Pikmin 3 on Wii U a while back, they delisted the game and all the DLC from the Wii U eShop but if you own or buy the physical copy of the game you could still access the eShop page through the game itself and still purchase the delisted DLC. I hope ATLUS does that too with this game.

@abbyhitter lol I was the same but sold mine as soon as this version was announced. Hadn't touched it and there was a few times I was going to buy the dlc when it was on sale.

Now I am going to get the PC version since I have the Steam Deck it fixes that portability side of things.

Overall I do understand them delisting the game but you would think they would atleast keep the dlc for people who don't want to get the new version but still want to get the dlc.

I know Koei did this with the Atelier series on steam when the DX versions of some of there games got released. They removed the ability to buy the older version but kept the dlc for those games on those store pages. I think that is the best way to handle it.

Feels weird they're doing this. I don't get annoyed much when a better version of a game I bought comes out some time after, but the delisting just doesn't sit right and definitely doesn't make me want to buy the new one or upgrade if that's an option.

@Lizuka Vanilla P5 is a different experience from Royal. Vengeance has the original SMTV in it.

@Warioware I'm getting the impression that we won't be seeing the re-releases going forward. Look at P3 Reload, they're doing an expansion pass when people were expecting them to have a re-release for the Answer. Yes, Vengeance is coming after that game, but it's a multiplatform release of an exclusive game, so I think it works as an exception. Tying up a loose end.

So if you have the original base game, you're locked out of all the DLCs that were available? They should still keep the DLCs up for those still with the original game.

Then let me buy only the Vengeance part, please.

I do not want to buy the same game again only to access the new scenario.

This one has been sitting incomplete in my backlog for quite a while. Just a long game I don’t have time for so I can’t imagine how long it would be with all that extra content. Thats JRPGs for you.

I have this unplayed, and think they should give everyone the DLC content free if they don't have it.

Also, won't it put people off buying any of their games in case another version comes out that replaces the original

Honestly this is a good move. Prevents anyone from grabbing the blatantly inferior version.

Obviously they could have offered an upgrade path, but this is Atlus. They repackage their upgrade versions all the time lol.

And Atlus just reminded me again to never buy a game on release and always wait a year a two.

I realize Deluxe or Ultimate Editions is not a new concept. I’m just saying you won’t catch me buying P6 on release that’s for sure.

@CutchuSlow delisting means you can't buy them. If you already got them, you can still redownload them (same with the game, if you got it digitally).

So it would only lock out people that had tge game sitting in their backlogs all this time and people they would resell the physical copies to

@Orpheus79V I hope you are right! Still going to be cautious for now. The only thing with P3R is that the story elements were largely done, unlike previous games. But I hope this is a new approach!

@Noelemahc I was talking about the DLCs, like if they only bought the base game but no dlc, And want to get the dlc later or something. So they're kinda left out for not letting the owners of the game buy the DLCs.

Warioware, from my understanding, the vanilla SMTV doesn’t have any story changes. The only added content will be the updated mechanics included with the Canon of Vengeance route.

@BlueMage Hey no problems at all dude. Enjoy what you love and tbh if there is anything to support despite some dirty strats is SMT. The franchise better live until forever!

@BlueMage yeah me too, I bought the DLC but struggled to get into the game (preferred SMTIV actually). Atlus' games are some of my favourites but their strategies... well, no. Also, the standalone nature of the new content just reinfirces that this should gave been DLC. The new stuff in the Persona games and Catherine would probably gave required too much reworking to just patch it in.

I love me some Atlus, but they do have a history of gouging early adopters on some things. I've always happily paid full price to play Etrian Odyssey titles on release, but even back in the 3DS days I knew that my $40, 100+ hour experience would eventually be on sale for $15.
