Video: Nintendo World Championships Japanese Gameplay Officially Revealed

It seems pretty bare-bones, which is hardly surprising. Feels like a junior staff project that turned into a release just to pad out the Switch's end-of-life.

That video came out three days ago, could've reported on this earlier, but for it not being newsworthy.

I'm well up for this tbh! I love the nes classics remix, although that did look better than this.

@Jack_Goetz 100%. I like the concept but limiting it to just NES games kills any enthusiasm I’d have had for it otherwise. If it had a range of challenges based on games from NES through to at least N64/GBA (ideally a couple of games per console up to Switch if that’s technically feasible) I’d be more interested.

I get that they’re going for pure old school nostalgia but there are several generations now who weren’t around for NES. Then again this was clearly not a high priority project so being stripped back to NES makes sense, I just think it could be a lot more than it is

I still have hope they will make a SNES Edition. Not sure if I'll get this for launch, it depends if there will be content updates or not.

Dunno about N64/GBA, but SNES should definitely have been included, as later Nintendo World Championships included this, such as '93 with F-Zero, Super Mario World, and Pilotwings.

The weird thing is, I was able to pre order Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door a few weeks ago.

Every Wario Ware minigame looks more fun than any of this...

its cool if you are happy with this, in the absence of full releases or retail compilations of these classic games. ultimately i am speaking for myself and people that I know, who all go back to childhood in the 80s/90s with Nintendo, and other people I've seen saying similar things on the internet. obviously, i can't speak for everyone. ✌️

@-wc- that's cool, sir. I grew up during the NES and SNES era as well, and this is right up my alley. It may not be 100% what we all want, but I'm happy with what's on offer.

This looks like NES Remix 1 and 2 from Wii U just reheated. That's not really a bad thing, but it doesn't seem quite like a "full" game to me. As Jack_Goetz said, this looks like something to pad out the end of Switch's lifespan a little more comfortably. If I hadn't played NES remix and had fun with it, it might be worth the trouble, but there are too many good games out there I've yet to play the first time.

@daveMcFlave Remix was fun, but some of my favorite WarioWare levels are the retro levels from 9-Volt. So I am looking forward to this. That said, I hope that there are more challenging objectives.

If this is Switch's twilight year, I'll take it. TTYD, Mario RPG, Nintendo World Championships ....... Keep em coming Nintendo.

If it had been free for NSO Expansion Pack owners, with a physical version including ROM's of the full games, would it be any less succesful than it likely will be? Doubtful. And you could argue that it may have done even better. It would encourage more to upgrade their basic subscription and the included ROM's would ensure sales from folk who otherwise weren't interested in buying it. Also the collectors would buy it regardless if they're already an Expansion Pack member.

Well, it looks more fun than Big Brain Academy.

Though yes, it does seem pricey.
And of course, NSO-wide trophies and achievements would be SO much better.

But the party mode is the only way I'll ever see my mom enjoy SMB1, 2, Metroid and Zelda. And all in just a few minutes.

This is just a means to sell the NES NSO controllers

Leave it to Nintendo to keep finding ways to sell us the same games over and over again…

I remember when I was a kid, we used to think the average Japanese person was godly at video games. Magazines at the time backed this up, and even publishers here in the west, by saying the Japanese versions were too hard so they need to be toned down for the western release. But now that I am older I see all these Japanese folks my age that suck at video games just as much as we did lol.

It would be cool for an anniversary event if they made some kind of collection of the best NES games and they came with the Switch carts inside of full size NES steel book cartridges and those were packaged inside of cardboard boxes with manuals and maps or hint books. Then like a replica NES that the Switch docks into. I would pay a pretty penny for all that.

Ultimately I'm good with this, too. it took me a couple days to come around. TBF I'm usually grumpy about whatever Nintendo does or doesn't do at all times.
