So much complaining, for something with a clear purpose. It's currently the only option for an actual d-pad in handheld mode.
"I'll just use a proper controller" - Good for you, that's not a solution for handheld mode though is it.
"The buttons are fine, I don't need a d-pad" - That's great for you too! You don't need to buy one, or tell everyone they're crap because you don't need the one thing they're designed for. You can go about your day.
The use case is for those of us who are playing 2D games in handheld mode and finding the buttons on the standard joy-con unsuitable.

An essential purchase for me, as this is the only shoot-em-up I ever managed to get the wife to play. Only trouble is I only had 2000 wii points, and I already bought r-type, gotta wait now to top up, 400 points is useless
