FuRyu's action RPG Trinity Trigger is coming out in Japan in just a few weeks, but today, XSEED Games has announced that it will be bringing the game over to western shores "early" next year!
With staff including worldbuilding artist Yuki Nobuteru (Secret of Mana), character designs by Raita Kazama (Xenoblade Chronicles), a story written by writer Yura Kubota (Octopath Traveler), and music from renowned RPG composer Hiroki Kikuta (Secret of Mana), Trinity Trigger aims to capture the feel of '90s action RPG nostalgia. You'll be able to play local co-op with two other friends as you "hack and slash your way to the Gods".
XSEED shared some features for the game, which releases on Switch in "Early 2023":
KEY FEATURES
Master the Weapons of the Gods — Solve puzzles and defeat enemies alone or with friends in local co-op as players traverse the dungeons of each Arma, towers made from the fallen weapons of the gods.
Seek Out Trinitia’s Mysteries — Reveal hidden passages by exploring every last bit of Trinitia’s diverse biomes and chat with townsfolk for clues to uncover the heavily guarded secrets held in these forests, deserts, snowfields, and more.
Change the Tide of Battle — Make expert use of the Weapon Wheel in battle to change between eight weapon types on the fly– every enemy has a weakness and finding and exploiting it is the key to victory.
A Generational Role-Playing Epic — Trinity Trigger was inspired by the iconic RPGs of yesteryear, but its accessible and rewarding gameplay incorporates modern flourishes to make it an exciting new adventure.
We've had our eyes on this ever since the game's key art dropped, and it indeed looks like a lovely throwback to sitting in front of our Super Nintendos while playing Secret of Mana. There's a plethora of big names working on the title with pretty respectable resumes, and you can find out more about them in our previous story:
When we get a proper release date nailed down for Trinity Trigger, we'll let you know!
Are you interested in Trinity Trigger? Have you tried out the Japanese demo? Let us know!

another rpg to look forward to..
I remember not being 100% sold on the graphics when I watched the demo, but I'm choosing to stay cautiously optimistic. At least we don't have to wait too long to see what reviewers make of it when it's released in Japan in a couple of weeks.
You know all you need to do to get me to click on an article is put the word Xenoblade somewhere. Also, does this specific RPG subgenre already have a name, or can I just start calling them Dragalia-likes?
I'm at the point considering quitting my job with all the RPG"s that are being released currently left and right.
That 3 player coop sold me the game!
@Anachronism What is Dragalia? This is just a classic action RPG, in the SNES era there were hundred of games like this. Just look at the Mana series.
love the idea of coop action rpg, don't like the janky 3d animations. Still hope it turns out well.
@the_beaver The mobile RPG Nintendo published a few year ago that's unfortunately shutting down in a couple months. And you're gonna have to cut me some slack on anything before the GameCube. I haven't seen anything from the last 20 years that looks quite like this besides Dragalia Lost, which looks...a lot like this.
@Anachronism Ah I see, never played that one, I don't like mobile games.
No need to go that far back in time to see many games like this, just look for the Secret of Mana remake in Google, for example, or Oninaki. Even the Zelda-like games could be included here, like Tunic or Baldo, as they're very similar to those games in most aspects. favor
They're not as popular as they used to be in the 90s, though, mainly because they're becoming 3D games in this new century, such as the Trials of Mana remake, the Kingdom Hearts series, Ys VIII and IX, the Tales of series and so many others. They're still action RPGs, but with another camera perspective.
PS: You would do yourself a favor playing Terranigma (SNES). It's one of the best action RPGs ever made.
not really feeling this one... even from the graphics, while they look ok/good, you can see that many environments have even less attention to detail than even 27 year old chrono trigger
those dungeons areas look very bland
The magician of the Xeno-series is Tetsuya Takahashi. He (and his wife) are the ones who bring the meaning and gravitas to those games.
Definitely some “magic mushrooms” when they were younger (would have been legal and prevalent at that time in Japan too. Largely unspoken but a lot of anime, games, and manga were inspired by psilocybin from the 70’s to 90’s — until the Nagano Olympics when they were outlawed.)
This is definitely a true Secret of Mana spiritual successor way better than that garbage that was on PS2 at the time.
Local co-op? Sign me up!
@the_beaver Nah, I know what a top-down action rpg is. I'm talking about this specific type. The super boxy, linear map design, enemy AOE warnings, and a lot of other small details match closely enough that they're both more or less guaranteed to be taking inspiration from something specific if one's not copying the other. I probably should do some more catchup on the SNES library, though. Would be nice if we got more games like those with Nintendo Online.
@Friendly Haha! I have actually done this and here is the list that I need to play:

Trinity Trigger looks like Secret of Mana for the 21st century. I am really interested.
@Anachronism You're clearly talking about the Mana series. This game is clearly inspired by them. It's just a way to do it, but the Ys series is very similar, check them out.
Wish it had modern graphics, I'd be interested. Like I'm just mostly into 3rd person camera games.
Well obviously I'm interested in this. ^_^
@the_beaver I'm clearly not. The only one I could even find with AOE warnings was the Trials remake which came out a good while after Dragalia, and even the SNES games tried to have more fleshed out map designs rather than the almost arcadey look this is going for.
@Anachronism Then I have no idea what you're talking about, but this game, Trinity Trigger, is basically a modern Secret of Mana. You just have to see that the creators are the same.
As I said, I have never played Dragalia Lost, so I can't say what makes that game unique, but I would NEVER say that this game is not just another action RPG. It doesn't look particularly original, to be honest, I have played tons of games like this in my life. I like that it has coop, though! That's not so common.
This and Harvestella interest me from the character illustrations alone.
That one Lord of the Rings top-down action RPG on Game Boy Advance was so nostalgic for me. Played through that whole game with my brother! Also, Crystal Chronicles was another fond time of coop RPG action with friends back in the day. So this specific niche is a weakness of mine.
Not only top-down action RPG's, but also third-person action coop RPG's like Phantasy Star Online on the Gamecube with split screen coop, as well as local multiplayer with Monster Hunter on PSP. PvE coop action RPG's are my jam.
That's why every great RPG or even action adventure game is just better with a coop option, regardless of game balance.
Hiroki Kikuta is my favorite VG composer, so I’m intrigued.
Trailer didn't really show off anything especially impressive or distinctive about the game. But I'll have to look out for the reviews.
@CutchuSlow Then the local coop would be pretty hard to implement. I guess they decided to go this way because of that, and I respect it.
@Li_Bae They didn't do much in music besides Secret and Trials of Mana, I don't think.
But wow is that a contribution!
I'm pretty much liking all I'm seeing... But that chibi character style. I wish the characters looked proportionate to their animated cutscene counterparts. This was a personal prob I had with Bravely Default. Still, I can't deny the dream team working on this, so I eagerly await a review once available.
That is one confusing header NLife.
Sounds, looks and plays like Secret of Mana. Sold!
So does the JPN version have english option??? I already PreOrdered this version so now I am checking.
While it's a secondary concern to the gameplay, this game really needs a graphics upgrade. Aside from the cutscenes, these graphics look like they're straight from a (2/3)DS game! Even retro-style remasters like "Pokémon BD/SP" and the Switch remaster of "Link's Awakening" look much better than this!
