Update [Mon 23rd May, 2022 15:30] Oopsie! Biccamera, an electronics retailer in Japan, has accidentally revealed PROJECT-TRITRI ahead of schedule. The game was originally going to be unveiled by FuRyu on 26th May, but in a slip-up, the Japanese retailer published the name, the release date, and a bunch of screenshots earlier today.
'Project' has been dropped from the name, and we now know the game is going to be called Trinity Trigger. The game will launch on PS5, PS4, and (most importantly) Switch on 15th September in Japan. When we'll get it in the West, we have no clue yet, but hopefully it won't be much longer after!
Gematsu has gathered together a full summary of the game from the store pages, right before the listings were taken down (thanks, Gematsu!). Here's everything we know about Trinity Trigger so far:
About
A 90s era traditional RPG experience for the modern age.
A completely new title from developers who have previously worked on traditional fantasy RPGs.
A story about a young man caught up in fate who will save the world. The excitement of exploring fields and discovering treasure. And action-based gameplay in which you pave your own path to victory.
This is a straightforward fantasy RPG like never before—for those who were once children and have now grown up, and for the children of today—playable alone or with others.
Story
The legend goes…
Long ago, the “Gods of Order” and the “Gods of Chaos” fought for control of the world.
Great weapons fell to the land, and the world began to collapse.
Each God chose a proxy—a “Warrior of the Gods”—and it was decided that a winner would be determined by the battles between warriors.
And so time passed…
Cyan, a young man living a quiet life in a small village, one day learns that he is a “Warrior of Chaos” chosen by the Gods. Burdened with a cruel fate, he sets out on a journey to fight against destiny with Eris and Xanthys, who joined him as if guided to him.
Together the three can change their fate… So it is believed…
Key Features
- Classic Isometric Action for the Modern Age – Classic isometric action with a 90s era feel, polished for the modern age.
Feel Excitement, Elevation, and Tension through Three Concepts of Discovery
- Discovery in Battle – Fight in action-based battles by switching between a total of eight weapon types using the “Ring Change” system. Victory is determined not only by finding the enemy’s opening and circumstance, but also by using the weapons they are weakest against. Enjoy a battle style all your own by putting together your own combos, weapon upgrades, and effects.
- Discovery on the Field – With more than 60 area maps—including lush forests, forests with glowing mushrooms, snowy mountains, deserts, ice, and fire—with numerous treasure chests, cuttable weeds, breakable rocks, and paths not obvious at first sight, dungeon exploration offers an endless sense of discovery. Tons of diverse mechanics will ensure you not travel each map on a linear path.
- Discovery in Towns – There are plenty of discoveries to be made via the people you meet in towns. You may even uncover treasures by talking to them. To discover the truth of this world, it is essential to hear out the stories of its oppressed people.
With some beautiful-looking art, which we've already seen down below, we've also got a really good look at the game down below. It looks and sounds like it'll be an adventure-focused top-down action RPG. There's even something that looks like the item wheel from Secret of Mana!
We'll see if FuRyu gives us any more juicy details prior to, or on, the game's official reveal on 26th May.
Original article [Fri 20th May, 2022 11:15 BST] Japanese publisher FuRyu — known for bringing us RPGs The Alliance Alive, The Caligula Effect, and Monark — has launched a countdown for a brand new action RPG, PROJECT-TRITRI. Obviously that's not going to be the final title... unless FuRyu is going for Project Octopath Traveler and Project Triangle Strategy vibes.
The game is currently in development by Three Rings, who has worked on the wholesome Story of Seasons: Pioneers of Olive Town. We won't find out much more about the game until 26th May, but we know it's coming to Switch (and PlayStation 4 and 5) and is aiming for a Q2 2022 release date, which is *checks calendar* pretty soon! The week wait might be a bit agonising for JRPG fans, but we have a few teasers to get us even more excited. All of the information we've included below has been translated by Gematsu — so thanks, Gematsu!
So, let's start with the first bit of info, which is pretty darn tantalising in and of itself. There's a bumper list of RPG veterans working on this upcoming project, with names from the Mana series, Pokémon, and Xenoblade!
- Nobuteru Yuuki (character designer on Seiken Densetsu 3, Chrono Cross) - World Design
- Raita Kazama (character designer on Xenoblade Chronicles X, art design on Xenoblade Chronicles) - Character Design
- Yuura Kubota (writer on Octopath Traveler, Bravely Default II) - Scenario
- Hiroki Kikuta (composer of Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 3) - Music
Atsuko Nishida, Tomohiro Kitakaze, and Megumi Mizutani — all artists on the Pokemon series — are also confirmed to be working on some kind of creature designs for the game, ones that transform into weapons to help out the person who has summoned them.
The other nugget (though calling it a nugget doesn't do it justice) is a confidential game proposal document. You can read the whole thing right here if you understand Japanese, but we've grabbed a few of the most important details we think you'd like to know about!
Starting with the concept, the developers wanted players to capture the feeling of "excitement, elevation, and tension" and revive "90s era of RPG classics for the modern age" that you can play "by yourself or with everyone". You'll be able to play the game with up to three people (there's your tri reference for you), so perhaps there are three party members? We're just excited about getting another multiplayer RPG.
The story is next on the docket, which sounds like an RPG story, for sure! But look at the art — these early glimpses at the game look absolutely lovely.
Cyan, a young man living a quiet life in a small village, learns that he is a “Warrior of Chaos” chosen by the Gods, and sets out on a journey to fight against his cruel fate.
For our money, RPGs called Cyan often have a pretty rough time — looking at your Final Fantasy VI — so we'd like to caution the warrior. But we'll take any change to punch God in the face.
Now let's have a look at some concept art of the characters, which are absolutely in Raita Kazama's style. A little bit of Xenoblade with some more Octopath-style armour? We're in.
Some lovely concept art, a great cast list, and an intriguing premise? We're looking forward to finding out more about PROJECT-TRITRI next week. Don't forget, the countdown ends on 26th May at 3am PDT / 6am EDT / 11am BST / 12pm CET. You can go and have a look at it here or follow the game's official Twitter account for updates.
Are you excited by this upcoming RPG? Let us know in the comments.

PROJECT-TRITRI, that’s so dumb that I’d almost wanna see it. Let’s go full on baby language.
"Here's our CONFIDENTIAL design notes, you should read them" — not sure they know what the word means.
"Xenoblade Artist, Secret Of Mana Composer", disappointing "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" sequel.
Project TriTri not to laugh.
Ooh! Sounds promising, curious to see what they're planning! Love the design sketches they have.
Hmm. 26th may.... Nintendo direct confirmed.
An RPG? Out of Japan?! What are the chances… Oh..super insanely high? Okay
Just wait til the name of the game is Tri Tri.
It looks awesome with a great team but that scenario writer worries me because those games were not great stories. I love the old school and I love that companies are making throwback games but they usually do not deliver on the story.
Yeah I'm gonna buy it you knew that already.
Highly doubtful they keep the project name, they are not as lazy as square.
Ehh a party RPG? Didn't Crystal Chronicles try that and fail miserably?
Hopefully they just mean 3 characters battling at once and not co op crap.
Is the designer from XC1 and XCX different from the others? I liked those game designs but I'm not a big fan of the rest of the series (even the Xeno that came before) robots in bikinis, tights and high heels
Chrono 3 confirmed!
Sounds a bit TRI-TRI-hard, if I'm honest.
Only joking — this has me very intrigued - looking forward to seeing a proper announcement/trailer
Consider me intrigued! Though I assure everyone I'm not waking up at 5 AM for the reveal. I can live with learning about it a couple of hours after the fact.
I'm really interested in seeing what this is about. It is sounding really promising so far, and that is an impressive list of talent working on it.
This is gonna be good I can't wait.
Guess I'll keep an eye out.
@Bobb Yeah, mostly different designers. XC2 had a bunch of different character designers involved (including Tetsuya Nomura, randomly), though it doesn't look like Kazama did any work on XC2.
@SteamEngenius As someone who sorely misses the old Crystal Chronicles multiplayer RPG niche, I am very excited to see what this game will look like! I used to love playing multiplayer RPG's with my friends and family growing up on GBA/DS. Even trading and battling makes Pokemon feel like a multiplayer RPG, so I really love that genre.
Sounds interesting, curious to see what they are bringing this time.
I'd like to see modern jrpg that try to carry the flow of the 90s games expand to a 5-6 party size in battle. 3 or 4 is fine but more fighters adds diversity to who you bring into a fight. You still don't need to have more then 7-8 main characters.
It won't retain that stupid name because it's not developed by Team Asano, who only seem to come up with "project names" that end up being final. Nevertheless this sounds like a bit of me already. I'll be keeping an eye out for the announcement.
Don't know what this is but I'm feeling the hype...
@kupocake i liked that movie...
@Bobb it’s ironic you mention those specific things you’re not a fan of when both games have it as much, X arguably having the most across the entire franchise.
@DJDM nothing random about it, Takahashi has known him for awhile and he was supposed to work on character designs for gears. Never happened because he was working on a final fantasy game at the time
Nice concept, they got some solid talent behind it thus far. Honestly, I couldn't care less what the name is.
Kikuta is a genius.
The work Kikuta did in Seiken Densetsu 2 was impressive.
Is it just me or is anybody getting Shulk, Fiora, and Reyn/Dunban vibes from the characters in this game?
I thought this was gonna be the next Tokyo RPG Factory game. I feel like they were on the right path with their last game and if they get a chance to make another one I am confident it will come together
Trinity Trigger. I like the name. This game has some pedigree working on it. The screenies look exactly like where they have come from. Let's hope the music does too
An Octopath-esque style AND Atsuko Nishida and Megumi Mizutani are involved? You have my attention.
Looks good so far. Let's hope the trailer makes it even more appealing.
I hope this game gets a sequel even if it doesn't perform well.
You know what they say - If at first you don't succeed, TriTri again.
So basically expect a delay announcement for switch before September is what I'm hearing.
Hopefully they put the work in and make it not a blurry mess on the Switch version.
Trinity Trigger is a good name, and I'm actually liking the screenshots so far! This is looking like what Square Enix should be doing with the Crystal Chronicles IP, but no matter. And I'm loving the character art, wow! It's a pleasing blend of Granblue/Bravely/old-school artwork that's comforting and nostalgic. I'm going to have to get my friends on this to play with them!
Does this have anything to do with the guys who made Crystar? Because that had a fantastic story and writing (in my opinion).
The article's headline is confusing.
By now Play-Asia should just make me a board member after all these games I get from them.
I like the rune factory style art, but tri as i might, i can't get into the in-game graphics from what I've seen. I'm all for a cooperative RPG though, so hopefully it's systems are fun and the controls are responsive
Looks like my kind of game! Hope it comes west so I can tri-tri it out!
Why is there such a strong focus on the "90s era feel" in the marketing. It feels like they already know the game is gonna be mediocre and try to twist the mediocrity into nostalgia "the game is supposed to be bland and boring because so were the games in the 90s".
Doesn't help that the screenshots look like bad mobile games.
I hope I'm wrong and that the game turns out to be fantastic, but I highly doubt it.
I’m actually very disappointed seeing this. I was hoping on an rpg on a much larger scale. Tales of Arise - style, but maybe even more mature / darker or grander tone. Third person or maybe even first person. A Japanese competitor to Oblivion, Skyrim or Avowed. This looks a bit too much generic in my opinion.
I probably had my hopes up too much.
Edit: oh wait, this is NOT the new rpg that Monolith Soft is working on? I should learn to read… but that means my hope is still alive! Yaj!
(And I’ll probably buy both rpg’s anyway since I’m a sucker for the genre)
Was the information correct in the original article that they were aiming for Q2 2022, then? I was very sceptical about the game because of that. These images and a September release date have me much more optimistic. Perhaps they have been aiming for a Q3 release all along, not Q2.
@FreasurePlanten They could also be referring to the fiscal year, starting in April.
@dBackLash Most of the best JRPGs ever are from the 90s, what are you talking about...?
And I think they compare it to those times because it's not a full 3D game, which is the XXI century's tendency.
I got real excited to see the word "trigger" in the title and thought it was Chrono related... Looks fun though and I might pick it up depending on what else comes out around then.
Looks kind of generic to me personally. Also wish they went with a job/class system over a weapon based system but oh well
sounds and looks a lot like the tokyo rpg factory games... they also always tell everyone they want to make golden age like rpgs but their graphics look always super low budget and their games were generic and forgetable... i think saying that this is "polished for modern era" is just a pure lie...
@Bobb but you know that on games like xenoblade work dozens of game designers right?
"A 90s era traditional RPG experience for the modern age" none of the screenshots give me that feel at all. Full character model art during dialog? High Polygons?
Only thing that reminds me of the 90s rpg is secret of mana, beyond oasis, and secret of evermore and the only thing it makes me to remind me of it is the health bar.
Umm...aren't those characters basically straight design ripoffs of Final Fantasy Tactics?
Screens look bare minimum as far as graphics go. nothing really pops..
Lol I'm blown away they didn't keep the name Project TriTri after games like octopath traveller and project triangle strategy released with their "name not final" names
Good name. Looks like old school Mana somewhat upscaled. Probably perfect for the Switch.
My most anticipated throwback RPG is still Sea of Stars though. Sacrifire looks tight also.
Wait, is it not even turn-based? How can they call their game a 90's traditional RPG then?
All interest is lost. Plus the game is graphically pretty ugly. It looks like the Diamond and Pearl remakes. Gross.
I'm wondering if they mean SNES or PS1 by "90s era," since RPGs on those two platforms were very different, especially by the time FF7 came out.
EDIT (10:45): Changed PS2 to PS1.
Yikes, the character design is ultra lame. Did a human being have any involvement in it?
@the_beaver they might have been really good JRPGs back in the day, but with a few exceptions most of those games would be considered mediocre by todays standard.
Darn, i hate when games force multiplayer & include party members I can't control. That's why i prefer turn based games, so i get to control everyone... Probably won't be for me.
@TheAbsol ps1 u mean? Not sure i had a ps2 yet, when ffvii was released.
@Dinglehopper exactly. I was hoping i wasn't alone.
@twztid13 Ah, whoops. Yeah. Typing on mobile can be a little finicky.
@SteamEngenius No no, Crystal Chronicles succeeded in that tremendously... on the GameCube.
Now, the Remaster on the other hand...
Yes, that one failed miserably.
@twztid13 Too many JRPGS have steered away from turn-based for some unfortunate reason. There aren't enough being made nowadays.
Not even Final Fantasy is turn-based anymore. It makes me sad ☹️
@Dinglehopper 💯. Agreed on the look of the game, too. I thought those pokemon remakes looked bad, too, but assumed i was alone, because of all the praise i read.
I was interested until I read it was a co-op thing. No thank you. I only play single-player JRPGs. I know it says you can play it "alone" but these types of games that are geared for co-op play always end up being tedious to play in solo mode.
