Splatoon 3's Splatfest World Premiere is home to Splatoon 3's first Splatfest, and the event kicks off today in all regions! Aptly taking place on World Rock Paper Scissors Day, you'll be able to try out the new Splatfests, including the brand new Tri-Color Turf War, in online matches throughout the day.
The Splatfest is split into two halves - the first six hours will be dedicated to the Splatfest Battles, where it's 1-v-1 paint-splattering battles all the way. Then, for the second six hours, you'll be getting into some 4-v-2-v-2 battles with a messy triple-team battle. To join in the Splatfest, you'll need to download the Splatfest World Premiere demo and swear allegiance to one of the three teams (let us know what you're going for in our poll!).
Once you boot up the demo, you might notice that you're given a code on the screen (or are emailed one). This code gives you a seven-day free Nintendo Switch Online trial (if you're not already subscribed to the service), so make sure if you redeem it so you can get in on the mess!
As a reminder, here are the times when the Splatfest starts in your region:
- Europe: August 27th (9am BST / 10am CEST to 9pm BST / 10pm CEST) - first half starts at 9am/10am, the second half starts at 3pm/4pm
- North America: August 27th (9am PDT / 12pm EDT to 9pm PDT) August 28th (12am EDT) - first half starts at 9am/12pm, the second half starts at 3pm/6pm
- Japan: August 28th (9am to 9pm JST) - first half starts at 9am, and the second half starts at 3pm
Good luck! And maybe we'll see you out there.

Woop! Go team Rock! 😃
Changed my sleep schedule specifically for this, I'm so excited. TEAM SCISSORS FTW!
Tried it and deleted it. I can’t fathom why they still insist on not allowing players to use the right stick to look up and down when gyro is enabled. It seems like deliberate obstinance now that so many shooters on Switch allow both.
How do you join friends?
I'm unable to. We are on the same team
@BulkSlash If you ever decide to give it another go, trust me it’s just getting used to it, I had the same reaction and after playing for a bit, I don’t even think about it.
I’m so hyped! Been waiting all weekend for this!
Looking forward to this.
Anyone else experiencing lots of disconnects? I am hoping it is not my internet connection!
@presenttense I've played some matches that disconnected because one or more players quit. Kinda annoying.
Tried to enter 3 times at midday today here I’m NZ and it wouldn’t let me in - then found out it’s not until tomorrow here 😢
I'm pumped to play Splatoon 3's first Splatfest on my new Splatoon 3 OLED Switch! I play Splatoon best in handheld mode, so this will just make it that much more special.
@BulkSlash Uhh WTF? Why don't you just turn off the motion controls then?
@presenttense I can't comment since it hasn't gone live here in the states yet, but remember this is essentially the Test Fire demo they had for 1 and 2, just with a different name. It's primary purpose is to test out the servers, so disconnects are probably to be expected. Also, I still don't know why, but in the first 2 games disconnects were always much more common during Splatfests..
after playing it for a bit I still prefer 2 over 3 movement and weapons just feel way better in 2 then they do in 3
@Redax Yeah, I get that, but trust me, you can hold your own with just sticks. I've been exclusively sticks since the beginning with Splatoon 1(i cant stand the motion control..ive tried.. shrug) and I've made it to X rank in Splatoon 2 and tear it up in Salmon Run. Just get that stick sensitivity where you like it and play yo butt off!
@CodyMKW Interesting because Thatsrb2Dude says everything feels better in 3.
@presenttense Yep same here in Europe.
Not been able to join a single match so far. Just keeps throwing communication error after 30 to 60 seconds.
So far its more like a Splat fail. Lol!
@vio speaking only from playing the jr in tutorial, I thjnk the motion controls and the movements feel vastly superior to S2 already
I don’t care what anyone says; I’m buying it.
@CodyMKW yea only thing that seemed off to me was while running it felt like I was going slower in 2 it was faster or felt that way at least
@EmoGamer It starts a 9am PACIFIC Standard Time. So that's 11am in Texas. About 20 minutes to go!
I've played some but I have no clue what is going on. 😆 I think this demo was designed for people who already know how the battles work.
Also, I love the style and basic moves so much — spinoff games when?
I've had no problem with disconnects so far and OMG this game is lit! Better than 2 in every way!
I just deleted the Splatoon 3 demo.
I really didn't like the game. I found it very simplistic.
And the worst, when a person left in the middle of the match, the match was ended for all people!!
HORRIBLE!! The person who left needed (and all the team LOST because it) to be replaced by a bot, like in Rocket League.
I know I hit this key in other comments here, but now, playing, I need to repeat....a match to be ended because only one person left is complete nonsense.
One thing I didn't like, or at least didn't see how, is being able to switch weapons in the middle of the match. Are you required to have a single weapon for the entire match? Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare 2 has much more mechanic to play during the match. I prefer much more Plants vs Zombies online than Splatoon.
Other: this movement controller is horrible. Where is the option to aim using the analogic? Plants vs Zombies you can choose....analogic or movement aim. Splatoon not? Very amateur.
I found the gameplay to be super limited.
Did not like. In this case, even if this game had the bots I asked for, I wouldn't buy the game, as I really didn't like the game.
These new maps are bland as hell and totally not geared for my play style. I’m sure i’m in the minority because they seem to be working well for all my opponents who splat me constantly.
I’m glad Nintendo did a demo before my preorder got dispatched.
@Rykdrew I agree with you about the bots - I hope they change it to include those - the whole match forfeit because of one player disconnecting is very silly.
By the way you can change the controls to the right stick in the options
I really want to like Splatoon. But i just can't. The gameplay does nothing for me, I don't like any of the weapons and while i really like the world and designs as a whole, I never liked the Inklings, they just rub me the wrong way.
Might just be me tho
Overall this doesn't feel too dissimilar to Splatoon 2. I'm not convinced by the comments about a match being forfeited because one person less, I only played the standard mode but this wasn't the case for me. To be fair though, it'd be a welcome addition as playing through 3 minutes of 3 vs 4 is painful.
I don't think the teaming with friends and matchmaking have improved enough though for this to get any new fans. I love Splatoon but I'd be embarrassed by how bad that side of it is to ever try convince friends to get it.
@BulkSlash You refuse to play shooters that don't have both motion control and right stick camera control enabled at the same time? That can't possibly be a big list, just pick one or the other
@Quarth also had this lots. I was happy if someone quit continuing as 3 vs 4. Came away very disappointed. 2 was so good and polished.
Disappointed so far. I have had this preordered for months but unsure now. One of my fave games for the wii u and switch. Nintendo don't mess this up for us!
Walls don't count!
Ink your spawn!
@BulkSlash you can disable motion controls in settings
@vio lol Thatsrb2Dude doesn't even know how to play Splatoon
I think I prefer Splatoon 2 just about more, and I don't know if it's just me, but the maps feel way smaller than the ones in two.
Splatoon version 2.5 maybe. There really didn't look like much was updated or new. Game play seemed slower. Dont know why this took years when all it is some more maps of the same Splatoon 2 game.
I had a great time. A little salty about the last-minute disconnects: Without them I'd easily have gotten to Ruler+3. I loved the tricolor mode (playing for Team Paper), but I'm not sure it's balanced yet: We won most of our matches there, whereas in the first half we lost a bit more than we won. The meta will presumably evolve to get it finely tuned as it is in Splatoon 2 by now.
@sadmapboi I like the universe, but these kinds of games are just not for me. I need more campaign mode for this to be worth it.
Having played it, all I can say is it's par for the course for Splatoon. It was nice being able to test out the weapons, especially the new ones, while waiting for a match to start.
But if there's one thing I didn't like, it was how Deep Cut was on top of their flying floats, and you couldn't see them dance or or hear them sing as they flew around Splatsville. And their appearances on the TV screens scattered throughout the city didn't really do them justice.
Compare that with the first two Splatoon games, where you saw the Squid Sisters and Off the Hook in their full glory, and you could hear what they were singing.
I sure hope they fix that in the full release. And the campaign mode better be better than the first two games.
So much controversy! I hope all the uncomfortable slurs stop soon....
@CodyMKW Are you saying splat 3 doesn’t feel smoother? It definitely does.
@CodyMKW DUMBEST COMMENT EVER!! Just wow.. I can't believe you wrote that.
@Grant007 I’m not even going to type all of the stuff that’s new.How in the world is that not enough for you???
@SpiraI bro wasn't impressed at all. Splatoon 2 was one of my favorite games too. Canceled my pre-order, will wait for the videos and then make a decision.
