Apart from the new "competitive play" trailer at the 2022 Pokémon World Championships, Pokémon Company president Tsunekazu Ishihara also announced the new trading card series.
In a separate video, Atsushi Nagashima - Pokémon TCG Game Director at Creatures Inc. - explained how the teaser video was a "world-first sneak peek" at the new Scarlet & Violet TCG series, launching in 2023.
Here's exactly what he had to say about the video above:
The "ex" logo that was shown in the video symbolizes this coming series. The design depicts refined strength and evokes vitality. Pokémon ex will appear in each Stage of Evolution: as Basic, Stage 1, and Stage 2 Pokémon. They will have high HP as well as powerful abilities and attacks. However, knocking out one of these Pokémon will let you take two Prize cards.
Although getting a Pokémon ex knocked out by your opponent can cost you two Prize cards, Stage 2 Pokémon in particular have the power to turn the tide of battle in an instant, with high HP rivaling that of Pokémon VMAX and powerful attacks that require little energy. Strong Stage 2 Pokémon ex are just one example of how the play environment will become more diverse, allowing for a variety of Pokémon to shine.
Additionally, an important theme of Scarlet & Violet series is "comebacks," and we plan to introduce Pokémon, Trainer cards and Energy cards that can turn the tide of the battle this way. In this upcoming series, you'll see both familiar Pokémon and newly discovered Pokémon appear as Pokémon ex, so please stay tuned for more information.
The Pokémon TCG: Scarlet & Violet Series will further expand the game as the new standard for the Pokémon TCG and will shake up the game in many ways. Please continue to look forward to the evolution of the Pokémon TCG.

OLD LOWER CASE ex'S ARE BACK OH MY GOD

My favourite chase cards are always the ones that are true to the stage they'd usually be (think old ex's and GX's for instance) so seeing them reveal this makes me so damn happy. That Magnezone HP is....wow though (at least VMAX's were somewhat balanced by giving up 3 Prizes, this buck gets to have their HP whilst giving up one less!).
Gutted they’re still not confident enough to bring out Pokémon Sex cards. Disgraceful.
@nessisonett I don't think they have it in them. The gimmick for the last gen were V cards after all
@nessisonett Real ones remember #Pokemonmastersex
@Jackpaza0508 Not quite as good as #susanalbumparty
Ruby and Pokémon Sapphire flashbacks. ❤️💙
Hey, it's lowercase ex! I certainly haven't seen this before...
YAY EX CARDS! I love this game, hope this expansion can get people I know back into it so I can play with my real cards. Maybe I’ll even get competitive? I can’t wait for this and the new digital game
Total Munchlax cards: 9
Total Pikachu cards: 196
It looks like a few details about Koraidon and Miraidon ex are still being withheld. Attack cost, hp and that space in between "basic" and other words (also, retreat cost isn't shown, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was free, considering the theme and the attack drawback). Depending on what energy acceleration is like in the new Standard format, Miraidon will probably see more play than Koraidon (since the latter requires you to end your turn). For example, if there are still energy acceleration supporters (like Gardenia's Vigor), then Miraidon could get Pokemon onto the bench, and you would still get to play supporter after use (which can make a big difference in gameplay approach) AND attack.
I'm also excited to see the cards we don't see. I love playing Gym Leader Challenge, and in that format, there are no rule box cards allowed. So no ex cards.
And the mention of "comebacks" being an integral part of the new standard format has me excited. In the recent standard format, there are many, many situations in which you just run into situations where you can't come back or even do damage...even demonstrated by games at Worlds.
That's one reason I love the Gym Leader Challenge format (shameless plug for the format). The format is now officially acknowledged and repped by The Pokemon Company. I've played a decent number of games in the format, and it really rewards skillful play. You can be at a type disadvantage and still pull out wins, and there are rarely situations in which one turn decides the outcome of the matchup. And maybe more than any other format, it requires adaptation. You could have key players prized and have to adapt your strategy on the fly, without being in the situation of like "this game's over before it started".
You can check out the rules here: https://gymleaderchallenge.com/
And check out the Tricky Gym discord for matches! The discord is run by the man who introduced the format, and people are often looking for matches to play online.
sucks that walmart and target stop selling them cause of all those greedy scalpers swiping them all.
@nessisonett I think I misread that twice
I, for one, am glad to accept technojebus as our new savior and underlord
I started playing competetive Pokemon TCG during Platinum set and played until year 2016 so I know more about the EX era than old ex era. These HP numbers have become quite massive.
