Developer Type-Moon, known for the Tsukihime series (which includes the fighting game series Melty Blood) and the Fate series, has never really cracked the Western market with its visual novels. While beloved worldwide by genre fans, the developer's VN output has never been localised. Which makes this announcement even more exciting for Type-Moon fans.
Witch on the Holy Night marks the first time a Type-Moon visual novel has received an official English localisation, and it's coming to Switch on 8th December. This was announced at this weekend's Anime Expo during the Fate/Grand Order panel. Published by Aniplex, this release is an enhanced version of the 2012 game of the same name (Mahoutsukai no Yoru) and will include voice acting, higher definition artwork, and will be playable in English, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.
Here's what publisher Aniplex has to share about the upcoming release so far:
What is Witch on the Holy Night?
Set in 1980s Japan, Witch on the Holy Night tells the story of fan-favorite TYPE-MOON character Aoko Aozaki as she attempts to navigate the complex world of magecraft while also dealing with the everyday struggles of life as a high school student! Players will experience the thrilling origin story of this much-beloved character, penned by Kinoko Nasu, famed creator of the Fate series, himself.
High-Definition Remaster
The original PC version’s beautiful visuals will be remastered in spectacular high-definition format to create a modern gaming experience sure to delight TYPE-MOON fans and franchise newcomers alike! Prepare for the definitive version of one of Kinoko Nasu’s most beloved works.
Fully Voiced Dialogue
In addition to the visual update Witch on the Holy Night will receive, the remaster will include new, fully voiced dialogue. Now players will hear every word from every beloved character performed by a cast of incredible voice actors in the original Japanese.
Deep, Expansive Narrative
Witch on the Holy Night provides an incredibly rich narrative with a delightful cast of characters for players to enjoy. In addition to a main story, the remaster will also include two side stories.
We currently don't know whether the game will be digital-only, but we're just hugely excited to see Type-Moon get some love over here in the West!
Witch on the Holy Night launches on the Switch on 8th December and it'll cost $39.99. So far, only a North American release has been confirmed. Will you be picking the game up? Let us know in the comments!

Always nice to see more visual novels getting localised. Can never have too many.
Nice! Need to make sure there is nothing funky about the translation before deciding for certain if I'm getting it, but I'm interested
Hell yes.. Day one physical for me! Hopefully now they'll finally localize Tsukihime!
@CowCatcher LOL is about all I can say. Apparently you haven't played Island, The Grisaia Trilogy, The House in Fata Morgana, If My Heart Had Wings or Aokana: Four Rhythms Across the Blue.
I keep my Japanese pre-order anyhow, zero trust in Aniplex releasing a physical over here.
(for people that don't know, 99% of the time Aniplex acts like Europe doesn't even exist)
@CowCatcher There are some VNs with wonky translations indeed, but the more known titles don't have that issue.
But again I understand, I played a ton of VNs on PC and there is a ton of those there translated by some chinese company with Google translate, but they are easy to recognise.
Some of them did come to the Switch too, I tend to avoid them for multiple reasons, mostly the translation but also most of the chinese translated ones tend to be crap story wise anyhow.
This one is interesting, i really got a bit tired of fate/ already so now i am curious what their other works are like
@JustMonika to be fair to @CowCatcher, there are VNs with suspicious translation choices. You mentioned House in Fata Morgana for example, that one has that line where tsundere was translated fragile male ego.
Then there are Moenovel, the translator of the "18+ version" of If my heart had wings that censored it down because they want their games to be suitable for 12yo french girls
I agree there are a lot of good VNs, but there is no denying that some have funky translation choices. (And bad translations are not exclusive to VNs either)
Oh nice, been waiting for Type Moon to do a localized VN of theirs.
Now do Fate and Tsukihime, you cowards.
I'm hoping to play this on my Switch Pro before the end of the year, but either way I'm getting it.
Please tell me it does not have out of place awful sex scenes like other Type Moon games.
@SigmaNoire This one is sex-scene free - ever since the censored version of F/SN came out in '07 they've felt the need to drop the eroge aspect of their games to become a bit more legitimate in the public eye
@SigmaNoire free tip
Sex scenes are a 100% no go on consoles.
So for people that avoid them, consoles are safe.
As for PC, often you need a patch because games sold and Steam and so on don't have them most of the time to begin with.
I'll keep an eye on this. Looks fun!
That's cool. It'll probably end up in the backlog, though. Still need to get through the Zero Escape games, the Phoenix Wright games, the semicolon anthology, Famicom Detective Club, original Fate, and Umineko before I can get to the more off-beat VNs.
@Tobiaku The only thing that offends me about the Switch visual novels I own and have played is the lack of dabonkers and H scenes which is why I have a laptop coming in tomorrow specifically for 18+ eroge. I've already purchased several in anticipation of getting the laptop such as The Grisaia Trilogy (Fruit, Labyrinth, Eden), Aokana: Four Rhythms Across the Blue, Nekopara series, Making Lovers, Love Triangle Trouble, NinNinDays, NekoMiko and so forth. I bought all these from Jastusa and Denpasoft where there's no patching needed because they're already the 18+ versions from the start. Really wish I could find an 18+ version of If My Heart Had Wings without having to jump through hoops and install multiple patches to get it running properly because it's my favorite VN right behind Island.
@SigmaNoire Not on the Switch, lol. You know that would only be on PC right? The whole reason I'm having a laptop delivered tomorrow. This game in particular is all ages though so no need to worry, lol. No nudity or H scenes irregardless of platform.
