Another day, another Metroidvania! You love to see it, right? The latest title, 9 Years of Shadows, comes from developer Halberd Studios and is due for launch on Switch later this year.
Visually, the game looks spectacular, with some lovely use of colour and lighting throughout. We're also pleased to see some familiar faces lend their talents to the game's music, including Mega Man's Manami Matsumae, Metal Gear Solid's Norihiko Hibino, and Castlevania's Michiru Yamane.
Here's some more info from publisher Freedom Games:
For 9 long years, the world has been submerged in the deepest of shadows, robbing every object and living creature of their color. Once a thriving civilization, the people have forgotten the warmth of the sun, the joy of laughter and the promise of a prosperous future.
Many brave souls have tried to venture inside the corrupting depths of Talos Castle, a long-abandoned orphanage from which the curse stemmed, but with each futile attempt, resignation became the daily fare for the people, all hope lost. Except for one person.
Armed with little other than her halberd and sheer nerve, Europa’s daunting quest is clear: enter the castle, find the source of darkness, and return color to the lands before it is too late.
We'll keep an eye out for more info on the game's release in the coming weeks and months.
What do you think of 9 Years of Shadows? Reckon you'll add it to your Metroidvania collection? Let us know!

I can't wait for it. I did the kickstarter for the game but getting the steam version. From the kickstarter alpha demos I have played it is going to be a good game.
We didn't see much gameplay in that trailer, but it looks lovely. I'll be looking forward to seeing more.
I kickstarted too. Much excite.
It looks quite nice.
It's definitely an attractive-looking game. Will keep my eye on it.
But it's in a line of interesting Metroidvanias a mile long. I haven't even played SteamWorld Dig 2, Ender Lillies, or that Deedlit game yet.
@Ralizah When I realized how saturated the genre became, I basically have stuck to The Messenger, Super Metroid, and SOTN. It’s really hard to find games that aren’t just cosmetically different from each other.
I thought this game wasn't coming out until 2023...? Was the Kickstarter for this game funded sooner than expected, or did something else happen? Either way I am looking forward to playing 9 Years of Shadows (which I could've sworn had a different name)!
The music and art direction alone make this one to watch for in my opinion.
