It's that time, once again, for the Famitsu Japanese charts; this time they cover the week of 21st to 27th March/
Of course that brings us into the launch of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, which we already knew had enjoyed a fast sales start in the UK. The good news for fans of the pink one is that has also been evident in Japan, where it shifted a substantial 380,060, way out ahead of everything else and representing a terrific start.
There are seven Switch titles in the top 10, all told, with the rest being familiar evergreen titles.
- [NSW] Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Nintendo, 03/25/22) – 380,060 (New)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 18,931 (4,518,473)
- [NSW] Pokemon Legends: Arceus (The Pokemon Company, 01/28/22) – 17,941 (2,195,400)
- [PS4] Elden Ring (FromSoftware, 02/25/22) – 13,918 (307,546)
- [NSW] Minecraft (Microsoft, 06/21/18) – 13,305 (2,574,724)
- [PS5] Ghostwire: Tokyo (Bethesda Softworks, 03/25/22) – 10,144 (New)
- [NSW] Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Nintendo, 12/07/18) – 8,982 (4,822,623)
- [PS4] Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin (Square Enix, 03/18/22) – 7,720 (36,664)
- [NSW] Mario Party Superstars (Nintendo, 10/29/21) – 7,710 (920,035)
- [NSW] The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Nintendo, 03/03/17) – 5,731 (1,987,301)
Hardware sales remained consistent with the Switch OLED holding top spot, though there was a bump for PlayStation 5 - likely due to a much-needed boost in stock.
- Switch OLED Model – 49,037 (1,490,352)
- PlayStation 5 – 32,364 (1,271,750)
- Switch – 21,784 (18,138,373)
- Switch Lite – 12,979 (4,648,386)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 3,110 (225,767)
- New 2DS LL (including 2DS) – 280 (1,184,344)
- Xbox Series X – 246 (89,231)
- Xbox Series S – 144 (75,059)
- PlayStation 4 – 13 (7,819,392)

I'm thinking I will pick up a physical copy this weekend. The demo was great.
Wow, pretty impressive! It will become the best selling game in the franchise for sure. Again.
Switch's magic.
A great sales for PS5 machine. 😃
And for XBOX Series X/S.... it was very obvious Japanese gamers still don't like XBOX brand. 😆
Elden Ring needs to 'git gud'! Kirby KO'd it's lifetime sales in it's opening week!
(For the love of God, this is a silly post. You don't have to start defending and explaining it.)
Lovin' the subtitle!!
@GrailUK never criticise Elden Ring. Ever.
@WiltonRoots I look forward to playing it on Switch 2 haha
Thought xbox finally was getting some momentum but sales are dying.. PS5 finally got some stock in the market but boy i feel bad for Ghostwire Tokyo, its a game set in Japan after all
I wonder why Gran Turismo 7 isn't in the top 10 anymore. If there's still any good will left from GT players, Polyphony had probably killed all respects from them now.
This is very serious business, everyone. We need to focus on this intently, or we'll all explode.
Kirby, just, can't, stop, getting, W's
Forgotten Land is the best Kirby game I've played since Super Star and Planet Robobot. As for PS5 gaming I've been subjecting myself to even more psychological torture with Returnal again. I find I play a lot better when I skip chests, maximise weapon proficiency then go back and open weapon chests afterwards for higher leveled weapons. Skipping health pickups is a good survival tactic too.
Went slightly off topic there didn't I but oh well.
@BartoxTharglod Shhhh. You really don't need to
Kirby is huge in Japan. I'm really jealous since they get all the cool merch and events.
As soon as I'm done playing Majora's Mask, I'm getting my copy.
@BartoxTharglod I’d be amazed if Elden Ring has sold close to 700,000 digital copies in Japan
@BartoxTharglod My post clearly just went from the PS4 figure in the charts currently. It of course sold more with the PS5 included. (Honestly didn't think it needed mentioning...)
@BartoxTharglod ah, ok. That’s still very impressive, even over more than one system.
Yeeeeeeeess I'm so happy 😊 This game is stunning and absolutely deserves it 👏
I find it interesting that the Famitsu charts still track 2DS XL/LL sales. Are they still being manufactured in Nintendo's home country, or is this just excess stock? I can't speak for the rest of the planet, but I know they're almost impossible to find new nowadays for a decent price in the US.
@BartoxTharglod So...umm...let's just talk about what we know then. Physical sales. And PS5 physical software is pretty woeful.
@BartoxTharglod 1 million with all platforms combined.
Demo was a fantastic idea for Kirby. Played it and bought the game using voucher. Loving it so far and would never have been massively into Kirby games before. Demos seem to pop up more often for some of the more first party games on switch and I am all for it.
that is more than 100,000 copies than what Star Allies did in its first week
Kirby and the Forgotten Land was comfortably the biggest retail launch in the series history. The previous record was Kirby SuperStar Ultra on NDS, which sold ~261,000 retail copies at launch back in 2008.
Including digital should put Forgotten Land's total launch at ~500,000 copies. This was a huge launch for Kirby - in fact, Super Mario Odyssey is the only 3D platformer with a bigger opening.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Who need Gran Turismo 7 if Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still way more interesting to play? 😁
@BartoxTharglod What is missing from these charts from what Elden Ring sold is not only Playstation digital, but also PC.
@BartoxTharglod This is Japan. Physical is still a substantial ratio of sales over there even in 2022 due to the physical collection appeal. This isn’t the West where it’s more digital favored.
It matters more with Switch as well because physical cartridges actually has everything on the cartridge/doesn’t require a download [outside of crap incomplete collection ports] to eat up memory space.
Elden Ring is on PlayStation which has long since devalued physical format since it’s a storage space eater regardless
@GrailUK Elden Ring doesn’t have its own cafe
Blimey. Remind me to never make fun of Elden Ring again! SONY and M$ take their gaming very seriously.
@GrailUK Now look what you've done. Back of the room! 👉🏻
@WiltonRoots But...but...awwww ok
Kirby will Swallow your Soul, Swallow your soul! Swallow your Soul!!!
@NinChocolate elden ring is a Breath of the Wild Wannabe PERIOD.
@KirbysAdventure I'm just sad I can't buy the Show 'Right Back at ya' on my Xbox Series S via any streaming digital service....I either have to buy the DVDs or Blu ray set.. but I'm all about Digital.
@GrailUK PS: elden ring is OVERRATED!
@EvilKenpachi unlike the demo for Balan Wonderworld.
Not such a great idea.
@NintendoEternity Idk man. Sounds to me like you're mad it's not on Switch
@Lem1697 you do realize I have an Xbox Series S and a Gaming PC right 😆 🤣
@NintendoEternity I appreciate you taking the bullets for me
@GrailUK anytime lol
