Switch Remake Of Super Famicom RPG Live A Live Gets A New Character Trailer

Has someone had any experience playing this game before? I’ve never heard of it but looks great and intriguing. The same concept of different stories united … just like Octopath Traveler… but I hope the execution is way better.

Wow, that looks amazing. I am definitely keeping an eye on this one. I will get this if it reviews well.

I think I like the Twilight Of Edo Japan the most out of all but the others are great too!!!

Also does anyone have any idea how long the game takes?

This game is basically just Octopath Traveler but instead of 8 characters/stories, you get 7 characters/stories. It's odd that I never noticed it until now but then again Live-a-Live came out decades before OT. You even get to choose which character story order you like to play them as well just like OT and even got OT's 2D HD graphics. The only differences is that instead of these characters being from different part of the same world, they are from different time period just like Chrono Trigger and Eternal Champions.

I'm really looking forward to this! I've heard great things about this game for years, so it's cool that it's finally getting a proper localization. I love the HD-2D style as well, so I'm happy they're using that for this remake! As a massive JRPG fangirl, I'm both excited for all the ones coming to Switch this year and wondering how I'll manage to get through all of them, ha.

@anoyonmus According to HowLongtoBeat, the original version took anywhere from 18.5 to 29 hours depending on how much side content you played through. No clue if the remake will add anything to bump up that playtime or not, but I'm personally down for a shorter JRPG either way. It's by the same director as Chrono Trigger, and that game was a short yet fantastic experience with perfect pacing, so I'd imagine this will be similar.

@fafonio, as MiyamotoHimself, I have played the original when it came out. I don't want to spoil it for you, but the game play and mood is very different for each characters. It has my seal of approval.

@fafonio i haven't played octopath traveller so I can't speak to that but I think it has a pretty great way of bringing them all together; you may find each of the 7 stories leaning a bit into the clichés of their respective genre/time period but it's in service of a greater unity at the end (which is REALLY HARD TO TALK ABOUT WITHOUT SPOILING THE WHOLE GAME SO)

@anoyonmus @ReaperMelia i put 28 hours in myself to do everything, but I could see that max amount being 2-3 hours longer/shorter depending on player (and considerably less if you don't do everything in the final chapter)

it's one of those games where I could see the price point being a bit of a sticking point for its length, but I think it did a wonderful job with its time and would be a bit shocked if they added more to such a clean-cut experience

@somebread That sounds like a good length to me! With all the huge JRPGs I've got on my radar, something that's shorter and tighter in its pacing is certainly welcome as well.

@arrmixer - Front Mission 1 & 2, Chrono Cross, Chocobo GP, and this are all coming from Square right now. After earlier in '21 they announced a shift in focus for a "broader market" which only thing was being ignored was Nintendo.

This tells me 2 things. 1) Square ain't happy with how their PS5 efforts are doing, and 2) Square's entire backlog is on the table. This includes Chrono Trigger.

They literally brought Radical Dreamers back.

@Specter_of-the_OLED The game is nothing like Octopath Traveler other than it has characters who’s story intertwine. Each scenario has a different combat system & some of the plot lines feature very little combat at all & focus more on exploration & story.

I welcome more and more games with the HD 2D style.
The artstyle is too good to not use.

It's attractive, but the pricing is wack. Definitely not paying $49.99 for a visually touched up SNES game.

I just hope the DQIII remake's price isn't similarly eye-watering.

I'm sincerely interested in this one, because of how they remade it. It looks amazing.

@Paraka I honestly don't see the ps5 hype. im suprised it's sold at all. Imo It has barely any exclusive games.

I'm a little surprised they're showing off Oersted like that.

@Travisemo007 PS4 sold amazingly well despite it taking years for worthwhile exclusives to start hitting the system. The system's popularity made so little sense you actually had Playstation execs on record openly wondering about what made it such a hit.

With that said, the PS5's library has had a pretty decent start, given the circumstances it launched in.

As a former Japanese-exclusive I'll pick it up regardless, but this looks incredible. Playing different characters in wildly different places and time periods is really interesting.

@Dreamcaster-X Well I never said it plays like OT, just that it basically progress like it which is why I add the difference part.

Never thought I'd experience a second golden age... or maybe a... diamond age?

One thing I like is they're going for bigger sprites.

The original was good but I felt some of the sprites were scrunched, it was a bit funny that certain overworld sprites like the Behemoth were barely bigger than Cube. But in this trailer is as massive as it should be.

@fafonio I've played it. I enjoyed it much more than Octopath because each character scenario is very unique in story and gameplay/narrative structure.

So Pogo(Caveman) is very different to Cube(Robot) and so on. The weakness of Octopath IMO was that each chapter was felt samey regardless of character and the staggered chapters limited what could happen in each one.

Whereas LiveALive runs free with its scenarios.

I am hoping for a physical version, I think the Japanese version has English included. I played the fan translated version and loved it, so I am really looking forward to this!

@Ralizah I have no doubt that the DQIII HD-2D remake is going to be $50-60. I would love to be wrong, but I definitely won’t mind paying a full price for that.

I'm definitely interested in this one! I'm getting some Chrono Trigger vibes in regards to the different time periods. Hoping this gets a physical release; it's too gorgeous to NOT collect lol.

Question, did this game get mentioned in a Nintendo Life video in the past on something that needs to be imported. I somehow knew this game and the entire premise behind it but can't remember where I saw someone talk about it.

Already placed my pre-order for this. Though I feel what would make this great, is giving you the option to play with original soundtrack, just like collection of mana. Maybe it's just me, but vgm on the snes is legendary. Would I also be asking to much for the original game as freebie?

@jrt87 ya kinda, you could always put a SSD In a PS4. And graphics alone isn't enough to sell me on a system. It still doesn't have enough exclusives to make it worth any money imo.

@Travisemo007 - I know this is anecdotal, but most my friends are all exclusively PCMR types. About half of them own a Switch.

Not a single one owns the either two systems for two gens now.

@jrt87 You can't play your old games with lightning fast load times. All PS4 titles still load just as slowly as they did while running on PS4. That's one thing where Microsoft is doing better, since Series S and X generally load everything quickly, even old Xbox One games.

I've pretty much only known of Live A Live from that awesome Squaresoft Final Fantasy music game on 3DS. I think I bought a DLC song that's from Live A Live.
Looks good, and of course I wish that engine ran at 60fps on Switch (would look so awesome in handheld).

Do any of the characters meet one another like in Octopath? Just curious.

@jrt87 My experience with my PS5 is that PS4 games still load slowly, or quickly, but basically the same as when I played them on PS4 Pro. If a native PS5 version is released, then that loads quickly. I've really liked having the new PS5 version of Ghost of Tsushima because it now has 3 second load times. But on my Series X everything seems to load quickly. I play Rocket League on both, and only the Series X loads in 1 or 2 seconds, my PS5 still loads Rocket League in the same 7 or 8 seconds that Switch and PS4 take to load an arena/new game. Snappy load times are really easy to get used to!

@Zeropulse I doubt it. This game is like 20 years old and was never thought to ever been released outside of Japan...most gamers didn't know or completely forgot about this game

That said, I can't wait to play this.

So intrigued by this one. It's like Chrono Trigger x Octopath Traveller which is a super win for me. Not to mention I knew most of the SNES RPGs that didn't come out of Japan, but this one slipped by me. It seems like LAL has comparisons to Phantasy Star III and Romancing Saga slightly too. Can't wait to try this one.

Meanwhile, poor Terranigma still awaits a western (NA western) release...

Octopath looks like a proper remaster of FFVI yet they refuse to remake that game in this style. Meanwhile they release this random and obscure game with the visual upgrade. I don't really get it. It looks interesting but stories have come a long way since Super Nintendo and I'm not sure a story driven game from that era, with no nostalgia factor, can deliver.

@Travisemo007 This is an argument I never understand. Like people do realize that a systems output means that not only can things look better, but it can also render more complex or more numerous things at once? Like it's not just prettier, things gain objectively more depth either mechanically or in design. Like every switch game has the same sort of map design because you can only render so much on screen at once. Like compare MH world to rise. Yeah, world is prettier, but that's not the main takeaway. The maps in rise are relatively bland because the switch can't handle the verticality, environmental assets, or alternate paths like in world. It being pretty is like the least advantageous thing about having more power to work with

@FredsBodyDouble It's pretty cliche because they're all based on movies and anime tropes for the most part, but the plot twist and overall plot holds up. It's more put together than the saga games and honestly while individually the character stories don't have much going on compared to octopath because each story goes exactly how you would think, the last chapter at least gives a good justification for them all fighting together and the overacrhing plot is more clear, even of octopath kinda ripped live a live off a bit when it comes to basically structure of the last bit.

For example, I can tell you the basics of every characters story and who the bad guy is and what was going on in love a live and I haven't played it in fifteen years, but I couldn't do that for octopath and I played that again last year.

How is it Live A Live gets a remake and its first-ever English release, and ends up being only my fourth most-anticipated Square Enix game from the Direct? They really brought the goods.
