2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the brutal, bloody, and violent fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat. NetherRealm has already confirmed it's moved on from Mortal Kombat 11 after two years of DLC - to focus on its "next project", so what's next?
Although there have been a lot of rumours over the past year that the studio could be working on a superhero fighter, NetherRealm's senior production manager, Jonathan Andersen, has now uploaded an image via the social media platform Twitter, which appears to tease MK12.
Up in the top right of this shot - filled with artwork and posters of past entries, there's a file on the computer monitor labelled "MK_12 Mast..." and in an email on the screen, you can make out the following lines:
"fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace...take extra care with this material."
It definitely seems like this could be an intentional internal 'leak' to generate some excitement. The photo was only up for about 10 minutes before it was removed, which kind of plays into the whole thing.
Considering NetherRealm wrapped up MK11's development last year, it only makes sense for it to now be working on the next entry. VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb also claimed NR was prioritising MK12 over a possible superhero fighter because of uncertainty tied to its future under its parent company (Warner Bros).
What would you like to see from the next Mortal Kombat game? Did you check out the 11th entry on Switch? Comment below.
I wonder who the guest characters will be. If it’s more horror icons, they may as well make an officially licensed version of Terrordrome themselves and add some more characters to the roster.
I thought they said the next game by them wasn't going to be another MK game, or am I wrong?
Blech. MK11 wasn't as great as I hoped with a wack story mode and awkward kombat. The features that demand a constant internet connection like the Towers were also annoying. Here's hoping they take time with the next one.
12 is also represented by MK*1* material on the left and MK*2* material on the right.
How about a Mortal Kombat Collection?
@Sinton not Mortal Kombat Collection, you meant Mortal Kombat Kollection.
MK for life, baby! Epic news.
The image shows material from MK1&2 and Injustice 2 (don’t know where that version of WW is from).
Surely a more logical assumption is MKvsDC2.
@Sinton I’d love an arcade collection on par with the Street Fighter release with similar museum content. MK retro collection is an obvious anniversary release. It could be what the image is hinting at.
As if we didn't already know this was coming. That's like confirming a new Marvel movie. Well duh! Too bad switch ain't getting it. MK 11 barely runs on the thing. Just look at the hack job of the krypt on switch. They couldn't even give us a sky or any kind of background at all. Just fog. It looks like a PS2 game LOL. The framerate stutters like crazy during the final boss fight too.

Ok hear me out
But Freddy Fazbear cameo character
Pretty much every leak is an intentional 'leak' nowadays, at least this one makes it obvious and has a bit of fun with it.
I know they won't but I'd love them to return to digitized sprites.
Could be Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 remastered.
Hope they are treating their developers better this time.
@ManaOwls Would love Mortal Kombat Trilogy with online play on Switch
@tourjeff That is (unfortunately) what they called it back in 2008.
if Mortal Kombat 12 comes out soon, I hope it's not on the Switch.
Mortal Kombat 11 is decent on Switch, it runs fine. But MK12 will undoubtedly be made with the PS5/Xbox Series X in mind. And that would be hell to squeeze onto the Switch.
@PBandSmelly oh. no thank you.
@PBandSmelly You're hired!
If this is a legit email, than saying it's confidential just confuses me.
I think we're getting multiple games. Or just the one.
1. Mortal Kombat 12
2. Injustice 3
3. DC vs. Mortal Kombat
4. Mortal Kombat anniversary collection.
I think it's DC Vs. MK and the anniversary collection. Or the developer is just screwing around messing with fans like myself who overthink this sort of stuff, and we get nothing.
@Truegamer79 "Barely", yet the game runs at 60FPS and looks great. The only part that has issues is the Krypt, and it's a still fun to go through it anyways.
Great! More MK is always welcomed. Funny to see comments on a Nintendo site that say they don't want the game to come out on the Switch. MK11 works great on the console, and it found great success on it. Waiting eagerly for an announcement.
@CharlieGirl - Well, that and the fact they won't even try to make it fit.
I kinda want them to make an action RPG in the MK universe. Something like Konquest mode from MK Deception, but not janky *****.
@CharlieGirl Yeah but then how will Netherealm Realm Studio and Warner Bros. be able to make them extra money. They would lose out big time, remember MK11 sold very well on Switch.
@PBandSmelly even better, Garfield played by Chris Patt
@JR150 bruh what MK11 is great and aftermath was amazing
@Edu23XWiiU yeah I have over 100 hours on MK11 and I laugh when people are like “b b b but the hair is roughly polygonal during cutscene transitions!!!”
If you liked the game, that's fine. I respectfully disagree. It just wasn't as great as I thought it would be.
Would prefer it if they made Injustice 3 first, though.
@JR150 Really? It's the best MK game I've played since Deception. There's a lot on it, and it's quite a fun game to play. DLC has been great for it as well.
It looks more like a Mortal Kombat collection collectible bundle to me
For me, 11 is the first MK game I've played since Armageddon as I wasn't able to play 9 or X due to not having the systems for it. Still found it underwhelming in the end with a poorly-written cinematic story, and the online-only features really dragged it down.
@JR150 Really? I really liked the story, very well told, and the ending means a lot for the next MK. And it's the best good looking MK, so far.
