Marvel's Midnight Suns was arguably a highlight from the recent Gamescom Opening Night Live event; though it was a cinematic reveal it was a flashy title confirmed to be coming to Switch alongside other systems. Developed by Firaxis, perhaps the previous ports of the studio's big releases - XCOM 2 Collection and Sid Meier's Civilization VI - helped to persuade publishing overlords 2K that Nintendo's platform was in reach.
Of course, Firaxis working on a Marvel game had us wondering what the actual game would be like, imagining a Marvel x XCOM scenario. Now there are a couple of fresh videos showcasing the game and it's looking rather interesting. First, here's the flashier of the latest videos:
The video below gives more real insight and a gameplay overview. Battles are tactical, but you utilise cards that you earn for varied abilities. There's also potential for using teammates together for special moves which will tie into relationship mechanics; yes, that's sounding a bit Fire Emblem-esque. Outside of battles there's a hub that serves as the home for the Midnight Suns, and this is an area to explore, experience more story and - of course - form relationships with characters.
Also of note, the development team has reassured fans that the card-based mechanic won't lock game progress behind microtransactions.
It looks like an intriguing setup to us, check it out below.
It goes without saying that the Switch port will need some compromises in comparison to the footage used in the trailers, but it's also feasible to imagine a version of this scaled down to the system. For those of us not exactly keen on the idea of paying for Cloud Editions of games on Nintendo's hardware, it's pleasing to see a major multi-platform title like this come to the Switch.
Are you excited about Marvel's Midnight Suns ahead of its release next March? Let us know in the comments!

If I want to play card games, I'd buy a deck of cards.
But whyyyyyy if they could have done a straight up tactical game based on Marvel that would have been glorious. It being card based basically nixes my interest in the game beyond the visuals.
@Moistnado
If I wanted to go platforming, I’d leap between the planks and scaffolds of the nearest building site.
If I wanted to go cart racing, I’d go to my local Pontins in a gorilla outfit.
If I wanted a brawler, I would wear ripped denim while walking through Croydon as the pubs let out on a Friday.
@Dromosus -enjoy your simulated rectangles of cardboard.
I like it, still reminds me of Xcom but with a card system. So happy this is coming to Switch natively, nice to seem them explore the Midnight Sons arc of Marvel.
This was honestly a huge highlight from Gamescom. Can't wait to play as Blade! I have him as a Mii Fighter if you ever see him on Super Smash Bros Ultimate 🤣
I'm very excited for this game! The only thing I don't like is the build-the-main-character in a game with well established characters.... such a character tends to feel like he or she is squeezed into the main story very unnaturally
it blends slay the spire (which im playng right now trying the hell to beat the last boss), fire emblem and marvel, this has imense potential... high chance of gettint it..
I'm surprised so many people are getting worked up over "it's cards" the gameplay it's still pretty much the same as X-Com but just cards instead of abilities.
@Moistnado I will! I read ebooks and online versions of newspapers too. I’m so out there that I even leave bits of virtual text at the bottoms of virtual pages that simulate gaming magazines.
I'm happy with it But I really not a fan of the card System thus far.
I'm not normally keen on card-based combat (sans Baten Kaitos) but this could be very good so I'd be willing to get it if it reviews well.
I am definitely sold on this. Not too concerned about the card mechanics, think of it as skills in turn based but with rng elements (at least that's what I assumed). Although not a fan of deckbuilder games, I played a lot of Magic The Gathering when I was a kid/teen. So glad to finally get a Marvel game in the RPG genre. It'll be getting a confidant system as well which is a very welcome addition. I hope there is a lot of lore and story in this which seems to be the case based on what they've shown so far.
@jump yeah the cards I think is just a design/style for the skills. I don't think its a deckbuider like most perceive it to be. I could be wrong though.
I bet they do release a physical deck building game based off this.
Whats with all these cards? Is this some kind of Magik the Gathering?
(Get it? Because of Illyana? ...nevermind)
I play a lot of card-based boardgames, and it's a very good way to introduce a certain amount of randomness and make every fight play out a little differently.
I'm very interested in the game. At this point the only question is what the Switch version will look like - it's definitely not going to look like those trailers! But as long as it doesn't end up looking like Minecraft, I'm pretty sure I'm buying the Switch version for portability.
I'd prefer a justice league game, but it looks okay. I'll try it. It doesn't look great,,tho, as it is, so i can't imagine what the switch version will look like. The xcom games look decent cuz there's nothing to compare them to. We all know what marvel characters look like in movies & other games, so there's a point of comparison that doesn't bode well for the look of this game, tho i realize this has many more moving parts on the screen at once
@jump randomly dealt hands at the start of the mission is what is sinking it as tactical XCom. Imagine building a XCom character up only to have a few of their abilities available in the mission. This game adding RNG to actual abilities you have available is what ruins it for me.
@path4smash not a marvel fan myself, but really like a few deck builders. That would actually make me more interested if it was a deck builder, but i realize I'm not the target audience.
I’m still going to get it but the card aspect takes it off day 1 for me.
Someone should just make a Devil May Cry/Ninja Gaiden style action game starring Blade. That'd be incredibly badass.
@jump I don't really get the hate for card based mechanics either
@path4smash I'm not seeing deckbuilding here, either. I think people are jumping to conclusions about that. There are a lot of ways to use cards in a strategy game, and deckbuilding doesn't seem like the most likely one for this.
I could be wrong, but I'm betting the cards are just used to introduce a little randomness, limit the number of times you can use a particular ability and combine abilities between the characters.
@twztid13 If you're into tabletop games at all, there is actually a pretty cool Marvel deckbuilder called Legendary: Marvel. It's NOT the best deckbuilding game out there but it's definitely a fun time. It's solo or coop, too, so no worries that you won't find anyone to play against.
Expansion packs can end up being a serious money sink, though. I've bought a couple of them for heroes and villains I particularly like, but there are at least a dozen available.
Not really into the randomized card stuff but happy for those that are. Hoping for a different style of RPG from Marvel, personally.
@Aerona @jump
Personally, it's not so much the cards that turn me off, but rather the fact that you'll get random ones every single time you play. I don't like the idea of not being able to plan out what I want to do because I may end up with abilities that put me at a disadvantage and I may desire to restart the level to reroll my cards, thus rendering the random aspect moot in my eyes.
It's okay if you guys like it, but I don't--and not everyone else will either. Different people like different things.
I hate how "cosmetic only microtransactions" are now seen as a good thing, like sure it's better than microtransactions infused with the game's leveling progression.
But that's like instead of a city getting nuked, it's just getting carpet bombed.
It's not actually necessary for big games these days to have microtransactions because "the cost of making games is getting too big".
They're doing this because they'll make higher profit, and the idea that a superhero game is going to sell fan favourite costumes on top of the 60 bucks is telling me that one of the most exciting aspects of a superhero game(playing as one's favorite superhero) is going to be monetized, cosmetic or not it still negatively impacts the game's quality
Maybe its just me, but I didn't see so much X-Com in the battle system as I did the battle system from South Park: The Fractured But Whole. Honestly if this plays that accessible I'd be more excited for it, especially seeing that they adapt the system where you can cause chain attacks by knocking enemies into each other like that game. The card thing doesn't bother me, if anything it will be nice to add a bit of RNG to your tactics and work around your strengths and weaknesses.
Never before I have seen so much camera freedom in a strategy game. This is looking much more detailed than I expected. This is how the next Fire Emblem should look maybe
I hope Virtuos is working on this if it's feasible.
@JasmineDragon wow, u can play single player? That's cool. I've actually never played a tabletop game before, so I may give it a try 1 day, thanks for the suggestion.
