Last week, the Nintendo Switch managed to lock out Japan's entire top 30 software chart, becoming the first system to do since 1988. The success was described as "unprecedented", yet here we are, seven days later, and it's all happening again.
That's right, the Switch has managed to take the entire top 30 for a second week in a row. We saw just yesterday that it managed to claim the whole top ten – which is becoming the norm, in truth – but we now have the full chart data in our hands:

Is this going to simply be the norm going forward? Is Switch destined to rule Japan for the foreseeable? We'll let you mull that one over in the comments.

Cue the "Switch has no games" arguments.
Tbh. The Switch is doing better than even Nintendo could've imagined. Such a turnaround from the flop that was the Wii U.
Bob sure likes to pop up in these "Nintendo are performing well" articles don't he?

@RupeeClock He looks understandably smug about it too
@Codessa don’t jinx it let’s just enjoy this moment 😊
@Outerdragon But on the handheld side of things every one was a +
All 30 Switch games with NO PlayStation 4 / 5 games at all from the chart.
Very impressive. 😃
Btw, i imagine the situation for the naysayer of Switch situation. 😏
Naysayer : Switch has No games
Top 30 games are All Switch games revealed
Naysayer : Switch has too many ports / remastered old games
Some ports and remastered games on Top 3
Naysayer : But Switch still has No AAA games
ACNH sales was incredible
Naysayer: You gotta kidding me ! That baby game sold higher than AAA adult games ?!
More and more unique games on Nintendo Switch such as Game Builder Garage, Ring Fit Adventures, etc.
Naysayer : What the heck are they ?! Peoples love those garbage games ?! No 4K, No 120 fps, No Ultra Hyper Realistic graphics ?!
Peoples still keep buying Switch, PS5 sales was very low.
Naysayer : That's it !! F* Nintendo Switch !! I want Nintendo Switch get doomed and banished for too many games for babies and losers !! Holy sheep !!
Walking around and found a lot peoples playing Nintendo Switch in joyful.
Naysayer : AAAAAARGH....!!!! I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE !!! (Collapsed to the ground for keep hating Nintendo Switch all the time)
This will continue until Tales of Arise releases, I think.
Or maybe when Ghost of Tsushima rereleases?
Wow - Nintendo seem to be really connecting with its home country's communities
that a impressive feat for Nintendo, i hope the sucess of Switch don't make Nintendo arrogant again and comit the same mistakes they did with Wii U when they launch the Switch sucessor.
@Outerdragon you're right. This is amazing tosee.
@Specter_of-the_OLED sorry I meant in terms of the - don’t jinx 😊
@Codessa Wait, why is the N64 and Gamecube a negative?
@Bunkerneath My thoughts exactly.. Well, maybe N64 could go either way, I can probably name .. maybe 4 all-time faves from that, but GC? When the first Sega titles started to show up on a Nintendo console, Timesplitters, Burnout and more!
@Bunkerneath
Peoples bought more PS1 than N64 and bought more PS2 than Gamecube.
@Bunkerneath They didn't sell good
We were worried that the NX might be the last thing to come out of Nintendo . . .
@Bunkerneath GCN sold a tenth of what PS2 sold, and that was after a crazy price drop after only a year on the shelves. This was also the time a bunch of franchises abandoned Nintendo. I loved the Cube, and it did get a lot of good games over time, but it was definitely an also-ran.
@Giancarlothomaz don’t underestimate Nintendo’s ability to completely screw it all up. I imagine the “Wii U 2!!!!!!1” will be announced soon.
Wow, I just find it more odd that no PS5 game sold more than 3,580 ( number 30 on the list )
wheres everyone online on Mario Party?
This is just physical sales though, right? So couldn't that just suggest that Sony fans in Japan are trending towards digital releases?
I am not the Nintendoomed guy. But I do want honest reports. This feels misleading in this era of digital purchasing.
@Codessa
don't worry everything is fine you forgot one console:
Virtual boy -
And if you look at the handheld we're fine too :
Gameboy +
Gameboy color +
Gameboy advance +
Virtual boy -
Ds ++
3ds - than +
Switch lite +
All 30 slots! TOP FACT:
This is the first time a console has occupied every position in the top 30 since checks notes LAST WEEK! Unprecidented!
@Heavyarms55
Japan isn't nearly as digital centric as the west. There's a reason so many games get physical releases over there but not here. And, Switch has seen a significant increase in digital that has really closed the gap with other platforms.
So ya. There's nothing dishonest about it. Its just evidence of Switch's strength in Japan. And a precursor to what I think will be Switch breaking the PS2 record for best selling console of all time.
@Kainbrightside Not really. Since Jim Ryan became head of Sony, Japan has been an afterthought to them.
@Anti-Matter Its good but i wouldnt say its all that impressive. Its fully expected in Japan that handheld and Nintendo will outsell the other systems. Japan is heavily weighted towards a portable market.
@Kainbrightside Dont see why it would stick. Sony have said before they support Nintendo and they are needed in the market. And neither Sony or Microsoft see Nintendo as competition. They know Nintendo is after an entirely different market. both MS and Sony would just be happy the market is going well.
@Anti-Matter Just go to PushSquare you’ll hear all the naysaying and rationalizations.
@Heavyarms55 But the fact that it's physical only also means that no Switch digital games are factored in either. Once factored in it's likely that Switch will still take the top 30.
I think the shutout continues until Tales of Arise comes out in September.
@Heavyarms55 There’s some tilt for sure, but it’s not like it’s not going to cut both ways (Switch sells digital too) significantly enough to change the chart.
Scarlet Nexus is really the game you would expect to be lingering at the bottom there, but the fact that it’s split on PS4/PS5 (and selling better on PS5), plus the increase in PC popularity in Japan so Steam peels some sales off too.
Also, two weeks in a row making headlines, you have to imagine Sony would comment if they had some digital numbers to change the narrative.
This is really a Sony defeat more than a Nintendo victory, but the most interesting thing to me is the lifetime sales of the games that chart. It’s crazy how long the tail is on some of these games, and crazier still that Sony currently has nothing like that in Japan. Ratchet can sell a couple thousand copies this far from it’s release?
@Inrts99 Exactly. We can also infer what ought to be there from other storefront charts, which is Scarlet Nexus and you get a better picture of why Sony isn’t charting: split base and PC competition cutting in.
@Anti-Matter I am very happy for Nintendo.I have a TON to play. Just not happy with Nintendo relying on regurgitated stuff…I get the business aspect of it, but just not too much to be excited about as far as original content.
The streak will end for sure once the new Tales of Arise game releases.
Still amazed at how poorly Monster Hunter Stories 2 has sold in Japan
That is pretty incredible.
This should be some kind of indicator that hybrid consoles are the way to go, as long as there is a strong library to back it up. It offers something for everyone
Looks like this might be the norm for a bit.
As the days go by, nintendo keeps doing better <3
@sanderev Considering that only three of the games on the list are labeled as new releases, and the rest are ports and aged releases, the no games argument seems to hold up.
@drewber2635 Probably more of an indicator that hardware for the other systems is more difficult to come by at reasonable prices, if at all, and that the other consoles seem to be having a slower stream of releases, lately. It’s easy to dominate when the competition isn’t putting up a fight.
@BloodNinja I disagree, even ports of games released on Switch are still games released on Switch. Especially if those games are selling better than the games on the original system.
Did this news get posted on Pushsquare? You may say 'of course not Grail, there are no Playstation games.' but if it was all Playstation games occupying this chart, a part of me fears we would see a 'Nintendo kicked out of the charts' type headline instilling that sense of doom the internet types like to create lol. Followed by 'Do Nintendo need to be worried? Leave a comment below.'
@sanderev Aaaaand the other systems are still priced highly and are hard to find. Like I said, when the competition isn’t putting up a fight, it’s easy to be on top.
This is really impressive, no matter how hard some folks want to damage control for the lack of PlayStation.
The fact that releases dating back from 2017 on Switch are beating fresh releases on PlayStation like Ratchet & Clank and Scarlet Nexus(both only about a month old now, and the latter of which released on PS4) is pretty crazy.
How funny it is that the PS5 cannot even sell 3000 units of a game on a week? Switch is obliterating the competition in Japan
And in come the usual comments of "It's Japan so it's not that impressive", despite Japan being the third largest country for video game revenue (by a long, long way).
https://newzoo.com/insights/rankings/top-10-countries-by-game-revenues/
Also; "The new consoles are short of stock so this is expected", despite the fact that the PS5 has broken records as the fastest-selling PlayStation and already sold 10 million units. The install base should be there, people aren't buying the software to go with it it would seem.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.digitaltrends.com/gaming/ps5-breaks-sales-record/%3famp
Don't believe anyone that tries to tell you this isn't impressive. They are either trolling or in denial. Taking all top 30 spots two months on the bounce for a market so large is very, very impressive and will likely never be repeated.
Let's hope Nintendo don't become complacent and rest on their laurels.
now imagine if switch has COD, FIFA, GTA, Assasins Creed, etc... what would Top 30 in other countries would look like ?
@ryu_san
It's been #1 in the overall hardware sales chart for the last 32 months here in America, too (also a GINORMOUS record). I think this system could be going places lol.
@BloodNinja
What color is the sky in your world where this isn't impressive?
It's straight up embarrassing that Sony couldn't even break the top 30 in their home country, this is less about how well the Switch is doing and more about how irrelevant the PlayStation brand is becoming in Japan
@BloodNinja That's not Nintendo's fault. However you would still complain if they gave you a new game every mo.. wait they have a new game every month this year starting with september.
On Wii U it sometimes took 6-8 months between games. On Wii it wasn't as bad, but still not as numerous as on the Switch.
The Switch is even beating the 3DS on the amount of games released. (over time)
Yeah, saying the Switch has no games is just blatantly lying.
@sanderev You're right! And nobody is saying there are zero games, lol. It has games. But things sure have slowed down a lot.
I love Nintendo with all my heart
@Deerock69 Turning graphics settings down to fit on weaker hardware isn't impressive. PC players have been doing that for decades when their hardware isn't up to snuff on more taxing games.
@BloodNinja
I believe you're addressing somebody else. I was talking about taking the top 30 chart for two weeks running in the 3rd largest video game market here on earth. Our sky here is blue, by the bye.
@BloodNinja Since launch the Switch has been getting 1st party games once every 1-3 months. With slow downs often between april-august. So no, it hasn't slown down.
And with the amount of third party / indie releases lately..
@sanderev The first couple years was a deluge of Switch releases, now it's a drip feed. Same thing with their online offerings, apparently! But it's fine, I haven't bought a Switch game since January. Everything that's been coming out, I've just been snagging on PC, or I already have it in my Steam library. Kinda regret buying this system, but oh well! You live and learn.
@Deerock69 Sorry, I was having some conversations regarding system performance, and got mixed up when you replied to me about what was impressive. Yes! Being in the top 20-30 for so long is pretty incredible! My sky here is fairly hazy orange. Wildfires nearby, none of which are threatening homes, thankfully.
What's worse is that last week was Obon, which is when sales of all software increase due to a holiday.
The fact that no PlayStation game could exceed 3,580 retail copies under those conditions is abysmal.
@BloodNinja Drip feed? I've bought 8 games so far this year, and I've already preordered 4 more, stop saying there are no games if releases don't match your taste, the switch got more games than I can keep up with in 2021
@BloodNinja Still, I have bought at least one new game every month this year for the Switch.
