In a new batch of screenshots released for Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water, Koei Tecmo has unveiled several new outfits that will be available for the game's protagonists.
In the upcoming Switch port (the game originally launched on Wii U back in 2014), the original lineup of costumes has been "slightly altered," with new costumes for Yuri, Miu and Ren also being added. Koei Temco says that changing the characters' costumes will let you experience the game's investigations in different ways.
Let's take a look, shall we?
Yuri
Miu
Ren
Excuse us, but where's Ren's 'cutesy goth ensemble'?
Earlier this month, translations revealed that series producer Keisuke Kikuchi would "love" for the potential success of the new Maiden of Black Water port to lead to a new entry in the franchise.
Will you be buying the game when it launches on Switch this October?
Thanks to Greatsong for the tip!

Is this a Dead or Alive sequel?
Now this is nice costumes there
Why isn’t ren in just a speedo? That’d be hilarious
Are the swimsuit costumes new? I remember they had to replace the swimsuit costumes with Zero Suit Samus and Zelda costumes overseas, so are these the same costumes?
So they brought back the "barely a costume" costumes from the japanese version? I was not expecting that.
DEFINITELY a Koei Tecmo move
Can't wait to see how they're censored on PS4 lol
@KayFiOS They're different costumes.
Punk costume is pretty rad but mostly these are fairly bland. Don't quite make up for the loss of the licensed Nintendo outfits.
Remember the Mario & Luigi costume in the remake of 2? That was wild.
@TheFrenchiestFry @Jackpaza0508 No, those costumes aren't in this version. The Japanese website says
*Yuri ‘Swimsuit’ and Fukaba ‘Gravure Swimsuit’ from the Wii U version are not included in this game.

It's in Japanese but you can Google translate it, it's near the bottom of the page inbetween the two cero d ratings.
Sorry, gonna be playing this one on PC...for the best visual performance, of course! 😳 No other reasons!
Ya but it gets to a point where the game becomes about boobies and skimpy outfits rather than horror. It’s like a Dead or Alive X Fata Frame crossover. Don’t get me wrong, that title works and all but why do they feel the need to upsell like this. Oh well…
I have a feeling the more risqué costumes were removed because photo mode was added.
K I was already getting this, but now maybe I need two copies! lol 😝
EDIT: OK if this is censored, I probably won’t bother. Maybe I’ll get a different version or something. (Maybe the Japanese release will have more costumes? Or the PC version, as someone said.)
Wish the Zelda and Samus ones were in here but oh well. Still some good costumes that aren't overly skimpy.
I really hope they have a domestic physical release and not have Playasia as the only option. If they can release Musou games physically here and everywhere else why not this?
To the dumb dumbs who don't play these games but complain about fanservice, you can't use any of these costumes until you beat the game.
Still really disappointing the original gravure costumes got censored out of this version (Sony check, I'm looking at you). At least the lack of Nintendo costumes are understandable.
Wish the yellow and black bikinis did not have shirts over them and that their bikini panties were smaller. Would have been better if you could take of those shirts, but its ok.
I am already buying this game on Switch. I just feel that the Switch is an ideal platform considering it WAS a Wii U exclusive and maybe the controls from the Wii U could work on switch but idk for sure.
I just hope this game sells well
@Tobiaku I believe that’s because of the West and you can also blame Sony too
@TheFrenchiestFry oh boy. Sony gonna censor this
At least the punk and goth costumes sort of fit the setting.
@ChromaticDracula Nah, skimpy outfits you unlock by completing the game does not make it about boobies. Its just a nice little bonus
Baffles me why this is needed in a horror game. But it's Japan, they can't go 5 seconds without sexualizing every female in existence
Wish they kept the Zelda and Samus outfits for the Switch version. I honestly don't care about the skimpy costumes
On a scale from 0 till 10, how scary is this game
@GameOtaku It won't, but Amazon Japan is currently much cheaper than PlayAsia.

@Tobiaku Well that's good then. Honestly, glad you are set up to play it the way it's supposed to be played by default first. I feel like that's done properly... Enjoy the core game first then have some fun.
@EVIL-C This would unfortunately appear to be a download code and not a physical edition. Can't find anything to suggest that there is any English support here either, but my kanji is very rusty and I didn't notice any comments on language, to be fair.
@PALversusNTSC I'd say a solid 9, after playing the Wii U version. It has some really scary scenes and admosphere.
Wrong kind of creepy
@PBandSmelly Its not necessary needed, just a nice bonus. And its not like every female character is made to be sexy by the company that created. I don't remember seeing that type of fanservice in for example Professor Layton.
@mr_somewhere
😱 Really? Play Asia is offering the same for Japan and SE Asia, and they implied it was both physical and have English.
Yuri's punk costume is the best one by a mile...but it's still not great. Even eyeliner can't save it.
At least it's keeping the Dead or Alive DNA?
@EVIL-C Oh no, really? Yeah I could be wrong but the title is:
"ダウンロードシリアル"
Download serial.
@PBandSmelly that's pretty racist of you to smear an entire country like that.
Definitely Koei.....
Since we are going to have to wait for the release to really see what they censored I'm not worried about what they take out because I still have the original Wii U Japanese game & I already went ahead & preorder the Japanese Switch ver as well. The only ver I don't have yet is the US. Now I'm thinking about buying it digital just to get the Zelda ect costume.
Anyway the next port I want is XCX & seeing the changes on FF5 Switch makes me worry about XCX might get the chest option removed on all Switch port ver.😳
I never care about alternate outfits in games like this. But, these do look good.
Too bad the actual game still sucks.
Looking forward to this, though I think I'll get it on Steam just in case someone manages to mod all the Wii U costumes back into it (both the Japanese swimsuits & US Nintendo costumes).
I've only had my gaming laptop for a few weeks though & haven't yet tried adding mods to anything so I'm still unsure about how the whole thing works, though.
Nothing like running for your life in your undies.
There's no better way to hunt ghosts than in a wet bikini! That's what I heard Dr. Venkman telling a coed, anyway.
I definitely prefer the Zelda and Samus outfits to these ones or the original ones.
@mr_somewhere
Ah yeah now I see that. I can make out the writing as well. Ehhh 😓. There's way too much conflicting info. https://www.play-asia.com/search/Fatal+Frame%3A+Maiden+of+Black+Water
They don't even have finalized boxart yet, and there's not even a PS5 listing anywhere. I've yet to even preorder, cause I don't feel comfortable because I don't know what I'm getting. 😰
@norwichred DOA sequel? Nah. But it DOES take place in the same universe since Ayane actually has a playable chapter in it.
Hopefully nobody will feel like their right to exist has been denied by adding that swimsuit.
@Steel76 imagine if it doesn’t
This mix of cheesecake outfits and callback outfits from earlier games in the series is actually pretty good. Way better than random Nintendo-themed clothing.
Nothing beats getting spooked out of your bikini bottoms. God, I love Japan.
New DLC includes haunted panties, spooky thong and ghoulie lingerie.
"Kikuchi-San, tell us about the new port, is it more frightening on the Switch?"
[Leans close] "Let me tell you, we have some cracking new panties"
No skeleton suit for Ren? (you look good, Ren!)
stares at the bikini and bewbs owo
I'm assuming since they apparently had tons of time to faff about making the weaboos happy that the game is literally without any faults, yes?
I hope the game ends up with a modding community and they mod back in the cut costumes. I can see the Zelda and Samus costumes getting modded in for sure!
Lots of pathetic people simping / weebing in the comments today.
First rule of hornonomics... Never be horny on main.
@PBandSmelly That's not exclusive to Japan. That type of portrayal of women in horror films have been around the US (and some European countries) since the 1950's. Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Friday the 13th movies, Jaws, Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, heck even Elvira (even though she's just a horror show host) and a whole slew of B-rated Horror Flicks. If anything, Japan was inspired from western influences in this particular case, and have carried that over to horror games with all their homages to the horror genre.
@KayFiOS Unfortunately no original Japanese version langereis or goth Ren; these are new costumes.
@TheDanslator Could be worse, they could pandered to the sjws. And if you don't think thats worse, I take it you out of equality expect the same level of perfection and flawlesness out of any game pandering to them. Can't have any faults in game pandering to them, right? Its not like we know how perfect these new releases will be before it actually releases
@EVIL-C I thought it looked a bit off, the design on the web page very much looks like the download codes for sale I used to see in convenience stories back in Japan.
I'm really disappointed too. I'm still hoping there's some kind of physical edition, I'll still give it a shot regardless as I loved the series and even if this one is apparently fairly divisive I am more than willing to give it a shot.
Nothing says let's explore a haunted mansion like donning a swimsuit.
I guess this stuff sells, at least to teenage boys who for some reason are unaware that Google exists.
@ramu-chan It also sells as a nice bobus for other people who like swimsuits in games, even if they know google exists. Just because someone can google something does not mean its not nice to have in a game too.
Sounds like this game is digital only which is quite disappointing...
I really want to buy this game, but if it's digital only, I'll probably wait until it's on sale.
It's not even in the NA or JP comming soon section on the eshop, so I can't even tell if the JP version supports english, (in case they end up getting it physical).
@Kreko Of the game or the costumes?
I also always fight scary ghosts to the death while wearing a soaking-wet bathing suit, so I can respect the level of realism on show here.
That girl's not wearing pants.
You know what's really scary?
Her creepy claw hands...take a look.
Oh the Nintendo costumes didn't make it, so I guess that means the Wii U version is the definitive version, just like Mario Maker with the mystery mushroom! No Babymetal for you! No Kirisaki, no Mega Man, no Sonic, you get nothing!
@Vexx234 What makes it suck and what makes the others good? Never played Fatal Frame...
@EVIL-C Yeah I need someone to produce an in-depth video or article comparing all the differences between every version of this game. (Each platform’s port from each region, vs the original Wii U game.)
this is the dumbest ***** ***** i've ever seen. straight men have way too much control over the gaming industry
