We knew it would only take so long before there were some impressive creations within Game Builder Garage, and already it seems someone has got a simplified version of Super Mario Kart up and running.
The mastermind behind this goes by the name ZeldaBoi1 on Twitter, and although it "may not feel too much" like the original game, it at least looks the part. The track featured is the all-time classic Mario Circuit 1 and is "just a little more compacted" than the real course.
This recreation also allows players to select from all eight characters in the original Super Mario Kart:
It's amazing to see these sorts of creations after just a few days, so we only expect it to get more impressive from here onwards. A few other creations you might want to take a look at include a Nintendogs concept, DOOM recreation, a Pac-Man one, Game & Watch mini-game, and an Undertale battle.
What do you think of this early attempt at recreating Mario Kart? What other cool creations have you seen so far? Leave a comment down below.

They're only scratching the surface tbh....
Don't be surprised if you see Gran Turismo on this thing.
@JuiceMan_V lmao
I enjoyed seeing the creative contraptions of people who actually understood Labo’s Toy-Con Garage in all four kits when they launched and this will be no different, with a greater focus on just making games and better with the lessons included. Wish they had a proper system to upload levels to enjoy these beyond codes though…
Wow! Now it's time to make MK9, people.
It feels like prep if Nintendo doesn't announce new main title in Mario Kart series at June 15th Direct. xD
Will nintendo sent DMCA takedown requests to sony of people decide to use this game to make nintendo games?
Clever! Can you make your own music for your games?
@darkswabber I would imagine SONY would send a request to Nintendo if any of their games were put up. Still as they aren't shared fromthe game, it's easier to keep underground O.<
I’m waiting for an arcade perfect conversion of Alien Vs Predator on it
Give them a little sand-box dev-game and in the future they will bring new games.
"Nintendo doesnt have third party studios"
Nintendo : fine, we create or our third parties from scratch.
Honestly didn't get the impression you could do this level of game from the pre-release material.
I love GBG but it really does have some glaring omissions. I hope Nintendo keeps updating this thing and doesn't just let it die, because a proper browser system for finding games or following creators, not to mention some kind of modelling/rigging system (doesn't have to be fancy) and a simple music sequencer, would take this from a 6 to a 9 for me.
I would love for this to be something akin to the Pico8.
@darkswabber this isn't even Dreams. Why would Nintendo send anything over a work that doesn't exist outside its own licensed hardware/software combo?
I'm excited to try fake Doom, fake Mario Kart, and all the other cool 60fps fakes people can program in this garage!
The review said you can not create custom assets, only those boxes and pre-made characters. How did they got the MK sprite-assets?
@bimboliquido yes you can draw custom sprites
@HefHughner you can create 2D sprites but not 3D models
@Roxas_ Thanks for clarifying. Missed that. Now I think I have to. buy it.
HOLY BEES THIS IS AMAZING WHAT
Cease and desist?
@bimboliquido thats what I was wondering, I was under the impression that you couldn't load new assets into the game and that while a strong builder program everything still looked kinda generic.
Brilliant, and serves as the perfect advert for the software. Very tempted to give this a go.
Better rebuild your star fox clone Nintendolife
I"ve been thinking about buying Dreams on PS4 to see what I can make. Now I'm kind of torn between Dreams and GBG. Anybody have any input?
@JasmineDragon dreams is more powerful than GBG , with alot more tools at your disposal watch some videos online and see which one looks more fun to you
I justt tried this out myself, mostly because I wanted to get a look at the 'code' screen I'm not sure I could ever do something like this. But I am enjoying GBG from a novices perspective.
Very interested to see what can be done with it once people have more experience. Interesting results from day 2 though.
@Roxas_ Well, technically you can combine rectangular cuboids, spheres and cylinders to create more complex 3D objects. Easy to do some simple trees, pipes etc for example.
Animating those is a bit tricky, though.
Can’t wait for someone to make game builder garage inside game builder garage.
NINJA APPROVED
@KoopaTheGamer Is that how they made the dog in the "Nintendogs" one that was linked to up there? That one looks pretty incredible to me, especially, as it had the dog character responding to the "owner" of the camera. The others are all fascinating as well, for basically only being out a VERY short time, and getting that level of complexity already. I can't imagine where it can go from there! I think the biggest limitation is going to be on exactly how big of a design you can get to.
http://mygarage.games/ has a repository.
So this thing has been somehow deployed to the app and configured to make It work or was built up from the up (I understand sprites can be uploaded) Anyway, that's a great idea of time and resource. Excellent!
Let the shovelware commence 😅
But I still love it
@Guitario My games will have tons of micro transactions! 😉
Now someone make Doom on it
How… this is amazing!
@KoopaTheGamer but in dreams you can create and fully rig any 3D models you can't do that in GBG , dreams is more powerful than this game by far, but it's still a great game and entry point regardless
It'd be cool if labo worked with this game
Ok, who's gonna make the Metroid Prime 4 demo?
@Tandy255 haha
Well I watched all of the recreations this article links to, and I must say I am both impressed and terrified
@GrailUK Exactly what I was going to say.
Perception: I can recreate the full Ocarina of Time on this!
Reality: It took me a month, but I can recreate the first screen of Zelda I where you enter the cave. Hoping to finish the cave with the old man and Link picking up the wooden sword by 2022
@JasmineDragon I can 100% speak for Dreams!
It absolutely has all you need to make a 3D game prototype, and the ceiling for what you can achieve is much higher than GBG. However with that level of ambition, it's important to keep your ambitions in check. You can do a lot with the art/modelling in Dreams but that also means you can sink in a lot of time before you finish your project. If you go for Dreams, just don't dream bigger than you can handle and you should be fine. Keep it to small projects like GBG.
@JuiceMan_V sure, also Crysis.
Woah it seems this game is more comprehensive than i thought. And from the initial announcement i thought you couldnt actually share games except over local wifi. I might need to go pick up this game. As someone who is just starting to get into game dev right now this could
maybe even be a fun protoyping tool!
Now we can say "Consumers does what Nintendon't".
Whoa, that music! Why didn't the review say anything about the absolute BANGERS featured in that game?
Neat! With a few more creations like this, I may end up picking this up!
Maybe they will make Metroid Prime 4!
The game looks decent. Here's hoping they continue to update it with much needed new features. Something as basic as a more robust sprite creation and animation suite and a MIDI piano roll with twelve channels per track would go a long way.
@bimboliquido you can draw them. if you are a good artist you can draw any character you want to be in the game.
@JuiceMan_V
Forza Horizon 5 for Xbox was made in Game Builder Garage.
@BloodNinja thank you for this 😂
@Ks123 Just doing my job
@TheDavyStar @Roxas_ Thanks for the comments. I am leaning towards Dreams as it seems like it has more under the hood. I probably won't make anything at all complicated or demanding, but I like to have all the options.
So there’s more customization options than mentioned on the review?
I’d love to see something like” link to the past “ on this.
That is pretty cool
@JuiceMan_V too much kool aid. Dreams was much more useful on a much more powerful system, and even then it couldn't do that level of detail.
The best "game creation" game is available for free on PC : unreal engine. You know, a thing thats made to create actual games (including Nintendos).
@octokid I think there is xD
https://mygarage.games/game/890
I don't have the time to be creative anymore. Mario Maker was the last time I poured time and effort into creating.
But I love seeing other people's stuff. It never ceases to amaze me.
@JaxonH I'll never understand who DOES have time to be creative. People say "kids", but aren't kids overloaded with school work and 1000 after school and club activities these days?
Halo Infinite when?
@NEStalgia These are likely adults doing this, who's saying kids? Tons of people work from home now and on top of that, some people smart enough to code rarely leave their house, which gives them plenty of time to do all this.
Not everyone is wired to have a large social network of friends or family they are constantly doing things with. Plenty of introverts would have time for this.
@Kilroy As a bona-fide introvert....I don't even have slightly enough time to be creative! Even hermits are too busy with a lot of things to do in the real world!
@NEStalgia Ha ha, yeah, but it's all about what makes you busy!
