Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for the week ending 30th May, revealing that Miitopia has managed to grab that elusive number one at the second time of asking
The quirky, Mii-based RPG lost out to Rune Factory 5 in its debut week last week, but has now managed to jump up a place thanks to a decent second week on the market. It also managed to fend off competition from new PS4 release, Biomutant, the only newcomer to this week's top ten.
Switch took eight of the top ten places this time around, with plenty of familiar faces dotted around the list.
Here are the top ten (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):
- [NSW] Miitopia (Nintendo, 05/21/21) – 34,451 (107,176)
- [PS4] Biomutant (THQ Nordic, 05/25/21) – 24,596 (New)
- [NSW] Monster Hunter Rise (Capcom, 03/26/21) – 23,932 (2,225,801)

- [PS4] Resident Evil Village (Capcom, 05/08/21) – 10,584 (173,132)
- [NSW] Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban! (Konami, 11/19/20) – 10,290 (2,202,018)
- [NSW] Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (Nintendo, 04/28/17) – 8,665 (3,852,865)
- [NSW] Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury (Nintendo, 02/12/21) – 8,587 (757,936)
The hardware charts confirm yesterday's news that the Switch family of systems has now surpassed 20 million sales in Japan. Here are this week's figures, followed by lifetime sales in brackets:
- Switch – 49,090 (16,168,420)
- PlayStation 5 – 33,566 (652,565)
- Switch Lite – 22,058 (3,849,858)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – 5,758 (129,485)

Wow, good sales for Sony.
@Lando_
Might be due to the PlayStation game discounts.
At least Resident Evil Village ain't alone anymore up there, still Monster Hunter Rise is going strong and Miitopia should be gone from the chart once E3 is over.
Long live Nintendo
I think this is the first time I haven't seen Animal Crossing in the top 10
@Axecon It's the fourth week in a row it hasn't broken the top ten, I believe. Guess everyone already owns it by now, haha.
@chapu2006 I think they must have had a big shipment of PS5s. The PS5 is impossible to find in Japan and highly sought after.
What are the PS5 owners buying? Digital content maybe?
@Slowdive
I know I was just thinking cheaper games might result in more sales of the console with those games.
this is no surprise.Nintendo owns Japan. the system and games just keep on rocking. and the reason they but ps5 systems and not games is Sony fans do not want ps5 games. they just want their ps4 games to look better.
Switch sales are lower this time, are people smelling the imminent reveal of a switch revision and are holding for it?
44k for the new Xbox looks pretty solid compared to last gen. Absolutely impressed with Nintendo just crushing it!
Incoming Tomodachi Life port in 3... 2...
Miitopia doing well there especially to get up into 1st place.
Oh man Resident Evil used to be a million seller in Japan. What a downfall for the series.
@Paraka I really hope so. I didn't own a 3DS but I am seriously enjoying Miitopia on Switch and I have heard great things about Tomodachi Life. Plus, the speculation around Warioware is getting me really excited about casual gaming prospects coming to Switch. Up to now I've only really engaged with ACNH and Pokemon.
@Absol - Honestly, with how popular Miitopia is this time around (not to mention the memes adding to the desire), it would be more shocking that they wouldn't port it. Using that new Mii customization for one game when it could easily sell two (and they're ports at that)? Be leaving money on the table, and that's a serious statement from me.
And I think they should period. Their ports are like Kickstarter campaigns without the empty promises. "Help us fund a new Mario, in turn, get This Port."
Great to see monster hunter rise ticking along nicely!
Not long til 8 million global.......
Curious to see if this becomes the best selling monster hunter in Japan. My guess is it will get close to 5mil in Japan alone.
@tntswitchfan68 may have something to do with the fact that 65% of Sony's game sales are digital now and climbing. Oh and that nearly a 5th of sales are the digital console. Nice generalisation on what ps5 owners want, must be nice to be such a guru on a platform you obviously don't like! Me personally I can't wait to play R&C next week.
Anyway another good week for the switch, I look forward to the direct that's coming. Hopefully we'll get some exciting news of some great new games that I might want to actually buy.
@BenAV Animal Crossing New Horizons need a big update to have a huge increase in sales(all 2021 updates so far have been so lackluster so far)
Can't wait to see what Switch Pro (Super Switch) does to Japan 😂
Should be interesting to say the least....
@Giancarlothomaz 2021 is not even a lacklustre year for Nintendo it's a really good year for Nintendo and the switch as a whole other then animal crossing
Monster hunter should not have been at that list. What a pointless game. I regret the buy back on wii u still. Never again. Looks awfull and are just like playing a game on repeat over and over again. like a child that looks at a movie 500 times and still thinks it's super fun🤦♂️ what are people thinking? Show some support if you shear my thoughts? 👍 Otherwise keep it to your self. Nobody is interested in your opinion.
@Serialsid Yeah, Mario 3D World has new QOL improvements with Bowser's Fury. Link's Awakening has QOL and a new mode. PS5 has nothing right now. R and C is not a game.I am excited about.
@Lord what is great with monster hunter?
@PuppyToucher I hope it's not
@Ghost_of_Hasashi monster hunter will fall of the list soon. I really hope so.
@tntswitchfan68 it has plenty to play, Returnal is one of the best games I've played in ages. Plus the 18 games they have given us on psplus since the start of the year. What has Nintendo online given me??? And who cares if R&C doesn't excite you? Game looks bloody brilliant. I reckon if it was coming to switch you'd play a different tune.
@Serialsid Returnal is a buggy mess. Demon Souls was a clunky remake. Nintendo's Online needs work, but at least it doesn't crash on a monthly basis like Sony's. Plenty to play? Hardly.
@tntswitchfan68 returnal 23 hours played and only one tiny bug. Demon Souls massively rated(though not my style of game). Sackboy was brilliant, as was spiderman MM. Astro a great time. Tons of 3rd party games plus all the ps plus games.
Nintendo online needs value, its a joke.
@Serialsid Spider-Man is on PS4. Demon Souls sucked. Regardless of what the media thinks. Sackboy? OK, that was OK. But, not worth 500 bucks to get a system for. If you say so. Everyone else talks about the bugs, but meraciously, you get one. Suuurrre I believe you.
@Serialsid 20 bucks a year for 100 games, discounts and free game trials. You were saying?
@tntswitchfan68 MM played better on ps5, as do most of the ps4 games. The switch launched with a wii u game as its big seller, and played almost identical! Demon Souls, a 92 on metacritic with 99 reviews! Mmmmm 🤔 what a terrible game. And with returnal, why would I lie? I've had 1 bug, I've read some people get them and some don't. Doesn't stop the fact that it's is one of the most immersive games ever made. Especially with the dualsense and 3d audio.
@tntswitchfan68 £31 for family online. A 100 games that are mostly shovelware. You play for a few minutes and never again. Crap discounts and oh wow, game trials! It's pathetic! An absolute joke of a service.
I've never paid more than £36 for plus. So far this year I've had 18 games, proper games like Control AE, tomb raider, FF 7 remake, Destruction Allstars, days gone, maneater(how much on switch? ) concrete genie, battlefield 5, wreckfest, and brand new games like Oddworld, operation tango and the virtua fighter 5 remake. That's value. Oh and discounts too.
@Serialsid Shovelware? Link to the Past, Mario World? Super Metroid? Hardly. Also, it is 20 bucks for a person and again, Sony's has slower speeds than Microsoft and they crash almost monthly.
@Serialsid so? It isn't worth 500 bucks for that and the higher price for the same game.
@tntswitchfan68 yes most of it is complete shovelware. A few classics but they haven't aged well for the most part. It's £31 for a family so they can all play online like you get with plus. Sony are now using Microsoft azure cloud services, so er.... the same speeds! And crash monthly? Bless you your getting desperate now.
You want to talk about slow, I remember how excited my boys were to play Mario maker 2 online against other people. Was an absolute slide show. I had to tell them Nintendo use a system called NEX that is 20 years old and is basically slow. I know they are going to another system this year, finally.
Oh and let's not forget the psplus collection you get with plus for the ps5, 20 great games from the ps4 era. More value!
@tntswitchfan68 yes, yes it was worth every penny. And if the games are as good quality as returnal and what R&C looks like it's going to be, I'll quite happily pay £70. And the games keep coming out supporting the dualsense and its features(which nearly every 3rd party game has done so far). The controller alone was worth the upgrade.
Now my series x on the other hand, that was not worth the money so far. Should have stuck with my one x until they actually had some games that can use it.
@Serialsid Returns? The night mess? Keep trying to convince yourself that. Sony is charging 70 bucks for a higher frame rate and resolution? You can get games that run better than PS5 games, and you can get those for 10 to 20 bucks less.
@Serialsid Na. Most are classics. Also, let's not forget the crashes, horrible return policy and had connections.
@tntswitchfan68 who cares about returns? I buy nearly all my games physical and part ex when finished. That's your best, returns? Makes me laugh when you just think that next gen games are going to be about resolution and frame rates. It's going to be about assets on screen, better AI, more destruction, world's that feel more alive and packed (watch the R&C city play through, a world dense with life). The IO through put of the ps5 is insane, it can put 2GB into memory from the ssd in 0.27 seconds. It doesn't have to render what's behind you until you turn. That means they can make games and worlds that were impossible before. Developers are saying they are going to be able to make games on the series x and ps5 that they could only dream of. Exciting times to be a gamer.
I love my switch and some of the games but you seem to think Sony are the only bad guys when Nintendo have some very crappy practices themselves. Full price for bare minimum ports. Porting a game and then putting a quality of life feature behind a pay wall (amibo). Striking down loads of YouTube content creators over the years. Charging for a basic and very slow online. Selling a faulty product like the joy cons for over 4 years, basically admitting they are defective and still selling them anyway.
@Serialsid the PS 5 and 4 controllers drifted. The PS5 buttons break. Also, Sony has been taken to court for their return policy. And, the president of Sony has said the PC version of Horizon is better. Why should I be duped into paying 10 bucks more for the inferior version?
If blind loyalists want to get duped, that is on them. Not me. Sony does so much wrong, but unlike Nintendo who rightfully gets called out on it. Over loyal Sony fans ignore it. Which is not a good thing.
@tntswitchfan68 I never had one ps4 controller break or drift. I've had to repair two joy cons already and another is now starting to drift. We'll see on the dualsense, both mine are perfect at the moment. Of course the pc version is better than the ps4 game, much much better hardware. But it came out years after it came out on ps4. They've just given it away for free to any ps4 owner, pc has to pay full price! I'm glad pc gamers get to play these great games a few years after they release, gets the brand out there.
I think you must live in a bubble. On push Square the comments are full of fans/ players criticising Sony and their practice's. A hell of a lot more than I see on this site. They do a lot of things wrong and do get called out for it, especially by the gaming media.
But at the end of the day I don't care what any of the 3 billion dollar companies do(they all only care about the bottom line, they are not your friend). I have no loyalty to any of them, I just want to play the best games whichever system they release on. And doesn't matter how much you try and deny it, some of the best games ever made in the last 10 years have been on the PlayStation and switch.
@Serialsid I have and so has my friend. PS5 are breaking and drifting at a huge rate. I blame Nintendo SONY and Microsoft for using this company that uses these analog sticks that give out Over time. Just because it never happened to you, that does not mean it does not happen.
TBH, the only games on the PS 4 I liked were Horizon, Bloodborne and Gravity Rush.
@tntswitchfan68 Breaking consoles and drifting at a huge rate? How huge? Proof? Probably 10 million in the wild now, surely if its in the hundreds of thousands there should be evidence? And about 20 million controllers! And I'm not talking about a few thousand, that's expected with the launch of a new product.
I agree on the sticks they are all using, they are not designed very well and the industry needs to look into having a much more durable system and better standards. Hell my mate went through 3 xbox elite controllers that just kept falling apart and they are not cheap.
Anyway I'm sure we will have another discussion another time in the future. You obviously love Nintendo and have some weird hate for Sony. Me, I'm just going to enjoy whatever future games come out on all three systems. Let's hope E3 gives us some good surprises.
@Serialsid I got some articles to show. Sony has their problems right now. Ignoring them will not help the situation.
You love Sony, which is fine, but you seem to defend them at every turn, whereas Nintendo, you will criticize. Try being critical of both of them.
I am not saying you cannot like Sony, of course not. I am tired of fans letting Sony get away with so much. That is what I have against Sony. That, and most of their games have turned into glorified movies and get praised for generic gameplay. I will say, Sackboy is original, and Bloodborne is an incredible game. Their indie-style games I like. Dreams and Concrete Genie are very good. Too bad they do not do well.
So, you do you, but I will call put Sony and the people who let them get away with too much.

@tntswitchfan68 I criticise Sony when they do things wrong, as do most fans. Again you should look at push Square, there are a lot of unhappy people after the whole "we believe in generations" fiasco. Quite a few forums are full of fans not happy with the way Sony communicate with the players and some of the decisions they are making.
But on Nintendo life you get loads of people who think the sun shines out of Nintendos butt. Any sort of negativity is soon shot down. And I find it funny how you constantly go on and on about how amazing Nintendo is and how they have the bestest games ever! And that the ps5 has none, which is complete rubbish. Your the fan boy. Your the one constantly attacking Sony every chance you get, even when the article has nothing to do with them. I really don't care for Sony as a company, I just love the games they produce and the quality. If you honestly think that the last god of War or Ghost of tsushima (my game of the year) are glorified movies then 🤷, both had some of the best game play of the last generation.
And that's not proof HUGE numbers are failing, that's just a very small percentage that you get with any new product. 20 plus million controllers, where are the stories of HUGE numbers drifting? Its common sense any new controller that's using the same sticks as all the rest will have drift issues. I've took apart my joy cons, and they have a major design flaw. But Nintendo doesn't care, they just keep pumping out shiny new controllers and people get all excited and must have them. Be interesting to see if the EU commission launches the investigation they are deciding on. That after 4 years Nintendo are still selling a known faulty product. Let's see you call out Nintendo? Did you call out Nintendo when they put a quality of life improvement on the soon to release zelda game behind a £25 pay wall? You call them out when they starting charging for online when they were using pathetic and slow servers? You call them out for some very basic and lazy ports and then charging full price for? Sometimes for more than they originally sold for? This at a time when MS are boosting a lot of old games for free? How they are getting more and more greedy and anticonsumer, their mobile games having gold passes that are more than the online services and packed with mircotransations? The infamous 2015 creators program and the back lash they received? The update that added Google Analytics integration into the eshop that would collect user data, which Nintendo remained silent about? Its on by default in the US.
Both companies are greedy, both companies have faults. But at the end of the day it's just gaming, you buy what you like and play what you like. Least we get choice.
@Serialsid Wow. Swing and a miss. You obviously do not look at topics on new ports at 60 bucks, online games being announced and anytime Metroid Prime 4 or Bait 3 is not shown. That is all there is, is criricism. Sony fans are not like that. They will worship Sony no matter what.
@tntswitchfan68 sorry but it's not much criticism, and it's soon drowned out by the Nintendo loyal fan boys like yourself who just make up any excuse for them. Who cares about joy con drift when they release such pretty colours!
Ha ha, your the one missing. Just the other day there was an article criticising Sony and the believe in generations fiasco, and most were not happy. A lot voted they were lied too. Forums all over the Internet were full of angry Sony fans. Many were not happy about what happened to Sony Japan studios. And about how games that were on ps now then coming to psplus.
People on push Square are very critical of some of the things Sony do. You obviously don't see it because your on this site. What you don't see on push Square is people putting down Nintendo, or mentioning them at all really. Not like on here where people like yourself constantly feel the need to attack Sony with very weak arguments, sometimes being completely out of context to the article. Just the other day someone called you out why you were going on a Sony rant from an article that didn't even mention them. I do find it quite amusing why you care so much what Sony does? You obviously don't like them. You don't like their games. You don't like their hardware. So why do you give a dam how they conduct themselves? Just enjoy being a Nintendo fan boy and let Sony self destruct. I don't defend Sony because I worship them, I just call out BS from people like yourself who seem to have a need to sprout negative opinions with no real facts, just a very warped mindset.
I'll say it again, all 3 companies are out to make as much money as they possibly can, that's all they care about. They ALL have bad practices.
@Serialsid Yeah it is, and all you have done is made excuses for Sony. Sorry, but you have. And no, not all of them have the same amount of bad practices. Nintendo treats all their employees waaaaaaay better than Sony, Nintendo is more developer friendly, Nintendo is more diverse friendly and Nintendo is not censoring games left and right. I know you will come back with what they do wrong and try to make excuses for what Sony does, so I will be waiting to debunk your nonsense. See you soon.
@tntswitchfan68 Nintendo more developer friendly? Now I know your smoking something. Just read the article from house marque about how encouraging Sony were to them. And I take it you work for Nintendo then? To have all this insider knowledge about how they treat all their employees?
And thank you again for proving today where your head is at. An article on this site asking if Nintendo has lost its weirdness ( me personally I don't think so, Labo, ring fit adventure, the new garage game) and off you go on another of your Sony rants. It was an opinion piece for a bit of debate. But we can't have that, let's get another dig in at Sony. Truly sad and quite funny that sony is living in your head so much.
Anyway I'm wasting my time. You carry on with your Sony crusade, on a Nintendo fan site where your all nice and safe in your little echo chamber. Take care now.
@Serialsid Actually, that is the truth. Nintendo did not used to be. Not for a long time, but in the past 4 years, that has changed. Smoking something? No, I do not drink the Sony look-aid. That is on you. Sony hasn't been developer friendly since the PS3 days. You just choose to ignore it. Also, insulting me doesn't do anything but prove my point how blindly loyal you are to Sony. How you ignore the problems they have and how much you don't know how much Nintendo has changed. Grow up. The truth hurts, don't like it? Too bad. Go back to sticking your head in the sand over Sony.
Also, talk to current and former employees, they have high praise for Nintendo. That is why Monolith Soft joined them. Talk to the young lady who Sony fired just because she called them out for their mistreatment of her. Go back to Push Square, where you will be in a safe place and ignore Sony's bad behavior. Make all the excuses you want.
@tntswitchfan68 what truth? You haven't said any truth! You just sprout bs about ps5 having no games, completely untrue, Sony doesn't do indies anymore, untrue, Sony don't care about Japan anymore, again untrue, they just chose to put more of their business behind the areas that it succeeds in. Sony only makes movie games, again untrue.
Mmmm I wonder what the ex Nintendo developer was saying the other day about Nintendo since Satoru Iwata sadly died? That they are are more focused on money now and have changed for the worse.
I haven't made any excuses for Sony, just laugh and the silly things that come out of your head. I have yet to see you say anything bad about Nintendo.
I don't care about sonys bad behaviour, couldn't care less. I just want to play their games. I think MS are a horrible company but as long as they keep making gamepass great value I don't care.
I don't need a safe place, that's for people who go on and on and on and on about a company that they don't like on a site that's geared towards a rival company.
I go on this site because I'm a fan of Nintendos games, I like to read about what's happening with them. I think I've given Nintendo enough of my money over the many years I've been gaming to have an opinion.
I look forward to tomorrow when there's another article about Nintendo and you somehow manage to get another pathetic dig in about Sony. I'm sure some of the others on the site will heart it and you'll feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
@Serialsid Yeah he has. He even posted articles proving his point, but you wanted to deflect and ignore it. Sony has drift problems too, they are ignoring indies, they censor games, they charge more for development, and I could go on. The fact you get so defensive after telling someone you were done, only to come back (that is lying), shows what he is saying bothers you. As he said, the truth hurts. Radical Sony fans can't handle the truth. It doesn't help when all you do is complain about Nintendo, but make excuses for Sony's bad business practices.
Why does it bother you when someone criticizes Sony? Big deal. You can't take criticizing Sony for some reason.
@michellelynn0976 they have several indie games coming out this year. They're sponsoring an indie development hub in Japan. They just released a video just about indies.
I have no problem people criticising Sony. And if I was on push Square and people were talking rubbish about Nintendo I world call them out.
So they sensor a few games. Nintendo have been sensoring people on YouTube and striking their videos for years.
I have been positive about Nintendo lots of times. I love some of their IPs, some of the best games ever made. I just don't put my head in the sand and say nothing bad about one company whilst constantly going on about another.
@Serialsid Having some indies doesn't mean they care about them. The devs themselves are complaining about Sony's lack of support for indie devs. You do make excuses for them and you keep showing it. Sony has dropped a lot as a company.
@michellelynn0976 I'm not saying they haven't, but so have Nintendo. I do criticise Sony on push Square, what I don't do is constantly try and put Nintendo into the argument in some weird deflection. Nintendo are hardly ever mentioned on there, and If they are it's in a good light. Both companies have many faults. I've seen a change in Nintendo this last few years that I don't like, trying to squeeze as much money out of their loyal fan base as possible.
Anyway all this is getting pretty pointless, you have your opinions and I have mine.
Oh and I just looked, out of the 21 games on the last Nintendo indie direct, 14 possibly 15 are either already on ps4 or coming to it. All those indie developers must have missed the memo about the evil Sony empire!
@Serialsid No, Nintendo is embracing indie devs now. Also, I know Nintendo has made some bad decisions. Running their online on 20-year-old tech? Yeah, not a good idea. But, you all do make excuses for Sony. Which isn't a good thing. Hold them to the same standard and be honest.
The PS5, not PS4. See what I mean? Look at how defensive you get.
@michellelynn0976 you honestly expect indies that have been in development for a long time that are multi plat to be just for the ps5 already? Really? Plus the ps5 will play them via back compat so they are for that system too. Why would indie developers waste their time when they wouldn't use or need the power of the hardware? Now who's not being honest?
The pathless, bugsnax, oddworld, kena Bridge of spirits, Jett, stray, disco elysium, operation tango, chicory, Nour, where the heart leads, puzzling places, heavenly bodies all coming to ps5 this year. Seems like Sony are embracing indies too!
I hold Sony to the same Standard as I do Nintendo. Shame others on here don't seem to be able to.
@Serialsid OK I will take your word. But, I haven't seen you do it. Of course, Nintendo masses up, but they have gotten better with indie devs and 3rd party games. I am worried about Jim Ryan. Sony is turning into Nintendo from the late 90s to the middle of 2010s. I think Sony needs new people.
@Serialsid I do not see you hold them both to the same standard.
@tntswitchfan68 I don't see you hold Nintendo to any kind of standard.
@Serialsid That is a lie. I do not see you hold Sony to any standard.
