UK physical chart data is in for the week ending 1st May, and perhaps unsurprisingly New Pokémon Snap has taken top spot. Perhaps the most notable comparisons (thanks, GamesIndustry.biz) is that it sold four times more copies than the original (which doesn't even count the new game's download figures) and 2.5 times the copies of 2020 title Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. It also saw off the other big release of last week, Returnal on PS5.
The game joins four other Switch exclusives in the top ten, all of which aside from Animal Crossing: New Horizons actually saw an increase in sales; it's also the Switch version of Minecraft that continues to perform best. Last week's top game, Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139, actually fell all the way down to 22nd after a 78% drop in sales.
Here's a look at the most top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
- | 1 | New Pokemon Snap |
- | 2 | Returnal |
3 | 3 | Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury |
5 | 4 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
4 | 5 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
2 | 6 |
FIFA 21 |
6 | 7 | Minecraft (Switch) |
8 | 7 | Grand Theft Auto 5 |
9 | 9 | Ring Fit Adventure |
12 | 10 | Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War |

Remember 4 years ago when new Nintendo games rarely made it to even 10th place here in the UK? Now Nintendo is dominating the UK.
Who is still buying Grand Theft Auto V?
Is there a British Scott the Woz who's buying multiple copies for a video gag or something?
Can't wait to see how RE8 will do on those charts
Pokemon snap won't have the staying power of the main games though
Praise to returnal though, 2nd and it's on a machine thats only sold around 8 million worldwide and its a very niche game in terms of its gameplay
@UltimateOtaku91 And costs 70 quids
@StinkyHat
Granted that four years ago were the Wii U dark ages, coming to an end.
I am so glad that 3D World seems to be selling well, getting the recognition it finally deserves. That really is a brilliant game, and I way prefer the Switch version to the original WiiU one.
I wonder if Super Mario Party may have a little resurgence now it has online play? (which is WELL worth playing if anyone hasn't tried it out yet!!)
@Zuljaras I'd be very surprised if it's not 1st next week.
@UltimateOtaku91 I think it's probably got more to do with the fact they have very little to buy for their new machines.
@Guybrush20X6 Well, probably kids who grew up and are now able to buy the game
@Max_the_German
glad it did well BUT this is just going to make publishers think we can sell games at £70 so more and more will up there prices
some ways i wish it had sold poorly and sony would get the hint people will not pay it, but it doesn't look that way.
@UltimateOtaku91 @Max_the_German As @suikoden says, PS5 owners have spent £500-1000 on their new console. It's filling every spare inch of their living room. They needed a game to justify something so gargantuan.
finally a game from the PS5 or Xbox in the top 10. Only took 5 or 6 months.
game of thrones music " shame shame shame".
Well what do you know? Reviving old beloved spin offs sell better than just doing more sequels to Mystery Dungeon and Rumble!
@suikoden I paid £62 for returnal and don't regret it for a second. Amazing game with brilliant atmosphere. I've played 15 hours and I'm still only in the 2nd area. So I believe I'm getting my monies worth. I paid £50 for kirby a few years ago and my boy beat it in less than 6 hours, that was definitely not worth the money. Nintendo keeps releasing old games that are slightly spruced up and charge £50. This is a game built from the ground up over 4 years. Am I happy about the price going up? No. But at least we all get to choose whether it's worth it or not.
Biggest UK retail launches of 2021 thus far:
1) Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury: ~56,000
2) Monster Hunter Rise: ~30,000
3) New Pokemon Snap: ~26,000
Unless I'm missing something, I'm pretty sure New Pokemon Snap had the biggest UK launch ever for a Pokemon spin-off. Impressive numbers indeed.
@Guybrush20X6 I'm working at a game store (in Hungary, though), and GTA5 is probably still our best selling game. Sure, when something big comes out, it might take over for a few days or weeks, but GTA5 is consistently a best seller. We probably sold more copies of GTA5 for the X360 last year than copies of The Last of Us Part II or something.
@westman98 And it's well earned. I haven't finished it yet, but it's easily one of the very best Pokémon spinoffs ever, and probably the best looking game in the entire series.
Wholly deserved! I've completed the main story but still have so much pictures to take. It has truly rekindled my love for Pokémon. The way I would've applauded a dex cut for SWSH if it meant models and animations like this.
@westman98 is that just for Nintendo releases or has it been a slow year for Sony and Microsoft so far?
It’s a lovely game, really glad to see it doing well. I already want another sequel!
Also as others have said, impressive results from Returnal there too!
I buy it when the Labo VR Camera update comes.
@suikoden it may have came second which seems good, but from the information out there it wasn’t even close between first and second. So make of that what you will.
good, this game rips. every time i play it, i see something new and surprising. hand the mainline games off to bandai namco already, they really know how to handle this franchise
@Outerdragon I'd make of it, one is a massive franchise on a system with a huge install base. The other is a new IP launching on a just released system.
Great to see Pokemon snap selling so well and without any of the backlash that SWSH got. Hopefully Nintendo take notice of the positive sales and overall response and keep this game going with substantial updates and sequels. So much lore to tap in to that they could just keep expanding.
@Serialsid I get it’s a massive franchise, but Pokémon Snap was never a massive hit so the fact it’s down this well is amazing. As for returnal, going by the sale figures it’s not off o the best of starts, and I can’t see it selling even more when more ps5s come in stock. Plus I’ve had a ps5 since launch, and this so far is the only game that’s been a must have for it so why didn’t more people who had the console buy it? See how both hold next week that could be more telling.
@Otoemetry
That's for all releases thus far.
Resident Evil Village will challenge Mario 3D World's launch sales when it releases.
@Outerdragon these are only physical sales, and according to Sony's latest figures from the last financial year 65% of their sales are now digital. So who really knows the sales figures for either game. Pokemon was always going to be number 1, it will be a massive seller for Nintendo, and by the reviews it deserves it. Returnal is a very niche game so I'm surprised it did so well(I'm personally loving it). And I've read a lot of people won't buy it because of the price tag. Anyway it's nice to see some new games in the top 10.
@westman98 huh, I'm fairly shocked by the low numbers tbh. I suppose I shouldn't expect huge numbers for MonHun in the UK but the other two I would have thought they'd have sold loads more than that, perhaps our current economical woes are starting to bite.
@Otoemetry
Those are really good number for both Mario 3D World and New Pokemon Snap.
@westman98 I defer to your greater knowledge, they just seemed low to me. Do you know what the biggest launches were last year?
@Otoemetry
1) FIFA 21: ~334,000 (~207,000 PS4 + ~120,000 XBO + ~7,000 NSW)
2) The Last of Us Part II: ~194,000
3) Assassin's Creed Valhalla: ~148,000 (~63,000 PS4 + ~60,000 Xbox + ~27,000 PS5)
4) Animal Crossing New Horizons: ~138,000
5) COD Black Ops Cold War: ~130,000 (~51,000 PS4 + ~45,000 XBO + ~22,000 PS5 + ~12,000 XBS)
Every other 2020 game sold well below 100,000 retail copies at launch.
@westman98 wow no wonder EA pumps out a new FIFA every year when it sells like that. This is the kind of list I would have expected to see 3D World on, do you think the fact it was a port held it back somewhat? Mind you I've no idea what flagship Mario games usually sell at launch in the UK, all of this is kind of shattering my worldview when it comes to how well Nintendo games sell here in the UK 😅
@Otoemetry
Fastest-selling Mario platformer in the UK is Super Mario Odyssey, which sold ~85,000 retail copies at launch. Super Mario 3D All-Stars comes in at a very close second.
@westman98 Very interesting! Thanks for bringing all the figures all the time 😁
@Otoemetry you know it was in 2 days???
