Star Wars: Republic Commando is a great game, but last month's release on Nintendo Switch didn't go down so well.
Players noticed some serious frame rate issues and various other bugs that probably shouldn't have been there in the first place. Fortunately, Aspyr seems to be getting the situation under control - with the developer announcing Patch 1.0.2 is now available for the Nintendo version of the game.
It focuses on improving the frame rate and performance, and also includes some bug fixes. Here's the full rundown:
Patch 1.0.2 - 20th May 2021
- Performance Optimizations
- There were a handful of areas in which the frame rate was lower than expected, most noticeable early in the first level. There were also areas in which the frame rate itself wasn’t impacted, but that the gameplay experience didn’t match. It was important for us to address both, so development went through the game adding additional optimizations. One of these optimizations included adjusting how the game was handling audio, to free up more system resources for performance.
- This had the added benefit of not just improving performance in the areas where it was either low or felt low, but improved the overall performance throughout the entire game.
- Resolved Issues When Rebinding Keys
- We resolved some bugs that were causing the game to not display the proper button prompts or register that specific buttons on the JoyCon were being pressed.

I passed on LRG's release since it didn't seem like the patch would be ready in time... I really regret that decision now. Although without gyro, I guess there's not much point in getting it on Switch, anyway.
Nice, I've been waiting for this patch. I just checked like last night to see if there was one.
Edit: There still seem to be some small hitches, but it's a pretty massive improvement from before.
Who needs PS5 and Xbox Series X upgrade patches when you can have patches to make games finally playable?
Performance updates are a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural.
Glad they did it though. Ideally it would have been there from the get go, but life’s not ideal.
Yes! I've been waiting for this patch! I'll be buying the game ASAP now.
Cool i just bought this not two days ago! This will be my first time playing it too. Hope its as good as I hear. Guess I'll get started on it!
I checked out a framerate test video with the new patch and it still runs poorly at certain spots. Disappointing.
I played this game for a good 4-5 hours and honestly never noticed anything wrong at all, but I'm not gonna complain about an update!
@uhhhhhhhh
Some people ain't happy unless it's perfect. Maybe it did need a patch but this is a 16 year old game. What were they expecting? If it was a brand new game i wouldn't be as meh about it. Standards are higher today.
I'm very disappointed in this game nonetheless. They should've prioritized the Switch when porting this game, because it feels like a downgrade from the PS4 version rather than an upgrade from the original version. 30fps sounds very inexcusable for a case like this.
@Zeldafan79 It's not crazy to expect a sixteen year old game to run smoothly on much newer hardware.
After the update performance felt much worse to me. My current save is in the middle of a pretty intense battle and I was experiencing skipping and inconsistent performance that wasn’t there before.
@Indielink
Yes but if you're even thinking about buying an old game odds are you already have nostalgia for it and liked it as originally released bugs, lower framerate and all.
@Indielink What people don't consider is the ancient engines and code that these old games run on. Just because it's old doesn't mean it instantly will run perfect on new hardware. Look at Nocturne. PC players complaining it's locked to 30fps on PC, not realizing the game was created around Sony's emotion processor, and that the gameplay ties directly to the frame rate (same with Dark Souls 2 when it came to PC, weapons were breaking 2x faster due to the doubled frame rate). Can these issues be fixed? Probably. But no one considers the amount of work it takes to get a 20 year code written for a specific processor to run on modern hardware. Lazy? Maybe. Or maybe not worth the cost to develop.
Keep bringing the Star Wars classics! Rogue Squadron, Bounty Hunter, KotoR, Battlefront, SotE!
Was waiting for gyro support update. Still.....
@E_Gadds_Garage Bringing frame rates back from the dead is Jedi stuff, but maybe the Sith have some evil, selfish way of improving performance...
I still don't understand why this wasn't done before release. But good that they fixed it.
@60frames-please
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Cyberpunk 2077?
It’s not a story the jedi would tell you.
I actually finished it off a few weeks ago & enjoyed it despite it's issues, though I'll be interested in replaying the earlier missions (where the issue was more prominent) to see how it's improved.
