Square Enix has announced it will be shutting down its free-to-play card game Dragon Quest Rivals Ace on 5th July. This will apply to all platforms, including the Nintendo Switch. As of this week, players will no longer be able to purchase Gems in-game.
"Thank you for using "Dragon Quest Rivals Ace" . The service of "Dragon Quest Rivals Ace" will be terminated on July 5, 2021 (Monday) at 13:00"
This digital card game arrived on the scene in 2017 - surpassing 12 million downloads in the first few months - and was eventually ported across to the Switch in 2019. It remains a Japan-only release on the eShop.
In 2020, it received an update and underwent a name change - going from Dragon Quest Rivals to Dragon Quest Rivals Ace.

Ok so....
Why should we care about this considering that most of us are from the West and the game isn’t even available in the West?
Man, that's sad. I was kind of expecting this would make to the west someday
@anoyonmus They need news, and you cared enough to comment on it. I'd say they managed their job.
Yeah guess we don't get it then. Damn.
....And that's what you get for keeping it in Japan. * insert how many times do we have to teach you this lesson old man meme here *
DrAgON qUeSt Is dEaD
Another one bites the dust. And the mobile Kingdom Hearts, too - although to Squeenix's credit there, they're reportedly working on an update that will leave the story cutscenes and even the whole Dark Road content accessible after the service end.
Still, these have been egregiously hi-and-bye years for the mobile freemium market lately, especially in the west. Goes to give me mixed feelings about Valkyrie Crusade also shutting down by summer - on the one hand, it can be bitter to part with a game you attended (if quite casually as of late) for so long... but on the other hand, over 8 years is an age to salute in itself as far as this niche is concerned. Heck, it's one of the precious few freemiums where I can boast having finished the main campaign.😅
Meh never got it here so good riddance.
Literally everything in the video game world is shutting down now.
Nintendo should not let this happen. They are still selling Switches and so this game should be available for everyone to play. Nintendo is taking away everything from us at a time when the Switch is so popular. It is not a consumer-minded company, that's for certain.
@anoyonmus The Switch is region-free; all you need to do is make a Japanese account and you can access its eShop just fine. Some consumers would be okay with dealing with Japanese-only text to play a game they're interested in.
@Minecraft_Master
1) Nobody is buying a switch for Dragon Quest Card Game
2) Nintendo has no say over this. Square Enix made this decision
Welp, one of the few TCG that I liked. The gameplay was pretty easy to understand. I used the Google Translate app to get through the tutorials and some of the card's effects. Sad to see it won't get a west release.
Ok sweet now lets use some of those resources and port DQX to the west LETS GOOOOOOOO
@Minecraft_Master
You are just boring now.
Nooooooo I actually play that! This is why I don’t like to get into games as a service.
@anoyonmus It's more interesting than the "Mario 35/3D All-Stars is gone why would Nintendo do this" article we get like 3 times a week.
Didn't even know it was a thing. Now I'm sad knowing it's going away. Thanks Nintendolife.
TIL there's a Dragon Quest card game
I have nothing positive to say about Squenix's mobile efforts. I've been burned on too many of their F2P efforts, and this just reminds me of their past shortcomings.
Slow news day eh?
I thought someone would have made a wierd comment about "cancel culture" by now. Lol.
Anyway, I was hoping that we would get a Western release as well, as I love me a bit of DQ. Ah well.
