Another title revealed during today's Nintendo Indie World Showcase, Aztech Forgotten Gods is a new "cyberstone colossus fighter" from Mexican studio, Lienzo.
Launching on Switch later this year, the game follows soon-to-be heroine Achtli as she joins her archaeologist mother Nantsin on an unsanctioned dig. While searching for ancient knowledge that could help all of society, they accidentally cause an explosion and awaken stone colossi hellbent on destroying the city.
Your job, then, is to battle huge bosses, run on walls, grind on rails, and more, all of which can be seen taking place in the new trailer above. Here's some PR to set the scene:
InAztech’s alternate history, European powers never arrived on the shores of ancient Mesoamerica. The Aztec Empire’s capital Tenochtitlan has thrived for centuries as a stone metropolis, technologically advanced yet heavily rooted in the ways of those indigenous to the land. Yet the gods of their past, like the feathered serpent deity Quetzalcoatl or Mictlantechutli, Lord of the Underworld, faded into distant memories. Until now.
Explore Tenochtitlan with Achtli’s incredible newfound agility and strength. Encounter optional side stories, unlock new outfits, and upgrade passive abilities by completing secondary challenges in the hub-world. Become the city’s savior with an adrenaline-fueled soundtrack that fuses metal with traditional Aztec instruments. Aztech Forgotten Gods’ emotional journey took inspiration from anime and superhero comics and has a vibrant, Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic to match.
"Lienzo’s proud to be fleshing out a Mexican story with a Mexican team," says Guillermo Vizcaino, lead writer on the game. "There’s such a rich history behind the Aztecs, and merging that with an anime-inspired story gave us the chance to make something really special."
No specific release date has been set just yet, but the game's planned to launch on the eShop later this year. Will you be keeping an eye out for more info on this one?

This looks to be very cool. It does make one wonder what so many civilizations would look like if they persisted to this day with no outside disturbance or invasive colonization. Just give me an alternate universe where Wakanda is real and drop me off please.
Artstyle looks interesting and female protagonist is a plus. I will await further information.
NGL... when I first heard the name I was giddy with excitement for it's potential, and it looks good, but I didn't quite see what I was hoping for from it. Maybe it's in there but just didn't feature in the clip (or I've forgotten it), but I really need overgrown temple exploration.
This game was probably the highlight of the direct for me! It looks really fun and interesting. I hope it ends up being as good as it seems.
This game has 'It's a good game but the Switch version struggles' written all over it.
@Ryu_Niiyama you don't have to wonder. There are several tribes throughout the world like the Sentinelese who've had zero outside disturbance. You're welcome to live there. And Wakanda is a literal impossibility as an isolationist ethnonationalist state.
Looks very cool! Aztec and Mesoamerican mythology in general doesn't get enough attention. I will say though, dealing with certain themes must be really difficult just like with any other mythology. For example, Zeus is a total creep in actual mythology, yet he's always just some big goofy powerful guy in media. In this case, huitzilopochtli is a particularly difficult god to deal with, because he was the patron god of Tenochtitlan. On one hand, not mentioning him would feel wrong for a game that draws from Aztec Mythology, but on the other, you can't really ignore the millions of people that met bloody, disgusting, torturous deaths in sacrifices to him. I suppose the best way to feature him would be as some sort of villain, possibly portrayed as oppressive.
@KiryuJ impossible, but cool to think about. and yeah, learning about undisturbed tribes is crazy. Apparently on certain islands, military operations from WWII and drifting objects in the ocean may have started the spark that pushes the islanders out of the Stone Age because they've discovered metal from the outside world
This looks absolutely frycking phenomenal
When I saw the Aztec imagery in the intro, I was silently hoping that Nihon Falcom was revisiting their Asteka series of games, which came to America as Tombs & Treasure on NES. That game helped inspire a lot of my interest in past civilizations. But Aztech looks pretty awesome and solid.
@GrailUK Yup. Series X (which I barely managed to get my hands on) or PS5 (if it’s even still possible buy one) for me. Unless there is, in fact a Switch Pro coming, this will run terribly on the current Switch. I’m fairly certain, and willing to bet, that trailer was not Switch footage.
Reminds me of Asura's Wrath. Which reminds me that game will be 10 years old next year and I'm still waiting for a remaster or sequel.
Looks cool actually!
@rjejr literally bought asuras wrath on Xbox one on sale the other day for £2.99. bit of a rabbit hole though because a portion of the game is locked behind paid DLC that wasn't on sale so it ended up being a bit over a tenner all in!
Definitely will keep my eye on this one
@KiryuJ I wouldn’t be welcome to live there but thank you for the veiled “get out”. You seem to be a bundle of sunshine.
Oh and Wakanda Forever.
Even Neil Peart (Rush, Totem) confuses
Pre-classic Mayan with the post-classic Aztec. Aztec is in no anthropological /archeological circles the un argued height of proto-Mexico/Central America.
So few know any history...
As pointed out below: Aztecs came along after oxford was well established.

Quetzalcoatl highly recommends!
@ralphdibny Honestly can't recall DLC, either that I purchased or didn't purchase, but I played the game on PS3 on a disc rental from Gamefly so I didn't have it long, just played the main story and sent it back. You did get me excited and I went to check Gamepass but it isn't on there, or on PC. Annnnnndddd I just recalled the PS3 store shutting down and I can't find it on there, or Amazon. Oh what have I done? Sometimes I suppose it's best to let sleeping gods lie.
Its interesting the take of an advanced Aztec civilization, but not really sold in to it (i do not know why) but, as a Mexican i will support these guys, i like my culture being displayed in any form in other countries, let alone a videogame!
@rjejr ahh sorry! Yeah I think it was part of a Capcom publisher sale, I'll be sure to tag you and let you know if I ever see it on sale again. I always liked the look of the game back when it came out but never bought it. I just saw the DLC on the store page and looked it up, aparently there is a "true ending" that takes place in the DLC so I really didn't feel like buying the base game and not getting the full package so I just bought it all anyway. Aparently there's a bit of Street Fighter themed DLC to it as well.
I wish it had a male protagonist, but this game looks really well done.
As a Mexican who loves his culture and with the pride that comes with such a rich pantheon of old gods (wether It's historically accurate or not) i will support this guy's just for the effort of doing something outside the box history-wise (it's safer to got with Nordic, Greek or egiptian mythology) (I haven't even check the trailer) first day buy to me🤘🏻
New game from the devs of mulaka? Im in
@EriXz
Yes! Great point~~~
There are so many of these other Greek etc. based games, it’s surprising how much it gets rehashed. ~~yet they are mostly superficial anyhow as Greek myths, for example loved tragic endings right ?
This game may or may not be in that direction; but even if it’s just the artistic style, that would still be good~~ the Metroid II remake (w/Jose Luis Márquez et al.) added wonderfully to the artistic depth of that series.
~~~everyone: please pardon if previous comment humor was too dry, I was playing a hyper-intellectual snob not “getting” that Aztec isn’t Az-Tech, yeah, Science Girl needs to work on the sillies...
@ralphdibny "true ending"
Might be time for a "let's play". Or at least a YT vid. Feels like 1 of those games that Capcom lets die, it was kinda niche. Maybe it's time I start playing CoD? 😝
@Ryu_Niiyama
It is not possible to live without influence from other Cultures.
At the End it also doesn't matter, we're all Humans and thats why History is reapiting itself so often.
@Azuris and yet this game is about just that. Which is cool. And it does matter. But you are more than welcome to feel how you do. I shall do the same. I am excited for this game, its protagonist, its theme, and its setting.
Looks absolutely fantastic, most importantly... Fresh and interesting!
I just wish they would rethink the name -.- it sounds a little cliche. Gah. What's in a name right?
Looks interesting, hopefully it runs well.
I will be keeping my eye on this one. I am looking forward to picking up Aztech Forgotten Gods (if it runs good), Outlast, Subnautica Below Zero (if it runs good), Ninja Gaiden Master Collection, and maybe Skyward Sword
