Animal Crossing: New Horizons has already won a bunch of awards over the past year, and now to top it off, it's taken out the best family game at the 24th Annual D.I.C.E. Awards. The other games in this category included Astro's Playroom, Dreams, Fall Guys and Sack Boy.
The only other first-party Nintendo title to feature on the night was Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit - winning the "racing game of the year" category. Competition in this category included Dirt 5 and F1 2020.
Upcoming Switch release Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 won best sports game) beating FIFA 21, MLB The Show 20, NBA 2K21 and PGA Tour 2K21), Fall Guys won the best online game, and Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate was awarded best fighting game ahead of UFC 4, Granblue Fantasy Versus and Them's Fightin' Herds.
Indie hit Hades was the star of the show with a total of five awards. It received the best game design, best game direction, action game of the year, an outstanding achievement for an independent game, and took out the game of the year. It managed to beat Animal Crossing, Final Fantasy VII Remake, Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us Part II.
"Game of the Year: The single game, without regard to system or delivery mechanism, voted by the membership of the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences that best utilizes the chosen medium to entertain users."
You can see the full list of winners over on the official Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences website. Have you tried out the GOTY Hades yet? Still enjoying Animal Crossing? Tell us down below.

Family game of the year award...lol. Kinda useless category, isn’t it?
Well ok that was 100% expected.
I prefer the "Played for years on end" Award
Surely AC winning that category was a nailed on outcome. Ha.
Mind you, if MK live won best racing game, must have been slim pickings. Sorry. I'd much rather play DIRT 5 (though not more than proper, home console MK of course!)
Well done Hades! Even beat LoS PII!
I think it's outrageous that AC is the headline when Hades was the star of the show, lol. Go play Hades, everyone! It's that good!
I had a lot of fun with this game. It's one of my most played games. But it really hits a point when it feels like there is just nothing meaningful left to do.
For how well the game has done, I feel a little let down on the lack of support for the last several updates.
I want more things like the addition of diving and growing pumpkins to be added to the game. Not just lists of items to buy and DIYs to grind from balloons.
Hades overstayed it’s welcome a bit for me but it was fun. With the story done I have no desire to keep playing. Good that it was successful though.
@NinChocolate "Family game of the year award...lol. Kinda useless category, isn’t it?"
Super Mario Maker 1 & 2, Ratchet & Clank, Snipperclips, Unravel Two are the previous 5 Family Game of the Year winners.
Weird to disrespect a family game award category on a Nintendo forum.
@Heavyarms55 Yes, I agree with you about the updates. But, on the other hand, I think I am content with where it is. I have 435 hours into this game, and I still play almost every day. For me it has become a chill, almost meditative experience. And, I continue to find new ways to be creative. My last project was to build a music concert venue on the island, now I am thinking about making a room devoted to paintings.
I only play less than half an hour a day, and yes, I will probably soon fall off. And I am spending more time playing other games.
But, I remember when New Leaf dropped the campsite update. It was interesting for a few days, but not too much. Likewise, I think any update at this point will not add that much to the game play loop experience.
I consider this a masterpiece of a game. That said, there are additions I would like: hopefully they are even now beginning on working on the next installation.
@Tulio517 yeah, I thought that was odd, too. Especially considering Hades is a console exclusive on Switch.
worthy winner and an awesome game.
@dugan,
You have hit the nail on the head, the game is meant to be a little bit each day, some days you have more to do, some days less.
Does anyone know what happened with nature day? It hasn't happened in my ac
I'm kind of scratching my head around how Mario Kart Live won Best Racing (in its defense, I haven't played it. My apartment is too small to make a track), but congratulations all the same to it and the rest of the winners, especially Supergiant Games for Hades.
Why does a singleplayer game win family goty?
@Low_ink it was also a nominee in the best online game of the year lol like what's there to do online in animal crossing, it didn't win obviously
@johnvboy yup, well said!
