UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 13th March, revealing that Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury has lost out on top spot for the first time since its launch in mid-February.
Mario's latest adventure has had to settle for second place this time around, as Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales swings into first. Sony's exclusive had been threatening to overtake Mario for the past couple of weeks, and thanks to plenty of new sales on PS5 in particular, it's now managed to do exactly that.
Elsewhere, though, Nintendo's had another solid week. Six of the top ten are exclusive to Switch, with three of Nintendo's own titles sitting in second, third, and fourth. Bravely Default II, another Switch exclusive which launched towards the end of last month, has now dropped out of the top 40.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
2 | 1 | Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales |
1 | 2 | Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury |
3 | 3 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
4 | 4 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
8 | 5 | Minecraft (Switch) |
5 | 6 | Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War |
7 | 7 | Grand Theft Auto V |
10 | 8 | Assassin's Creed Valhalla |
6 | 9 | Super Mario 3D All-Stars |
9 | 10 | Ring Fit Adventure |

I will buy Bowser's Fury late, maybe several months later, maybe on early 2022 as next month it will be my time to expand my BEMANI PS2 games from Beatmania IIDX, Pop'n Music and Keyboardmania.
@Carck It's a launch cross platform game like Breath of the Wild was for Switch/Wii U.
Nothing new, just shuffling the same deck, a couple of which are veritably ancient...
@Carck I mean half of the games on Switch are ports
@Carck
You mean like Switch and Breath of the Wild?
Also just a quick look at the top 10:
Mario 3D World - Wii U port
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Wii U port
Minecraft - Hardly new
Mario All Stars - 3 old Mario games
We Switch owners can hardly talk.
@Carck imagine buying a switch to play wii-U games
@Mr-Fuggles777
Well, imagine also buying XBOX and XBOX 360 just for playing Dance Dance Revolution and Kinect games.
Well, that's me.
@gaga64
More like half; GTA V, Minecraft, Super Mario 3D World, Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D All-stars are all pretty old aren't they?
@Mr-Fuggles777
I'll happily buy the games if it means not playing them on the Wii U.
I loathe the Wii U GamePad, the long boot times, the Wii U Pro Controller, it was a real low point for Nintendo.
@Carck Imagine buying a wii u port for full price instead of it just being backwards compatible.
@Carck imagine judging people by what they buy a PS5 for
@Carck Breath of the Wild says hello. But yeah, PS5 isn't much better. Kind sucks that both sides are doing it.
Unlike Breath of the Wild on Wii U and Switch, Miles Morales is meant to have noticeable improvements on ps5. I'm only going off reviews for both though. Miles Morales is by all accounts a very good game, which is really all that matters anyway. Looking forward to playing it, hopefully soon.
Fantastic to see 6 of the top-10 spots filled by Switch exclusives. Man, Animal Crossing and Mario Kart sure have legs...at this rate, they’ll become the Nintendo equivalent of GTA 5 - constantly in the top-10 for years and years after release! 😂
As PS5 stock becomes more available the UK charts begins to reveal its true form. Holiday 2021 is going to be very interesting when there's more PS5 games.
I might pick this up this week, I have it on Wii U but the Bowsers Fury mode looks fun. Overall though its great to see Nintendo doing very well in the UK these days
I will never understand Spider-Man fans.
Not a surprise. Licensed superhero games will be right up the average Playstation owners street.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Second attempt and still a pointless comment.
@TheFullAndy Just saying it's typical Playstation fodder and will be big with casuals, hence displacing Mario. Most of the comments on here are pointless. 🤷🏻♂️
Ring Fit sequel when?
You have to do it now!
I swear the chart I saw had super Mario at number one??
https://nintendoeverything.com/uk-sales-for-february-2021/
@shgamer yeah, but at least 3D World and All-Stars had “new” releases in the last 6 months and are here based on those. The others, not so much.
(GTA5 may at least have had new-gen releases, but that game was still in the top 10 before the new gen versions, and would likely still be Top 10 based on the old gen sales)
@Clyde_Radcliffe
So you are saying all the Mario games are also casual fodder then, along with Animal Crossing of course.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I havnt played Miles Morales yet (I'm waiting until I can grab a PS5) but Spiderman was one of my favourite games of last gen and an epic open world adventure. Saying that I am a massive Spiderman fan (Amazing is the only Marvel comic left on my monthly subscription) so I could be biased - it's also looking like they also implemented Taskmaster better than they have in the black widow movie.
@Carck well that backfired lol
Well this has been a very catty comment section...keep up the good work while I fetch some saucers of milk.
@Dethmunk
It is probably hovering around in the top 20/30 along with other evergreens like Pokemon and Breath of the Wild.
@Carck Better performance and DualSense's battery life is much longer with PS4 games..
@Chunkboi79 Imagine buying a Wii U port with another game called Bowser's fury. That was completely awesome if maybe a tad short and wasn't on Wii U, I could never imagine that lol.
Lol at that lack of self-awareness about talking about spiderman Miles Morales as a port when Mario 3d world is just that. Sides, it is a cross-gen release which isn't unheard during a launch of a new gen.
I like both Miles Morales and Bowser's Fury, so I think it's cool to see Spider-Man get some spotlight in the UK gaming world.
@RupeeClock That sounds like fighting talk. The Wii U pro controller is probably the finest controller ever built. I don't think I ever had a controller with such a good battery life.
The gamepad and long load times your probably right about.
@Doctor_Pancakes You can say that about literally any fanbase, don't dump on Spider-Man fans just because.
@Carck Regret the comment, don't you?
i am casual fodder i am catnip for the everyman i am honey roast hog to joe bloggs nibble me normies feast on my delicious flesh gobble gobble
@FlashmanHarry
I just can't get on with the Wii U pro controller, the ergonomics of it are nasty with the face buttons being below the right analogue stick (the only modern controller to do so), and the narrow trigger buttons that hurt the tips of your fingers.
Mario 3D World is absolutely AMAZING!!! I still own it for WiiU but the Switch version is 100% better, even without Bowsers Fury, but that is great fun too!
Highly recommend it
people actually have PS5s?
@bones I'm not one to pay $60 bucks for 3-5 hours of content so I can't imagine it lol
@MS7000 How? At least 95% of the ps4 games are able to be played (and in some instances upscaled) at no extra cost.
@RupeeClock That's fair enough I suppose. For me I'd take the Wii U pro controller over the switch version. It's a little bit bigger but it's lighter. Also I'd consider the button layout to be better for retro gaming especially for snes titles. Having the buttons at the same elevation as the D pad is a plus for me. Also having a bigger D pad helps.
Man why would they even make a Mario kart 9 at this point. You don’t fix what works
TFW a 7 year old WiiU game gets bumped out of the top selling spot by a $50 DLC on a list that still includes a decade old mediocre sandbox.
Although, how "well" is 3D World really selling when Mile's sales overtake it, and that game's sales are hobbled locked to a scarce to produce hardware kit, and sales for that game only open up in windows as limited hardware units filter in in waves? Sounds like UK software sales are kind of low to begin with at the moment if that's the result.
@blindsquarel bc instead of selling a million or two million copies in a year they would sell 20 million?
@Carck Imagine paying scalper price for a PS5 just to play Kingdom Hearts 3. That's exactly what my sister-in-law did.... She waiting this long for KH3, yet she couldn't wait a little longer to get a PS5 at normal retail price first...
@rockodoodle
MK8 Deluxe has been increasing in sales year upon year since release, much more than just one or two million a year.
MK9 will likely be a Switch 2 launch title.
Are there any US sales figures or worldwide?? Would really like to know the big picture, but I guess it’s not available.
@Chunkboi79
???
I am not 100% what you are referring to?
@rockodoodle
When 8 deluxe is the best selling game I think it is safe to say they will not make a new one for the switch. And 20mil a year would not happen for any game
That list is really missing something. It shows Minecraft is for Switch, and the other Switch games are obvious, but, all the others are multiplatform so it's not really a fair comparison. I'd much rather see how many PS5 Miles Morales sold, or how many copies of GTA 5 sold for PC, etc.
@NEStalgia
When PS5 gets a big supply boost, Miles gets a big sales boost.
@westman98 Miles gets a sales boost, yes. But it gets a sales boost limited to the number of hardware units that arrive, which should be much less than what you'd think would take you to the national #1 spot. There's, what, 100M Switches out there almost? And maybe 12M PS5s. And PS4 Miles sales should be a trickle by now and not connected to the bump?
I don't doubt the boost for Miles is real, but my point is if that limited number can top the chart, the numbers across the chart must be pretty bleak.
@MS7000 You mentioned Sony isn't much better, when they've been pretty consumer friendly all things considering.
@Carck Buying a PS5 to play a PS4 game isn't a bad outcome. Imagine buying a PS5 to play a PS4 DLC for $50...oh...wait...
Lol at some of these comments. I thought I was on Push Square for a second. 😁
But yeah, pretty standard looking week, but its great to see several Nintendo titles still in the top 10.
Bowser's Fury being 2-3 hours is a total myth. It's easily in the 10-15 range to 100% it, which is how long a $40 PS1 title was back in the day.
@Chunkboi79 Ohhhh, okay, I think I get what you are referring to now.
PS5 being able to play PS4 games is a good thing. Backwards compatibility is great, not to mention that if Switch was backwards compatible, perhaps half of Nintendo's output for the Switch wouldn't be Wii U ports.
I do have a minor nitpick about the PS5's library for the time being also being released for the PS4 simultaneously (not all games obviously, but stuff like Spider-Man and Horizon Forbidden West amongst other things). But that isn't really anti-consumer, that's just a personal problem I have because the PS5 could do with having it's own identity, and I would not want to purchase a PS5, when I have a perfectly good PS4 that can play the same games. I do want a PS5 eventually, but I want it to build up its library first.
That is where my comparison was coming in with the Switch and PS5 because the Switch did the same thing with the Wii U. Breath of the Wild being on Switch wasn't really anti-consumer either, though It was also on Wii U, but it does seem strange that the best argument for buying a console would be for something that plays just as well on another console.
@Carck I mean I did. I hadn't had a Playstation before and didn't want to buy a PS4 at the end of it's lifespan.
@NEStalgia
Miles Morales has a massive attach ratio on PS5 - something like 75%.
Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury has a much, much, much lower attach ratio.
@blindsquarel not per year, of course, but it’s not out of the question that MK9 would sell 20 million in its first year with the install base that it will have by the end of the year.
@RupeeClock I loved the gamepad, the pro controller, the eshop, the Virtual Console and the Miiverse so much! The Wii U was awesome and easily the best way to play Deus Ex Human Revolution as well!
@SpeedRunRocks my nine year old beat the game in just over 2 hours and 100% in less than 7. Though to be fair he is Mario mad and he loves it. He's played it through 3 times so he's definitely got he's moneys worth.
@westman98 I get that, but what I'm saying about the chart results is that, 75% of 0 is still 0. 75% of 1M is still less than 20% of 90M. Miles total sales are constrained by the number of actual hardware units available in a given wave entering the UK. Even if it were a free pack-in game included with every PS5, it would still have limited sales constrained by hardware availability. So if that's the #1 game in the UK charts, with heavily constrained total sales potential, what does that say about everything else on the chart? Let alone the stuff not on the chart. I would not expect that at the current moment in time, the #1 selling game would be the one that's materially limited in sales.
Although, this being a physical chart, it may be more an indication of the game preferences only of people who buy physical games.
@MS7000 when it was first announced that spiderman MM and HZD2 were coming to ps4 aswell as some others I wasn't a fan of that either. But looking at it from Sony's view, you have over 116 million loyal customers that would miss out on all your new games, so making some next gen only and others cross console makes sense. You still get a much better experience on the new console.
And I'd argue the PS5 does have its own identity. Its faster, plays alot of the old games much better. Control for instance playing at 60fps or RT in the other mode. Several games have 120fps modes. You get 20 of some of the best last gen games with psplus to download straight away. And the killer feature, the dualsense. Hands down the best controller I've ever used. So much better than the dualshock, adds so much to games and I've been amazed how many developers are using the features.
Yeah the 5 does have some issues(hard drive space being the biggest) but I would never go back to my pro.
@Chunkboi79 The backwards compatible one is a bit iffy, same with 3ds and ds. For one, no disk drive, and having you able to download them would anger the people who bought them physically. Also for the Wii U and the 3ds/ds the 2nd screen would make it hard to format.
@NEStalgia Apparently 67% of games sales in the UK in 2020 were digitally. So really these charts only tell a tiny story of what's really selling the most on any given week. Though physical sales did rise in 2020 to 18.2 million.
All I know is Covid has made the gaming industry a lot of money.
@Col_e_h Then just buy the disk version then.
@MS7000 Well to be honest, I wouldn't say that the PS5 needs a new identity to sell (as it's flying off the shelves now). While we all know that the PS5 will get new games down the road, you're right there are a lack of ps5 exclusives. However, I think we all know that the reason for that is because scalpers don't play video games.
Demon Souls is selling at an abysmal pace right now because of it. I'm okay with paying for a PS5 for a few reasons. My PS4 is 7 years old now, who knows how much longer it will last. My wife could play online multiplayer games now, and the upgraded 60fps, 4k, and ray tracing support is worth it for the games that support it.
@Serialsid That certainly makes more sense, and probably makes further sense if we could put a demogrpahic on physical sales. Young people, little people, scientologists. If it's a demographic that falls into Spiderman's territory it could give that particular game an artificial bump in an all physical chart.
Nintendo has been steady for the course, and Microsoft has been aggressive per their position. But I do wonder about a lot of the big games companies. Sony, Square, EA, etc. How many of them are making business decisions and being presssured by investors into decisions to capture that "growth trend", while it's a temporary artificial trend that will crash hard once people stop staying home so much....and where will that leave the industry? I can imagine a lot of industry wide spendingo n growth that will never be met based on a short term situational sales boom.
@Chunkboi79 As a PS5 owner that wonders more and more why I have it, despite knowing there's a handful of exclusives and mostly just wanting an upgraded PS4 experience for my ailing 4Pro, I do suspect FOMO is driving a lot of the current sales. People want it because they can't have it and might want it. I think long-term, while MS is carving an identity, and Switch has an identity, I think once the short term FOMO frenzy dies down and people know they can get one any time they want one, it's going to start looking a lot less enticing as a prospect. GoW and HzD can only carry them so far, and we don't' have much of a roadmap beyond that so far, but we have a lot of indication it's sequels of sequels for some time.
@rockodoodle
That is what 8 deluxe did. But the difference is deluxe is a port and they would not have to develop a brand new one. If they would sell the same why would you go with the harder option. Not saying I do not want a new one. But they will not make one exclusive for the switch
@NEStalgia
The Switch's install base is not 90× higher than the PS5 install base in the UK.
Miles Morales is more than capable of outselling high profile Switch games when there is enough PS5 hardware in stock.
@NEStalgia according to some analysts, reports today are showing the switch will/ could have its biggest year yet in 2021/2022. The gaming industry is a juggernaut, easily bigger than movies and music now. I don't think it's going to slow down anytime soon.
On your other post, I'm the opposite with my PS5. I love it and am really enjoying the experience so far. And as for a road map, I already know I'm going to get returnal, deathloop, Ratchet and clank, Kena, the devil inside and maybe Stray(still not sure about that one). Plus all the 3rd party games coming. Then we know HZD2, GOW ragnarok and GT7(🤞) are coming in the next 12 months. What games do we know are coming to xbox in the next year apart from Halo? And I say this as a series x owner. Yes Nintendo have their identity, no one can touch them in their corner and I hope it stays like that. Sony's identity
is great exclusives and hopefully a brilliant experience with PSVR2(if it's a good as I'm expecting they can corner that market). And yes MS is certainly building theirs(I look forward to the future when the start delivering on all this promise), but I do wonder long term what their effect will be on the gaming space with the service model they have now.
@Carck The adaptive triggers are worth it.
@NEStalgia It's worth it when you buy the original game + Miles Morales bundle.
@Chunkboi79 you can put a disk drive into something that’s supposed to be a portable.
@Serialsid It's a little dangerous to go on the "gaming is bigger than movies and music" path. By revenue that may be true, but not by market volume. The other problem is they're including mobile which is the lions share of that revenue, but that's a completely different market. While music and movies have a market in the billions, CONSOLE gaming tops out at, even if we go optimistic and round both ps4 and switch to 200m combined...... If we add xb, pc, and say 500-600m users total (that's optimistic) that Isn't even close in market share to music and film.
With mobile is a different story, but that's a whole other market with other content and other monetization methods. They lump it together but they really shouldn't. Might as well add casinos while they're at it.
Plus movies and film had revenue gutted with the rise of subscription. That's now arrived in gaming. Of Microsoft isn't netflix of gaming, netflix will be eventually.
With ps5 the problem i have with it if hardware and ecosystem have been kind of behind xb for years now, so i default to all 3rds party on xb if it's not on switch. But Sonys own games have really distilled into all being if a single genre I'm kind if meh about. The vaunted cinematic blockbusters just don't wow me much. I buy them, add to the backlog and forget about them. Their niche games I'm more interested in. I'm playing gravity rush 1 and 2 on my ps5. I'm playing concrete genie. I still haven't played through gow or got...meh. Someday. It's kind if a narrowing scope. Ironically you do see it too. A lot of the games your mentioned are also the reason i got a ps5. R&c, kena, stray, psvr, it's just that most of the "good" stuff is second party or timed exclusives coming to xb or nsw later anyway.
I like my ps5.... But there's a very limited subset of games I'm really interested from what we know of so far (excluding my ps4 backlog ). 5 years ago Sonys games spoke to me as much s Nintendo. Today.... Not much of their studios makes much that excites me. I "like" many of them, but i don't get giddy about them. R&c does. I do wish Sony would have been making more genres. They went from being THE RPG console to being the console with the least rpgs... (Excluding time limited antics.) Replaced with linear cinematic adventure games. Platformer shooters of the modern age.
@Carck in fairness you could say fancy buying a Switch to play a Wii U game many times!
