GTA V is one of the all-time greats and all that, but did you ever wish it was, you know, just a bit more historical? Of course you did! Everyone loves the mucky, stinky grime of Ye Olden Days, which is why we all love The Witcher! We just can't get enough of it. Cyberpunk? No thanks. Steampunk? Too modern. Horsepunk? Now that's where it's at.
Luckily, Rustler is here to fill in the gap that Red Dead Redemption left in our souls. Anti-hero protagonist Guy (more technically, "The Guy") is on a mission to win The Grand Tournament, the prize for which is the princess' hand in marriage. To do so, he's going to have to do a little bit of murder and a lot of horse theft, as well as slightly more bizarre things, like shooting cows into the sky. Hey, they had fun in medieval times, too.
With a healthy dose of pop-culture references, your mileage may vary on whether or not you find Rustler's constant winks to the camera and Monty Python quotes funny, but it's certainly an irreverent take on a much-trod genre. Trailers show a "Pimp My Horse" shop, using a lute as a weapon, and the ability to walk away from explosions without looking at them.
The game has just come out in Early Access on Steam, and there's a demo, too - but it's just been announced for consoles as well, meaning that we can all nick a horse on the Switch some time later this year (the devs say "when the time comes", which is supremely unhelpful). The game will cost $29.99 on the Nintendo Switch eShop.
Does Rustler make you horse with excitement, or does its sense of humour rustle your jimmies in all the wrong ways?

Hope it's better than the microwave burgers they make
@X68000 Haha, good one. I actually tried one of those a while back, much to my dismay, so I'm definitely in full agreement with you.
Hmm, looks interesting. I've stayed away from gta because of the inappropriate content, but it never gave an actual rating for this game. It does look fun however, even if I'm not a huge fan of the camera angle. I'll wait for some reviews.
EDIT: I just looked at the steam page, and this is what it says for maturity: MATURE CONTENT DESCRIPTION The developers describe the content like this: there might be a lot of blood and swearing.
There doesn't appear to be any nudity, but it is unfinished nonetheless. Could turn into a good game though!
@KateGray The byline is close enough, but I feel like it should have been Grand Theft Arab...
“Could turn into a good game”? That doesn’t sound promising. I’ll bite, though, if it ends up with good reviews on Steam later in development. Looks fantastic and the premise is awesome.
We already have some medieval open World games like Zelda, The Witcher, Skyrim
What we need is more modern open world game
The only ones available on Switch are both Saints Row and LA Noire
Nos sure why Rockstar don't want to release GTA on Switch...
Maybe we could game other games like Sleeping Dogs to fill the lack of this genre
I cackled at “Horsepunk”! 🤣
@Low_ink there's inappropriate content in GTA? Where?
Hmm, shame it's medieval "GTA when it was still a top down game"
I really hope this turns out to be as fun as it looks.
That kind of makes me smile. Looks like the off time you spend with random ***** in an MMORPG while waiting for your guild-mates to log on.
@Antiriad2097 On the esrb's website on gta 5, the three tags I dislike are:
Nudity
Strong Language
Strong Sexual Content
Which I don't want in my games, but the idea of a family friendly gta sounds great! I think a Zelda spinoff would fit nicely in that style.
I will wait for Ginsters thanks
@Low_ink Have you played LEGO City Undercover? If not, check it out!
@Krambo42 I will, thanks for the recommend!
Speaking of GTA, I would love to see a Chinatown Wars sequel for the Switch. Chinatown Wars was my favorite DS game and my favorite GTA game.
@Low_ink you're passing up excellent storylines if you're not getting the game because of mature rating Red Dead Redemption 2 is a fantastic game
@Low_ink sorry, but my right to disagree to this is just as ok as you not wanting those topics in your game. But I do. I’d love gta on switch. Even better would be red dead redemption 1, IMO. I think we will get both at some point.
Did you play bayonetta, saints row, watch dogs, madworld, manhunt 2??? just a few Nintendo console games.
If it was full 3D then they would have had my attention.
@Mountain_Man never mind that, we still need GTA V. I find it hard to believe Rockstar haven’t managed to expand their online user base on Switch.
Hopefully they may announce something alongside the PS5 and Series S/X ports.
@Antiriad2097
When everything is inappropriate, nothing is inappropriate.
@X68000 GTA 5 is okay. I would much prefer another game in the style of Chinatown Wars.
I'd love to see a new Chinatown Wars too. It was a great mix of the old and new style GTA's
This is definitely a parody game, but the feedback has been rather positive on Steam even though it's still in early access.
@Larams I'm not denying that... but if there's too much of what I don't like, I won't pick it up. It's also not the mature rating in and of it self that's the problem, I do research on games I'd like to play.
@Donutman I never said anything about not having the games on switch, infact seeing how many people love them they should've been on the switch 2 years ago! Just because I dislike something doesn't mean others don't, and if I did like a game, I would love to have it on the go! And I play more than nintendo games lol, otherwise I'd have next to nothing to play! My favorite game of all time is made by an indie studio, in fact!
@Savino Bingo! I am a Christian and would rather not have to contend with (the one word which I'm pretty sure is bannable) in games that I play. And yes, It is also a moral guideline.
"We just can't get enough of it. Cyberpunk? No thanks. Steampunk? Too modern. Horsepunk? Now that's where it's at."
Hm-Hm! ...w-wait. HOLD ON A SECOND!!
Steampunk! Tell me more about it. I want some RPG with steam machines, gear wheels, old clocks, nerdy girls and alternative goth chicks that wear hats and big glasses.
@savino For me it isn't a religious reason, but GTA5 made me very uncomfy multiple times even though I'm playing that series since the very first one (which I never was able to beat, because you only have one life iirc...). Once you need to actively torture someone. And there are so many sexual things in that game nobody cares about, but whenever a westener sees an animegirl (that isn't even involved in any questionable stuff) they get rabies and fantasize something about sexism and abusing women even though there are really a lot of women working in the anime/manga-sector... Why are things that make me (as a woman) really uncomfy okay just because they're western, but the cute animegirl that isn't doing anything wrong but makes me comfy (I do overall feel a lot more comfy in Japanese games than in western games, even though the west thinks Japan is the pure evil for some reason.) is getting hated by everyone just because it's Japanese and the white people tilt and think about the worst whenever they hear the word "Japanese"? I never had sex in a Japanese game. I never killed an animegirl and stole her money. I never paid an animegirl for services. I have never seen an animegirl stripclub. I never got a lapdance by an animegirl. I never saw an animegirl prostitute. etc etc
It's kinda sad that western people need all this violence and sexual things to feel mature and never question it... Like what's with Game of Thrones? It was just hot air, violence and sex. ...Oh and Daenerys is 13 according to the books. But that's okay, because she isn't an animegirl, I guess? For your information, Altina is older than Daenerys... And nobody is "sleeping" with her.
You only say no thanks to cyberpunk because the switch will never be able to play it 😂
That's a different take from being a hero. lol A must have to just have for game sake.
@Low_ink So no inappropriate content, just content you don't want/like. There's a difference. There's not nearly enough of those tags in Switch games imo.
@Antiriad2097 I would consider nudity inappropriate, would you not? Same for Strong language. But as for there being hardly any games I immediately rule out, yeah, I'd have to agree. I believe they do need to put more of those types of games on switch, even if I don't like them. It's absurd they haven't ported any gta game yet, or any other game really.
Of course the main reason I don't play these games is because I'm a Christian, and I don't want to cut off games completely because my favorites are full of sin. Given that fact it's perfectly reasonable that I'd want games I'm able to play, It's one of the main reasons I stick with Nintendo, after all.
But as for the definition of inappropriate, I define it as: Anything that you would not feel comfortable showing a family, with ages as low as 5.
@Low_ink No, I would most definitely not consider nudity inappropriate. What could be more natural? Strong language is just language, an integral part of it and something that adds texture to characters. I'd much rather have this in games than the twee rubbish at the other end of the spectrum. I'd agree that it may not be appropriate for family consumption, but it has its place.
Is virtual sin still a sin? Is it not sinful to kill if it's a cutesy enemy instead of the same pixels arranged in a humanoid fashion? Can games let you explore and deal with these issues in a harmless manner?
@Antiriad2097 I see. Well this is what I believe, and will continue to live by. And if I were not a Christian I would be completely willing to discuss this and find a solution. But I am a Christian, and must listen to what the Bible says above all. Here's a passage about abstaining from sexual immorality. Ephesians 5:3a: "But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you," I consider nudity to violate this.
As for language, here's Ephesians 5:4: "Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving." I would say that strong language falls into this category. Not everyone in life curses every two sentences. It adds nothing to the conversation, and if fact shows weakness of controlling speech! I want little of this in any of the media I consume. 1 Corinthians 15:33 states: "Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”" I believe that this applies to anything we consume lots of.
That being said, I am very strict on these things, even among my family! I want to leave life with minimal regrets. But I want to enjoy certain things while I'm here. That being said, if I feel like something is sin, I do my best to stay far away from it. If it isn't sin, what does it matter ten thousand years down the line? I probably won't even care about it by then!
As for virtual sin, I don't believe I'm qualified to answer this. That said, I'll do my best! I do not find it sinful to kill code, regardless of how the pixels are laid out on screen. The dangerous part is how you interact with what is "safe". If you kill random innocent creatures, would that be sin? No, no it wouldn't be. God put humanity above all creatures, whether they be in the air, sea, or ground. Not to mention these aren't even real creatures we're talking about.
What I do know is that it is far too easy to sin in multiplayer games. If a creature you intentionally kill belongs to another player, yes that would clearly be sin. It would be taking from another for your own benefit. What if it was an accident? Then what you do after the accident could be sin. What about voice chat? I don't even need to say anything here, we know there's ample opportunity for sin there too.
But as for the question, sometimes? Whether or not it's sin largely depends on how you the human treat it. I can't say the specifics, because, well, I don't decide them. God does. And if the creator of the universe tells me not to do something, I really don't want to do it!
I try to get all morality from the Inventor of it, that being God. Trust me, I have different opinions than what God says, but I follow Him, not myself. Gaming is fun, all hobbies are, but I cannot put it above God or what He says. When I realize I put anything above God, I find out how quickly and easily I can get it out of my life. I do not want this to happen to videogames.
If you have any more questions or comments, feel free to ask! This conversation has been good for my soul, and keeping me on track. Also, sorry about the really long message, this topic cannot easily be summed up into a short paragraph or two.
