FarmVille developer Zynga and Lucasfilm Games have joined forces to announce Star Wars: Hunters. It's a new online third-person competitive shooter, is "free-to-download" and will be arriving on the Switch, App Store and Google Play later this year.
The game takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire and is inspired by iconic Star Wars locales. You'll be able to take control of daring Bounty Hunters, heroes of the Rebellion, Imperial stormtroopers and more in fast-paced and "visually stunning" combat.
The teaser trailer gives us a look at some new faces including a Wookie warrior and red lightsaber-wielding fighter. Here's what Lucasfilm Games VP, Douglas Reilly, had to say about Star Wars Hunters:
“Star Wars: Hunters draws inspiration from classic Star Wars stories and settings, but with a look and feel that is different from anything we have done before. We’re thrilled to introduce this wildly creative cast of characters to our fans on Nintendo Switch, where they can join with their friends in thrilling battles at home or on the go.”
Once again, Star Wars Hunters will be arriving as a free-to-download title later this year. Think you would be interested? Leave a comment down below.

I'm surprised that this game isn't getting more hate considering the developer and it being F2P...
@Toy_Link F*ck Zynga and f*ck free to play. Bringin the hate 👍
Zynga still exists?
Did not catch that it's from Zynga during the direct. That is weird to say the least. But I will not complain about more Star Wars.
The developer does make me worry a bit. But hey, it's free and you won't even need a Nintendo Online membership. Besides, we barely have any Star Wars games. No, pinball doesn't count and Lego Star Wars isn't available yet.
@dojmin Best Star Wars game Jedi Academy says hi.
I choose to be optimistic about a new Star Wars game that isn't an EA game. Can't wait to try it out!
Hard to be mad when its a star wars game and we don't have to many of them. so is it going to be a battle royal type thing or?
@Snatcher Going by competitive shooter I would think it's more like Overwatch style than battle royale.
@XenoShaun OH they have my interest.
@NImH Wasn't Zynga the company that actually said they have zero care about the quality of their games as long as people give them money?
If there's one thing we can say about EA, is that they never said THAT.
@XenoShaun oh snap I forgot Jedi Knight series lol. Yeah, Jedi Academy is great
F***ing Zynga. That’s when you know it’ll be a soulless shell of a game designed to extort money. The Uwe Boll of video games.
@Toy_Link At least it's not EA. I'll hold off my judgement until I played it. Free to play, so microtransactions will be there. But if they're cosmetic I can live with that.
I'm a big Star Wars fan, but I predict this will be totally forgettable.
I was hoping for Republic Commando... There were rumours but I guess they were just that.
I was pumped that it's a brand new star wats on switch. Then it's free to play, and then the killing blow, it's also free for mobile devices.
Can't we just get a proper new star wars game on switch please?
It will be like all the other Star Wars mobile games we probably ignore.
@Toy_Link I was just about to grant your wishes, but then didn't care. On a serious note: not much was shown and I usually reseve my judgement. But to be honest, my expectations ARE quite low.
@nessisonett LOL nice one. Uwe Boll of videogames. How fitting!
Sticking with Battlefront 2 and Squadrons for Star Wars multiplayer. I stopped bothering with F2P mobile games years ago.
@Bizaster,
it was a teaser trailer that did not even tease.
So many new f2p are coming to switch. I think they will make a switch pro with cellular just so they can get more f2p games.
Yeah no, not Zynga.
Also, F for Republic Commando.
Arena games have to be good to beat Splatoon. I have zero hope for this one.
Urghh, Zynga.
As soon as i saw it was made by them, it's a straight no. You know it'll be riddled with Microtransactions at every available opportunity.
@jrpacman thats what i thought when i read this as well
Twisted by the darkside Star Wars Hunters has become.
They should have at least dropped some gameplay on us or more game details.
Lost me right at F2P.
I saw FTP in the headlines, I look at the trailer and then I Zynga was the developer. The force is weak with this one. This will pass for me.
Is no one else noticing the article says free to download, not F2P. This is going to heavily monetised and I wouldn't be surprised to see pay to win mechanics.
..That time when the phrase "but, hey, at least it's not EA..." doesn't seem to work.
Zynga paid them 700 trillion dollars for the rights.
What I'd rather not have:
An isometric low-poly 3D twin-stick shooter with characters on foot and touch controls, like Zynga's Tiny Royale.
What I'd like to see:
Zynga has experienced developers. Assuming that whatever they're making is best played with a touch screen, perhaps a decent MOBA set in the star wars universe. I think Zynga would be a great choice for that. There's a sizable market for mobile MOBAs in asia that is currently up for grabs, and we're seeing lots of other companies make plays for that space (Tencent's Pokemon Unite, for example). A good IP, devs with a history of mobile experience, already established games to advertise within via push notifications....Zynga would be near-ideal.
That said, Aspyr media is the one to watch for older AAA ports, and Disney is adding developers outside EA's publishing labels. So I fully expect a flood of Star Wars games in the second half of the Switch's life, and if it just so happens that a mobile port was easy with the faster dev cycle, than it's a good sign regardless of the game's quality on release for the prospect of the license reaching other developers with console or PC gamers in mind purpose-built for the hardware.
The fact it’s a mobile game and free to play doesn’t thrill me.. but it might be okay. Not excited, but will see what reviews and Gameplay footage are like closer to the time
@Toy_Link I feel like making the first comment in the thread and the content of the comment, you were looking for people to hate on it.
If it’s good, I’ll play it. If it’s bad, then I’ll delete it. That’s all I can say from watching the trailer. No hate, only anticipation.
A Star Wars game should have my hyped. This honestly is worse than nothing at all.
F2P and multiplayer only. Yuck
The highlight of the direct/s
I usually try not to pass judgment on anything until more is known and reviewed. But I agree with many on here as soon as it was said to be F2P, Zynga, and also will be available for phones any excitement went down the toilet along with last nights dinner. I agree with you 100% @nessisonett It will join the every growing long list of soulless shells of a "game" diseased with all the usual sins nowadays with mobile games.
Who the hell is zynga?
Moisture Farmville
This sure sounds like it will be a hot dumpster fire...
This was an underwhelming reveal. I hate teasers with barely a logo.
If it's part of the new Canon I wouldn't like I anyway. But F2P too? No freaking way. Disgusting.
I will try any Star Wars game, and if it’s free, yeah, no reason not to check it out. But I don’t have high hopes.
Also, @dojmin-I don’t know man...SW Pinball is pretty great. On top of being a great pinball game, the presentation is fantastic. I’d recommend it to anyone who wants something Star Warsy. I’ve had more fun with it/it has done a better job of scratching that Star Wars itch than any of the SW games I have for XB1.
Darth Vader voice: NOOOOOOOOO!!!!
