Crackle's new five-part documentary series Playing with Power: The Nintendo Story is only days away from release. Exploring Nintendo's early origins to the modern-day, Crackle released a first look trailer last Friday and now, Nintendo Life has been given access to an exclusive clip before next week's launch.
Calling this clip "Staying Power", you can spot several well-known industry figures commenting on Nintendo's history, including former Nintendo of America spokesperson Howard Phillips, game designer Cliff Bleszinski, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell and Head of Xbox Phil Spencer.
Leading up to next week, Crackle has released this synopsis:
Playing With Power: The Nintendo Story peels back the curtain on the famously-secretive Japanese company that would eventually take the global videogame industry by storm. Discover the humble beginnings of a gaming business that began many decades before the invention of television, and ride along the bumpy road of hits, misses, and wild ideas that turned Nintendo from a local playing card maker into a worldwide household name.
Narrated by Sean Astin, the electrifying story is presented by an ensemble of Nintendo personnel, celebrity icons, and industry veterans including Wil Wheaton, Alison Haislip, former Nintendo CEO Reggie Fils-Aimé, and head of Xbox Phil Spencer.
Due to go live on March 1st, we'll be bringing you our impressions of this series soon.

Really wish this was available somewhere else so us in the UK can watch it
So a puff piece then.
Alison Haislip<3333
(she was on G4 TV)
@matdub It's a documentary...? Where did you get puff piece? Sony is airing it on their Crackle streaming service.
Wondering if they'll interview anybody from the Japanese side of things, the people that were really driving the company and making the decisions. Although Howard has a lot of great info.
Cant wait to watch!
Man Howard looks old. I am looking forward to it but it could be a washout like the last one. Hopefully they will confirm the things some us know but couldn't say publicly. Possible but unlikely.
Would love to watch if it was on Netflix UK
@sc100 nice profile pic, reminds me of the good old Wii days, City Folk was my first AC game
What was going on with SMB3 right at the end there? Was that Game Genie footage???
Still find it funny that a Nintendo document is premiering on a Sony service 😂
@Zidentia People age. That’s life. Unless you are Paul Rudd.
@DAHstroy Thanks, it was my first AC game too! Remained a daily AC player ever since. It really is my favorite series.
@Tandy255
Well of course but I caught up with him a few years ago at an event we were both doing and he seems to have really changed recently. Still a great guy regardless.
Is there going to be a segment where they explain how no one in the UK gave 2 ***** and yet I have to spend the rest of eternity hearing about the garishly coloured, super ugly, super hard and super average games like contra, castlevania and megaman
@bryce951 no, because this documentary is about Nintendo, not bryce951.
One of the most interesting things I ever learned about Howard Phillips was in the book Console Wars, in that he was courted by Tom Kalinske to join Sega as their spokesperson, and decided at the last minute to not join them, mostly due to their stance on violent video games (Phillips is not a fan of them). If he would have joined them, that would have been the ultimate middle finger to Nintendo, as Nintendo and Sega were like Coke and Pepsi at the time.
@Tandy255 lol I've never realized that but it's true.
@Tasuki it’s not, Sony sold it a couple of years ago so there is no Sony connection to the service anymore
