Next year, Game Freak is venturing into uncharted territory with the release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus for Nintendo Switch.
It takes place in Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl's Sinnoh region and transports the series back to a time when Pokémon roamed freely in much harsher environments.
The official game site for this upcoming Switch release has shared some additional information about this "long-gone era" and perhaps one of the highlights on the page is a look at the Poké Balls of old. Here's a description and some artwork:
"The Poké Balls of old were apparently built a little differently from the ones we know so well. They were made mostly of wood, and steam puffed from their tops when Pokémon were caught."
According to a number of Pokémon sources, the wooden build doesn't match Johto's history of Poké Balls originally being made out of Apricorns. Sinnoh is its own region though (and this may be a different period), so perhaps it did things differently.
So, what do you think of the old-style Poké Ball that puffs steam out of the top? Leave a comment down below.

Remember; Those are acorns basically.
Deadly ass acorns.
I love them. They're so cool. Really love the outfits as well.
I hope they do a collector's edition with one of these Pokeballs
"Kurt's old balls came rolling home..." 🎶🎶🎶
Regardless of Sinnoh being a different region, is it not also possible that this design could have come between Apricorn balls and modern day ones?
@ImagineerNik : If they do any kind of limited edition, I want one with a special Chatot themed Joy-Con (with a microphone) so that we can give voice commands to Pokémon in battle and teach Chatot the wonders of our beautiful, and totally not puerile or vulgar human vocabulary.
I love these designs.
I can't wait to play The Legend of Arceus: Bidoof of the Wild.
@Silly_G Now I’m picturing Kurt’s old balls. Eeeeugh.
"Old balls, new game"
Never say that again
Interesting design, especially with the zipper where the button usually is.
Edit: Okay, it's a latch. Kind of looked like some old-timey zipper setup at first.
Not gonna lie, I'd totally read a series companion book about Pokeball technology, past and present.
It’s a cool design! The clip makes sense!
Old balls.... I’m cackling!

@Tyranexx I don't think that's a zipper... I think that's a latch.
@nessisonett : No need to thank me.
@MegaVel91 ...Actually, you might be right. Looked like a sort of zipper at first glance.
Pokemon is going Ninja.
Where is my Samurai ?
I'm so stoked for this.
Today was amazing.
I don’t follow Pokémon much. Nice design, though. Almost steampunk-ish.
Back then, no high technology which will make the game better.
@Mr_Persona For sure, I really hope they go all in with this theme as it's different for sure
Came here to see some old balls
Dat Pokemon Lore.
@OnlyItsMeReid yep its like going back in time and learning the old history of Pokèmon before the first game came out.
I feel like a pokemon could pick that lock from the inside.
Given the locale based on the Hokkaido of yore, it’ll be interesting to see what references there will be to Ainu culture and design. You can already see some subtle nods in the designs of the characters’ clothing.
It’s not super overt, but there are definitely influences drawn from the almost fractal-like embroidery often found on traditional Ainu garb.
It’ll be interesting to see if there are any allusions to Ainu folklore and spiritualism too. Gold and Silver incorporated Kyoto’s temples and shrines pretty heavily into their design, so I wonder to what degree we’ll see Hokkaido’s mythos drawn from here.
I think the professor might be young Oak.
He used those kind of balls in the Celebi movie when he went forward in time and met Ash while he was a kid
@Markiemania95 "and this may be a different period"
@Anti-Matter Pokémon Conquest has joined the chat.
@Absol That was added after I posted my comment.
@NorseGamerTommy As I recall, young Oak's Poke Balls looked more like a combination lock.
@NorseGamerTommy Well, young Oak's Pokéballs in the 4th movie required a key twist mechanic to open them, which doesn't appear to be the case here.
Plus, this is supposed to take place hundreds of years ago, not just 30 or so.
Loving those old balls
@Absol Yes, just to clarify, I updated the post after reading the comment by @Markiemania95. Made a good point!
@Carnictis I'm glad you could join us, old ball.
@Liam_Doolan very happy to be here ^_^
I just wish that the shoe aesthetic matched the male protag’s hat aesthetic lol. His hat is the only thing that doesn’t really match up.
@Doofenshmirtz moans about subtitles!
(Yes I'm still doing this, pls don't hate me, just a fan of Phineas & Ferb.)
@noswitchbutidc lol, it's fine
The steam puffing out after a successful catch is a clever touch, I'm sure it will be helpful to know from a distance whether you've caught a Pokemon, more so than the little glow of the traditional pokeball that we know.
