Last summer, we shared the news that Italian developer 3DClouds was working on a brand new pirate-based RPG called King of Seas. The announcement went down a treat, and while the new title missed its initial 2020 release window, a new partnership means the game's in very good hands.
Today, the developer has announced that it has signed a publishing deal with UK studio Team17, with plans now in place to launch the game across Switch and other platforms in May 2021. 3DClouds says the new deal will "provide additional resources for the team to work on enhancing the gameplay quality as well as implement further languages into the game."
Francesco Bruschi, CEO of 3DClouds, has shared the following in a press release:
"We are extremely happy and proud about this collaboration with Team17. It’s a fantastic opportunity for 3DClouds and, especially, for King of Seas, which will reach new levels of quality and an even wider audience. We look to the future with renewed optimism, confident that we can continue to work with Team17 for a long period of time."
If you need a quick catch up on the game itself, here's an official overview. It'll launch on Switch this May for £24.99 / €24.99 / $24.99 / $39.99AUS:
King of Seas is an action role-playing game set in a deadly procedurally generated pirate world. In a ferocious plot, you will fight to regain what has been taken away and embark on an epic adventure in a fantastic world, filled with battles, lost islands and treasures. A universe full of amazing characters and breathtaking missions will keep you anchored as you strive to become the king of all pirates.

I'm interested but would like to see some gameplay.
I would love to see an updated port of Sid Meier's Pirates.
Yo ho yo ho, near the hooks, I'll never go
I love seeing lots of seamen.

How generic and rhetorical is that?
While I accept it could be good, and Team17 support should help, I'm sceptical currently.
@Lordplops It wouldn't be the first time I've struggled with seamen splashed all over my screen.
Gameplay looks really similar to Sid Meyers Pirates! I'll wait for the reviews but looking good so far
I'm looking forward to PS4 screenshots and gameplay in the eShop like they did with Xenon Racer? /jk /s
All we need now is another British studio to make "Thief of Kings" on PlayStation and then it will all come full circle!
Age of Booty: Remastered
Is there any on foot island combat or strictly naval at sea?
Why play this when we have Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag?
@Broforce put over 100 hrs into black flag - I'm good.
@KBrozov In that case you definitely don't need to play this garbage.
I've wanted something similar to Sid Meier's Pirates! The trailer doesn't really show much other than sea battles.
I'll keep an eye on this, but might see what Black Flag has to offer.
@eltomo actually, I just watched a few minutes of Black Flag, it makes more sense to get that.
Other games from the same developer (+ NintendoLife score)
All-Star Fruit Racing 6/10
Xenon Racer 4/10
Race With Ryan 4/10
@FarsanBaloo A 6 for All-Star Fruit Racing is too generous. I would give it a 4 at most.
@Broforce I couldn't understand why you could only race Starfruit when there's so many others to choose from - Papaya, Pineapple ... Mangoes even.
