After multiple reports and rumours, earlier this week, Activision finally made it official - announcing Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time for the Nintendo Switch. It's priced at $39.99 / £44.99 and will be arriving digitally and physically on 12th March.
For those of you planning on getting a digital copy, you might curious to know the file size. According to the official Nintendo game page listing, Crash's fourth outing will take up 9.4 GB of space. Note: It's down as 9.3 GB on the Switch eShop.
For the sake of comparison, Toys for Bob's original Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy took up 5.3 GB of space, while Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was originally 9.3 GB in size.
If you opt for a digital copy, you'll also score the "Totally Tubular Skins" for Crash and Coco, which are available upon completion of the second level.
Speaking to Push Square earlier this week, Toys for Bob Creative Producer Lou Studdert revealed how Crash 4 would run on Switch, touching on the resolution and framerate.
"It's 720p when undocked, and 1080p when docked. Frame rate is 30."

"It's priced at $39.99 / £44.99"
$39.99 converts to around £29.99 in British pounds... So why does it cost £44.99 and not the bargain price America is getting? Seems we Brits are getting fleeced just because Crash is very popular here?
I wish I could remove a skin - namely, the Activision logo. I'd consider this game if not for the publisher, and I've never played a Crash game (though it looks as if its constantly on-rails...)
Common size, very nice for a pretty big title like this. Anyway, I go physical whenever I can.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Prices across regions are often pretty inconsistent for whatever reason. If you were to buy it digitally, I guess you could always temporarily change your region to Russia and buy it for almost half as much considering a UK Paypal account works in their eShop.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I could be wrong but I seem to recall it being said that the UK price includes 20% tax and the US price doesn’t?
Ugh, digital only purchase bonuses. Way to kick physical buyers in the shins. They're only skins thankfully but I hate when they pull this stuff.
I'd somehow missed the announcement that this was actually coming to the Switch so that's cool! I still need to finish the N Sane Trilogy though.
@Clyde_Radcliffe you think the US & UK shop prices is bad for this game? over here in australia we have to fork out AU$69.95 for the game tbh. our AU prices are ridiculous but then again NZ games are more expensive there than they are in AU. consider yaself lucky that the UK & US get most games alot cheaper than we do tbh
Day one for me been holding out for the ps4 ver. for a year just for it to come to the switch. I wanted to get it phsical Buuuut might not bc I want them skins, and I think they look really cool, all in all I'm gonna get this game and love it. Also I want to give a warning to any new crash player trying to get this game, I heard it is harder then the og crash games even in mordern mode its going to be harder, (I'm going retro mode) just throwing that out there, that you should play the other crash games first.
@Dogorilla I hope they have a demo like the ps4 had.
@Dogorilla
I somehow missed that as well. Still need to finish the insane trilogy also.
@Yosher it might be dlc some time There porting it to all consoles so why not but it would suck for those that just got it digital just for the skins like i'm probably gonna do, the coco one is the best.
@DeviousModus Australian prices usually aren't too bad when you factor in currency conversion.
@BenAV : Plus, who pays full retail price? Unless you're a chump who buys everything at EB, places like JB and Big W usually offer at least $10 below RRP, sometimes more.
Another thing worth noting is that the US price does not include tax, while our prices are inclusive of tax by default.
Crash costs 49,99€. That's more than 60$, but it includes taxes.
Great news to hear it'll run at full rez both in docked and handheld. Loved the N. Sane Trilogy, my only gripe were the slightly blurry visuals that knocked off some of the sheen.
@DeviousModus Actually the poms cop it worse. Their 45 pounds comes $80 in Aussie dollars.
I assume they will add micotransactions in future updates.
@BenAV currency conversion has nothing to do to with it at all. each region has their own set prices. you really think i enjoy paying AU$60 a pop per retro game from 35 years ago that nintendo australia keeps forcing us aussies to keep paying over & over? it becomes a joke & a pain after all these years & then people wonder why they go the illegal paths on retro games on consoles. i know that crash bandicoot triliogy for the AU PSN store is still charging $99.95 for that game & its BS tbh
@matdub It's a single-player game that's been out for months on PS4/Xbox One. The developers have insisted time and time again that they will never add microtransactions, and really, there's nothing they could do in that regard other than optional DLC skins maybe.
@DeviousModus The Switch is region free so you can always buy from other regions instead but most of the time you'll be paying more or less the same amount.
@VIIIAxel OHH Dam we set are selfs up for that one.
Why did the devs talk to Push Square about the Switch version‘s performance?!? Are there many people on a Sony website asking for that info?!?
Well, they ain’t Nintendo. For a non Nintendo production, that’s a fairly common file size. It has a lot of unique assets, like donkey Kong country.
Actually, crash is somewhat similar to what donkey Kong country would be if they made in in 3D. They even added vine swinging in this one.
The UK has always been among the most expensive countries in the World to buy video games when going by currency conversion. The price charts on Eshopprices.com have the UK, far more often than not in the bottom handful of countries. With Switzerland typically being the most expensive, sometimes by quite a margin.
However, before the 2008 recession when the Pound was much stronger, the UK appeared to be considerably more expensive. Say we were in 2006 for example,when the Pound was much stronger, around €1.50 /$2, Crash 4's £45 price mark would convert to €68 /$90. Now in 2021 it converts to €51 /$62. Yet despite the sharp drop in value of the Pound, the UK still ranks among the most expensive countries in the World to buy video games.
Thinking back to the late 80's and 90's, games were priced much the same as they are now, with some games, particularly Nintendo ones, costing even more than they do now I recall Super Mario All-stars, Super Star Wars and Street Fighter 2 costing £70+. Megadrive games were priced around £40, with big games like Sonic costing a little more. When you add inflation on, we were paying crazy prices for our games I really do wonder how I managed to buy and play so many games growing up.
All that said, I have noticed over the last year that a few indie games are being priced more fairly in the UK, often making them cheaper than the EU countries, when previously, rarely if ever did that happen. It does make me wonder if Brexit is leading to some costs being saved. If that's the case though, why is it only some publishers are reducing the UK price to reflect this saving and not all games? The big publishers won't change their pricing structure but indie games surely can.
Out of order that it’s actually more expensive on the UK eShop than in North America. In 99% of instances, if a game is $39.99 on the NA eShop, its £34.99 over here. So it’s basically a tenner more than it should be. Still want it though! 😂
[EDIT]: Just read all the previous comments about the price issue. Glad it’s not just me that’s unhappy about it. So often, I see people actually defending steep pricing in the comments on this site.
One thing to note about american prices, is that they do not include tax. That gets added on top because america!
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Holy cow that price difference is something else.
@The_Pixel_King don't just people just switch regions and pick up games from Russia or South Africa to get the cheapest price possible anyway?
@Frobodobo Even with tax added on, it's cheaper in the US. That would still be true if Crash 4 was priced at the usual level in UK/EU, relative to USA. But for whatever reason,in this case it's priced even higher.
@The_Pixel_King only but yesterday I picked up spiritfarer from Russia @£3.12* whilst it was £17.84 reduced from £23.79 on the UK site.
Tbh I still prefer to buy physical where possible, so I guess what I save via RU/SA I pay over the top on physical (sometimes).
@Clyde_Radcliffe not only UK has that issue, Euro price is €49.99
@gaga64 Push Square spoke to the Crash 4 team because an upgraded version is headed to the PS5.
We got them to ask about the Switch version's performance and published the response here on Nintendo Life.
Check our previous Crash 4 story for more info about this.
@Liam_Doolan cool, that makes sense
@The_Pixel_King it scars me that if nintendo starts wanting to charge people 70$ for games UK price will go up Wile I don't have the uk problem I feel for you man it sucks you have to pay extra.
@Liam_Doolan Neat thanks for clearing it up.
@Clyde_Radcliffe you guys got rekt with that price, but have to remind that in the US, price doesn't count tax (not that it would make the difference)
You can still change region and bought it there where it´s much cheaper
FPS & Resolution seem good for the Switch. Having never really been a fan of it (despite buying the trilogy and racing games) I may get this if it reviews well .... and just add it to the backlog of games I’ll never play
@Clyde_Radcliffe If you add 6% on to the dollar price, (this is added at the checkout in most states) and deduct our vat (less 6%) from the selling price, the gap is not so big, but still big enough.
@VIIIAxel "The developers have insisted time and time again that they will never add microtransactions"
They said the same about Nitro Fueled and look where we are now...
They added it quite a while after the release so it won't hurt sales.
I want it. Looks pretty cool to me.
@Clyde_Radcliffe
Because brexit has made things better for rich people's wallets
Hope this means the whole game is on the gamecard.
Dang, I'm going to have to free up some space!
Judging from this trailer the Switch-version looks pretty good. And the download-size is smaller then I expected (it is a game with lots of content), but I'll go for the retail-version of course.
But why do they use awful music in all the trailers? The game itself has much better music.
Is this getting a physical release outside of the US?? Still not showing up for preorder on any UK retailers I've checked 😟
I'm going physical but still need to complete Crash 2 and 3 from N Sane Trilogy first so it will be a while before I get to the latest Crash game.
Us Europeans should wait with buying this game until it drops to 30€... we’ve been waiting for a year already, another month shouldn’t be that hard
I'm guessing Activision will be cheap and put the game on a 4gb or 8gb card with the rest of the download on the consumer. Hopefully I'm wrong and the game comes complete on the cartridge. Either way I'll be buying it physical day 1.
@Einherjar The Nitro Fueled fiasco is why they've insisted the same won't happen here. Not to defend the CTRNF situation either, I was upset about it, but Toys for Bob has been very clear on the matter. And again, there's really nothing they could do for microtransactions in a single-player platformer that's already a complete game anyway, unless they add new skins or something. It's also worth noting CTR added them one month after launch. Crash 4 has been out since October and there's still nothing, so I wouldn't be worried.
@wazlon shouldnt take you to long to beat them 3 is by far the easyist one.
Europe is a continent located entirely in the Northern Hemisphere and mostly in the Eastern Hemisphere. The money here is euro. Fun fact, some european people are reading nintendolife but will soon go to another place.
I am more of a Mario and Sonic person my self. did not care for the first three games. but I must say this one does look good. hope the people who buy it, have fun with it. if there is a demo, I will play it and make up my mind then.
Wow and Gee Whiz @tedyjay !!!
Please do my home continent of North America next!!! 🌎
@michellelynn0976 Don't take the Demo into account if you're planning to make up your mind, it actually made me give up on the game, leaving an AWFUL impression of everything. I mean - if they decide to put the same demo used for preorder bonus last year...
@rushiosan. okay. thanks. i have a friend who is going to get it. I will try her copy. thanks for the heads up.
@wazlon You completed Crash 1? I found that frustratingly difficult later on! Completed 2 & 3 but still trying to muster up the courage to go back to 1 again and finish it
So I take it the physical copy actually has the game on a cart. No download required?
@tedyjay Nintendo life is a UK based website though...
I'm gonna guess we're getting an 8GB cartridge instead of a 16GB one, with a required download for around 2GB, because Activision. They wouldn't even put the Spyro Collection on a 16GB cart even though it would have fit. Effin' cheapskates.
@Kintypoo121 Yeah I managed to complete Crash 1, the new Stormy Ascent level took over 50 lives to complete, it's ridiculously hard. Was going to try and get all the platinum time trial medals but after a while I decided to give up.
@COVIDberry not in rails. It's a platformer
@matdub poms, love it, always reminds me of Shane Warne lol
Does anyone know what size cartridge they have used? I'd hope 16gb but probably guessing 8gb
@popey1980 C'arn Warnie!
