The Nintendo Switch continues to dominate the UK sales charts, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons holding onto the top spot for a second week – despite shedding almost 50% of its sales over the previous seven days. This is to be expected as sales traditionally slump at the start of the year, but the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic – combined with a fresh lockdown in the United Kingdom – has helped shift more than 260,000 boxed games in the past week.
According to our pals over at Gamesindustry.biz, Switch game sales are up over 123% compared with the same week last year, which shows just how strong the company's grip is on the UK market right now.
The evergreen Mario Kart 8 Deluxe rose one place to No.2, while Just Dance 2021 rose two places to claim third place (amazingly, almost 90% of that game's physical sales so far have been on Nintendo Switch). Ring Fit Adventure jumped back into the top 10 thanks to a 24% increase in sales, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe rose one place to 9th position. It wasn't all good news for Mario, however, as the time-limited Super Mario 3D All-Stars dropped 42% of its sales compared to the previous week and falls out of the top 10, landing in 11th place.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart for the week ending January 9th::
Last Week | This Week | Title |

1 | 1 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |

5 Switch titles in the top 10, may as well be 6 considering 90% of Just Dance sales were on Switch.
Another brilliant week for the console that could!
See guys, Animal Crossing will never die.
Animal Crossing about to beat Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for the number one spot on the Switch, no wonder Nintendo never lowers the prices for their games, they're quite literally endless profits.
Surprised to see the high sales come out of the UK of all places, I thought people there only played COD, FIFA and GTA. Then again, I'm from Australia, we only play with boomerangs and didgeridoos.
COD, FIFA and GTA are big everywhere
I've really started enjoying Animal Crossing again since the new lockdown, as much as I did in the Spring and Summer. It really is the perfect game for these weird times. I dunno, going on it just provides such a nice sense of familiarity and order in a time when every day feels unpredictable and the routine of going to work is missing (I'm working from home) I can see why the series has been linked to good mental health.
Who is buying gta every week, incredible. Even though I have it on xbox and ps4, I would love it on the go on switch. I know its not to be ......
@HotGoomba___Rebrand,
It will end up as the best selling game on the Switch alongside Mario kart, funny how some feel Nintendo should focus on niche games like Metroid and F-Zero.
@TheFullAndy
But but the Nintendo switch has no games eyeroll
I wonder if we will ever seen some new DLC for Mario Kart? I'd happily plunk down $20 for a bunch of new tracks.
Welcome to Animal Crossing...you’ll never leave...
I was starting to think I'd clicked into the wrong article until I saw the FIFA, GTA, and COD listings. Pretty impressive results considering the region.
Brilliant, I love to see it.
@Varkster I'd trade boomerangs and didgeridoos any day for beer, waffles, french fries, chocolate... "We", where I come from, are only known for bad "foods", of which i literally like none. Is it true you also ride kangaroos and call everyone "mite"?
Been trying to get hold of the Animal Crossing themed console, like gold dust at the moment.
Looking for a pay later scheme.
@Varkster It is indeed surreal seeing how the gaming landscape has changed in not too many years. Which is not to say that COD and FIFA have fallen out favour with the British public, but the fact that Animal Crossing is up there with them - above them! - is staggering to me.
I still remember telling a FIFA-fanatical friend that I was playing Animal Crossing back in the GameCube era, and his look of utter bemusement as I explained it was a game where you pottered around a tiny village picking fruit and chatting to endearingly absurd anthropomorphic animals.
He didn’t really get the appeal (and given my explanation, I can’t really blame him). But clearly plenty of people now do.
Maybe I was wrong. Maybe I did feed him a very enticing portrayal of the game, which is why it’s so popular now. It just took over 10 years for word to get out.
@Bizaster It's like GTA V's neverending success.
Can't wait for Grand Theft Auto: New Leaf, full of crime, cuteness, and the N-word.
I hope I don't offend anyone by mentioning that word without actually saying it.
i meant nickelodeon.
Never thought I’d see the day cod and fifa were below Nintendo games in the uk 😱🥳🥳🥳
@HotGoomba___Rebrand
Don't you dare say that rated 18+ game blended with Animal Crossing New Leaf !
@Varkster
Boomerangs and didgeridoos ?
Are you ready for Ty Tasmanian Tiger games ?
I am curious by the people shocked by the UK charts, Nintendo has been crushing it in the UK with the Switch for the past couple of years.
The Switch has just been a smash hit and long may it continue.
Good to see physical media holding up through Corona.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is still selling like hot cakes? Why don't I ever hear people talk about this game when most of the players have played this?
I'm beginning to thing those new lockdown tiers are sponsored by Nintendo so they would sell more games. The virus was probably engineered by a bat working for Nintendo!
what we need is Mario kart ULTIMATE.
the same way smash bro is made, packed with a ***** load of tracks and guest caracters.
@Rhaoulos
like the low educated people started to spread conspiracy theories on internet.
well epidemic events are from all time my friend, especialy when the world has too many humans.
wars and human faillures will alway be forgotten, even the fact humans alway try to find a source to blame someone or something. that last is in our nature in times of dispear.
@PALversusNTSC I guess high education doesn't teach how to enjoy humour (I suppose you have at least a PhD to mention low education), but you are right to assume someone's education since it is much easier than using a brain.
