UK physical chart data is now in for the week ending 23rd January, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons has finally been knocked off the top spot after three weeks leading the pack.
The Switch exclusive has lost out to Square Enix's new release, Hitman 3, which incidentally sold best on PS5. Switch's Cloud Version of the game is naturally absent from the listings owing to the fact that it only released digitally.
Elsewhere, more Nintendo exclusives can be found in and around the top ten, including the likes of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in third, Ring Fit Adventure in seventh, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars in eleventh.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart:
Last Week | This Week | Title |
---|---|---|
- | 1 | Hitman 3 |
1 | 2 | Animal Crossing: New Horizons |
2 | 3 | Mario Kart 8 Deluxe |
12 | 4 | Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales |
7 | 5 | Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War |
4 | 6 | Grand Theft Auto V |
10 | 7 | Ring Fit Adventure |
3 | 8 | Just Dance 2021 |
5 | 9 | Minecraft (Switch) |
6 | 10 | FIFA 21 |

Even my Nan owns a copy of Animal Crossing and she doesn’t have a Switch and died in the early 90s. Those sales are phenomenal.
It seems so weird that the UK has become a Nintendo nation. Only downside is the lack of originality. Do people scroll down a list of potential purchases, then go back to the top and just buy another copy of Mario Kart 8D?
Hitman 3 would’ve been popular because it looks free, but you have to buy the full game.
@Krull A good game is a good game. Seeing as shed loads of new Switches are still being sold (presumably the majority to people who have never owned a Switch before, and probably not a WiiU either) it makes sense to buy the best games for it. Mario Kart 8 is one of those best games.
Reminds me that the Hitman series just celebrated its 20th anniversary this past November.
Great to see it in better shape than ever!
If it's possible, I wish digital versions were included in the charts, when such a significant portion of game purchases are digital nowadays. Only seeing sales of physical versions doesn't give the complete picture.
It's so weird that an almost 4 year old Wii U port is still on spot 3
It's just a shame that they never did DLC for this game
@mariomaster96 they did. Mario kart 8 got fantastic DLC and was priced great. The deluxe was the definitive edition with all dlc included
How relevant are charts anymore? If they don't count digital sales, that makes them horribly inaccurate.
All of us WiiU owners need to accept the possibility that we won't get a new Mario kart until the next Nintendo system comes out.
Ring fit will never die.
@WahooTime I'm well aware that they did DLC for MK8...
I'm talking about more DLCs for MK8DX cause the last time we got new tracks was almost 6 years ago (the second DLC) which is a very long time
UK charts are weird right now. No immortals but gta v and minecraft? These are NEW purchases? I am so confused how that many people don't have minecraft
The sales momentum of Hitman 3 is primarily driven by PS5 owners. I imagine they're hungry for proper AAA games to play on their expensive new hardware.
Anyway, I just have to resign myself to the idea that we won't get a new MK game this gen. Not when MK8 is still performing this well.
@doctorhino GTA V and Minecraft are eternal, dude. Copies of those game will keep selling even after nuclear war/climate change/disease/whatever wipes us all out one day and the mutated cockroaches take over.
@Ralizah I've accepted we won't get a new MK until the next Nintendo console comes out. I'm not happy about it, but it's reality. Lol
@mariomaster96 sorry if I misunderstood.
I didn’t think they would put out more DLC after getting out the definitive version which included the Wii u DLC which was MK8 deluxe
Eh, all good things must come to an end
@doctorhino @Krull I don't know about Minecraft but part of the reason GTA V and Mario Kart 8 are always in the charts is they're usually bundled with new console purchases here (usually with a saving on the games normal cost) GAME push these bundles hard.
Apparently only 800 sales between Animal Crossing and Hitman 3 which is surprising considering Hitman 3 is multiplatform and the final installment of that trilogy of games so still impressive for Animal Crossing. Overall another great week for Switch.
The effects of the small PS5 restock shows that when Sony can provide enough consoles into the UK market the charts will be much more even between Sony and Nintendo.
Xbox's race is already run I think, destined for distant third in the UK (and anywhere that isn't the Americas really). Too early to call but I am doing it anyway. Microsoft are struggling to find a way to push people onto gamepass without annoying them. Something they spectacularly failed to do at the weekend with the price hike of Live Gold and quick reversal of said hike after the justified backlash. Maybe having some worthwhile first party or exclusive games at the launch of their new console would have helped, weird strategy for launching a new gen of consoles I know....
Uk charts don’t count for toffee!
The buying teams behind these numbers don’t know what to buy or what they are buying most the time.
@Lord
What are you on about?
@Clyde_Radcliffe oh ok, I was wondering about gta v as well, that makes sense. That one probably sticks out more since it's Mature and old. At least kids can play the other 2.
Agent 47 deserves the #1 spot. The game is lit.
@Ralizah I think you are referring to MK11, not MK8? Also, you won’t get another entry until after Injustice 3, so don’t hold your breath.
@ClaytThaGreat why? It doesn't make much sense considering that we did get a Mortal Kombat game. He's referring to Mario Kart 8 on Switch, which is the Wii U version with DLC.
I'm surprised Nintendo Switch games are selling well at all in the UK. I get the impression British people don't care much for Nintendo.
@Ralizah sadly, I am slowly accepting this too. I get the business aspect of it. But I also think a new entry would outpace AC and sell new systems. Nintendo is in a great position, but it is at the expense of the loyal fans.
@DrDaisy
Been going on for months if not years now so I am shocked at your suprise!
@TheFullAndy Even the ones who run Nintendo sites like this don't seem too interested in Nintendo.
Hitman 2 was a commercial flop, selling 90% (!!!) less than Hitman Absolution at launch, so its good to see Hitman 3 sell more at launch, though the raw numbers aren't that big.
@DrDaisy
Well now I really don't know what you are on about and don't care to find out either so I will leave it at that!
@doctorhino right now? GTA and Minecraft haven't left the charts since 2013.
@MaxiPareja US charts is all games that came out somewhat recently.... and Mario Kart 8. Would think you guys would be similar unless the charts are being screwed up by bundles like the other person explained.
@TheFullAndy Then why did you reply?
Have you seen the feed on this site lately? Roughly a quarter of the articles here aren't even about Nintendo.
