During a New Year live stream, Bandai Namco Tekken 7 director Katsuhiro Harada mentioned how he was quite possibly working on the Japanese company's "most costly development project" ever.
Harada himself can't even believe the higher-ups within the company gave it the green light. Here's the translation, courtesy of Gematsu:
“Well, honestly I think this might be the most costly development project in Bandai Namco history. I think its incredible that the higher-ups approved of this. Well, the approval has passed, its just that due to the coronavirus, we haven’t really been able to properly start the project.”
While a new Tekken game or another fighter would be an obvious guess, the veteran developer mentions how he doesn't think he'll ever do a fighting game other than Tekken, and notes how he's currently working on games that aren't ever fighters.
“I’m developing things other than fighting games. I don’t think I’ll ever do any other fighting game other than Tekken. But I won’t say what this project is at this point.”
So, any guesses about what this project might be? Oh, and if you're reading Mr. Harada, we're still hoping to see a Tekken 7 port for Nintendo Switch.

Can't wait to see whats in store for us.
Costly to make doesn't necessarily mean it'll be a good game. Also, chances are this won't come to Switch or at least not without the graphics toned down. It's high cost probably means this project will have very detailed graphics and or advanced physics, something the Switch will struggle with.
Wow, got to say I’m really looking forward to this Galaga dating sim.
Not a fighting game? Not interested.
Bamco really needs to port more of their fighters to Switch. That’s one thing I hate about them being partial smash bros devs. I feel like whatever cut they get from that allows them to ignore the switch for non anime games. Heck I would take old games. Port TT2 from wiiu, give us Soul Calibur IIHD but give us something.
So no Switch version, then.
Most epensive ever huh. This peakes my interest.
I hope i don't come across as an A-hole here, but when was the last time Bandai Namco gave a game a proper budget? It feels like ever since 2011-2012 they've all been made on a miniscule budget.
Tekken on the Switch though?
@LEGEND_MARIOID Even Wii U had one! The Switch has like zero proper 3D fighters... There's such an obvious and huge gap in the market.
Seeing as Tekken isn’t on the Switch and the “level” the current gen is at (PS5 & XBSeX), this project will highly likely won’t be coming to the Switch.
Well holy cow, we really are about to get Ninja Gaiden and Hayabusa in Smash, thanks to the reception of DMCV and Bayonetta 2/3. That's what I take away from the expense plus Vergeben calling Sephiroth.
Even more expensive than Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man's obscenely extravagant wedding?!
Whoa...
Probably something that involves a lot of licensing like an anime game
@CerberusAzdin not another flop like jump force. Most license games end up horrible cash grubs.
He’s Tekken’ too much money?
@elias84631 who knows, sometimes it’s the licensing for the soundtracks that cost a bomb. It would be great if they brought the Super Robot Wars franchise to the west but again, that would be an extremely expensive endeavour due to copyrights
Expensive or not, it just needs to be good and completed. It could be expensive and still end up like Cyberpunk 2077.
@Tourtus
The Past shows that too much Money can hinder Companies to make good Games, because they lose the Focus.
Restrictions also leaded very often to creative Ideas.
Whatever it is I doubt the switch will ever see it. Or tekken. @Arugula Or ridge racer but that stings the most since they completely abandoned it. I'm playing it on my psp right now that's how much I'm wanting it!
It might be a project to develop an in-house game engine for next-gen systems. I know they’ve used Unreal Engine a lot recently and have had some struggles with it, so perhaps they want something they understand end-to-end and can customise how they want?
Personally though I just want more Ridge Racer and Time Crisis.
@Arugula Couldn't agree more!
Erm...Tekken isn't relevant to Switch. And I would put money on 'the most expensive project ever' isn't either lol. Sounds like next gen ambition (marketing) to me.
We are indeed...
Really really hope this would be the year of TEKKEN on Switch.
Then it wouldn’t be coming to the switch then.
So announcing that they got approval to start a new game is major news now....
bandai doesn't care for the switch. they only released last gen games or ports of vita games (the sao games) on switch alongside maybe one or two true "current gen" games and they weren't big projects still. I'd say bandai is done "supporting" the switch. They now have deals with microsoft and apparently they'd rather release their jrpgs there than make an effort and try to release at least one of them on switch.
Ever since Street Fighter x Tekken, Namco has had the rights to produce their version... Much like the Capcom vs SNK properties. I would love to see that become a reality.
Since when has Bandai developed a good massive-budget game? Genuinely curious BTW.
I am always excited to hear about a new game, even if it is from a company I don't have a ton of experience with! I am really curious what this could be.
@westman98 I’ve been playing Code Vein and it’s really quite good. The Tekken games are also big-budget and are great along with Soul Calibur VI.
Always thought the Tekken fighters were lame compared to KI
@Tourtus not necessarily it could just have a very expensive marketing budget.
@Snatcher I am hoping for a a Project X Zone. I never played one and the roster seems impressive. If it is true then please put SONIC!
Whatever it is we won't even hear what it is until at least 2024 so why even care about it
@nessisonett
Oh yeah, I forgot about Tekken. Yeah, that is definitely big budget. Souls Caliber too, I suppose.
Genuinely curious to see what this "massive-budget" Bandai game is. If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably some brand new big open-world game, as that is typically the most expensive type of game to develop.
@westman98 They already have Scarlet Nexus coming out which is a big budget action game. This could hopefully be a Ninja Gaiden reboot.
@edgedino That's true as well, I heard the majority of Destiny's development costs were spent on marketing.
@KingBowser86 "Ninja Gaiden and Hayabusa"? Isn't Hayabusa the name of the ninja in Ninja Gaiden?...
@Ryu_Niiyama Considering how poorly Tekken 7 ran on Xbox, and that they never cared enough to make it not look like a blurry 480p mess of a game, I'm not sure ignoring Switch has much to do with Smash and has more to do with their archaic broken engines not really working on anything but PC and Playstation.
@NEStalgia Doesn’t excuse the rest of the library though. If nothing else TT2. But I do think smash plays a bit into them not pushing to succeed on Switch. Speculation of course but if I were thinking pure business and I leased out my Switch dev team to work on a system heavy hitter (smash) I would be less inclined to try to pick up stray sells (bamco’s personal IP) from an already niche genre that has the majority of its fan base on other systems. And since BC is a thing there is no reason to rush out updated versions for the twins either. Let the money make itself and less risk.
Of course I only care because that is my favorite genre. I don’t actually expect anything.
@Ryu_Niiyama I'm reading that and thinking "Bamco = 2K East." Not far from the truth, either....
@NEStalgia I have a love/hate relationship with Bamco. I’m a soul calibur junkie (except V) so I want them to shower ports on everything under the sun. Yet they make decisions which I am sure are sound for them (they aren’t taking major losses like some other devs or making radical but ultimately costly decisions like capcom) but leave me left in the cold even as a multi system owner.
If you look at it they are sitting firmly on x86 for their personal IPs but I bet the anime ones are required to go to every viable system. Hence switch ports.
Ninja Gaiden reboot for PS5 e Xbox Series X? Bandai Namco define expensive budget? $100 milions dolars? $250milions dolars for your ysterious game?
