Today sees the launch of The Survivalists on Switch, the latest game from Team17 and a follow-up to the much-loved The Escapists.
While not a direct sequel as such, The Survivalists is described as being a "part of The Escapists' universe". It has players heading out to their very own procedurally-generated islands, where they're free to explore, craft, and train troupes of monkeys in order to survive against the harsh environments. Seriously, we're not making that last part up.
A new trailer has been released today to mark the game's launch, so make sure to give that a quick watch up above. We also have some screenshots and a list of key features for you:
Key Features:
- Play together and survive: Up to four players can join forces to explore the world of The Survivalists, helping each other out to stay alive
- Get crafty and be inventive: Various items great and small can be crafted, from weapons to tools and buildings to keep your crew sheltered
- Automate with monkeys: Enlist the help of monkeys for a number of tasks, including protecting your group and gathering resources
- Curiosity is rewarded: Players are encouraged to explore their surroundings, where they’ll encounter dangerous wildlife, mythical enemies, and tantalising secrets.
If you're wanting to download the game today, you'll find it waiting for you on the eShop for £21.99 / $24.99. We're working hard to bring you a review of the game, too, so feel free to keep an eye out for that if you'd prefer to wait for our verdict.
Have you played The Escapists? Are you looking forward to a new game in the same universe? Let us know down below.

Looks like a modern day Survival Kids/Lost in Blue kind of game. Definitely will try this out.
Going to wait for a review, but I'll probably end up picking this up. Hopefully, sometime this weekend.
Same screen multiplayer ?
Animal Crossing Doomed Island (with humans!) Looks a solid game to be honest!
@NotoriousWhiz A demo came out a few weeks ago so you could try it for yourself.
@Shamrock I think it's more like Don't Starve meets Stardew Valley. Apparently, without permadeath, for which I thank the devs.
Had it on preorder on the e-Shop, will give it a whirl this weekend.
@gurtifus sadly no ☹️. Online only, and no cross platform either
@ilh Nice. Good to know. Any idea if the demo progress carries over?
I got one the Escapist games on sale and had no idea what was happening, or the point of the game.
@NotoriousWhiz Don't know, sorry. Only played it for a few minutes as the text was too small for my current TV setup so I don't even know how far you can get in it. I have been looking forward to the game since it was announced so I'll be giving it another go in a few weeks when I rearrange my room.
Might play it, it's free on arcade.
Looks pretty cool..
I’ll probably pick this up once I’ve finished with Hades. Who wants to play online multiplayer with me?
Had a quick session on it last night, and I found it quite fun. I'm struggling to manage my inventory (almost always full), but I've sussed out how to utilise the monkeys now(I befriended my second one during this session) - a bit fiddly though.
My base is a bit of a mess though, but I had been mainly concentrating on exploring the cooking/crafting/building tech trees, which require you to place, for example, a single wood fence to unlock a new recipe.
I'm finding the bow useful as well, and, before I finished for the night, I was able to craft a sail for my raft, so I can do a bit of exploring.
I'm looking forward to seeing what else you can do.
@Grandiajet They don’t explain the games the best so the best thing to do is find an online tutorial or something explaining how it works. Maybe watch someone play the game.
@RPGamer Unlikely. I went to GameStop as soon as I heard a release date. I had to pre-order it. Kind of irritated that they didn't give more of a heads up. Still waiting for my copy.
