Update: Overwatch's free trial is also heading to the west!
Original Article (Tue 6th Oct, 2020 14:00 BST): Overwatch will temporarily be made free-to-play for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers in Japan later this month, as part of an ongoing benefit of the service in Nintendo's home country.
Subscribers will be able to get stuck into the game for free from 13th - 20th October, and even those enjoying free trials of Nintendo Switch Online qualify. Save data from this free version of the game can be carried over to the full version, which will incidentally be discounted by 25% until 27th October (thanks, Japanese Nintendo).
In the past, games like Pokkén Tournament DX, Fire Emblem Warriors, Dead Cells and Celeste have also been offered up in full for a week in Japan, with full-game discounts being put in place to tempt players into a purchase.
It's worth pointing out that if you happen to have a Japanese account on your Switch with an active Japanese Switch Online subscription, you can enjoy this free version of Overwatch from anywhere in the world.
Would you like to see more full-game trials like this in the west? Let us know in the usual place.

Tracer in SMASH. I can only hope
Yes. I would like to be able to trial every game for a week before deciding to buy it.
@Lordplops
A lot of games can be beaten fully within a week, that would kill their sales.
@RupeeClock did you think I was serious?
It should go free to play permanently at this point, especially on switch, queues are getting a bit long.
@Blooper987 are there any gun oriented characters in smash as I thought it was a melee game and tracer wouldn't suit that, though her rewind ability would be cool, would use it every time someone fell off the map lol
this game is so good, really... The queues on switch is the only issue, the rest the best fps I ever played
@Valhalla91 well snake joker Samus ZSS mega man and many more have types of guns. It isn’t an exclusively close-rages fighter. Min Min is purposely long ranged mega man uses almost exclusively projectiles. Tracer would fit in really well.
@Valhalla91 @Blooper987 the question would be if Tracer would be the best character.
I know she is the headline character for Overwatch, but I think Genji and D.Va would also be good candidates and there are other melee characters.
In fact, the perfect Overwatch character might be where you have 3-4 (or 6) of them as one character and it switches based on the move set you are using. Overwatch is a team game after all and they are the members of Overwatch.
@Kienda that would be amazing. Certainly not picturing 5 or 6 characters. But switching between 3 different ones for different move sets could be really cool. I think if it was a single character tracer and D.Va are the only two who bring uniqueness and recognizability into smash
@teixeiras for me at least the queues seem to have only gone up in the last couple of weeks, before that I was in within a few seconds.
I can't stand Tracer or Genji so would rather not have them in Smash. To say they're so weak healthwise they are far harder to kill than anybody else and will rinse you in a couple of seconds.
@ilh I agree that it is just the last few weeks. Why is that all of a sudden though?
Never had to do any waiting fir over a year.
Honest to gosh a masterpiece of a game. Too bad Blizzard owns it...
blizzard launch it on switch, at worst time ever... All the anger in the air, and they release the game
That's not "going free to play". That's having a limited trial.
Those limited free play are awesome, its nice to try the whole game for a week. Been enjoying those services. This gives me a chance to try games i would at first woouldnt buy, the full game gives me the chance to think about purchasing it. After.
I cant even find a game online.
The free trial is happening in the UK too. It's showing up on the eShop, start date 13/10/2020.
Great!
I'll definitely try it on my Japanese accout
@VenomousAlbino yup, it's on the News channel too saying 50% off until the 25th rather than 25% off as for the Japanese.
@RupeeClock OG XBOX used to have demos of almost every game. I spent way more in those days because I knew what I was getting! I pass on so many games cause I’m iffy on it...
@Yanina Not sure what's changed. Doesn't help that if you get in to a game that doesn't have enough players you all get kicked out to queue again, surely it's a lot easier to find 1 person for a game than to find a game for 11 people.
@Big_Fudge I love your profile pic (so much I stole it). It's cool and rare that I find another fan of one of my favorite games.
FYI its also been confirmed for NA as well
