The new compilation of Mario classics shifted more than 210,000 physical copies in just three days to get there, comfortably beating last week's number one, Ring Fit Adventure. It also earned a first-place position in the UK charts this week.

Hasn't anyone told Japan about the all-digital future?
Great sales for the Switch and Mario.
It barely counts when it's based on Nintendo threatening to not make anymore.
Nintendo just keeps trucking on in their home country, nobody can stop their wild ride.
Great news for Nintendo. This should help them make more old wii, n64 and gamecube ‘ports’.
@doctorhino I wonder how much of an impact that has on it. I would imagine that the vast majority of people buying these things don't really know about it stopping being sold in a few months. The more casual audience likely doesn't keep up with any of this news. They probably just see a Mario collection on the shelf and buy it cause it's Mario.
The game would have sold this much at launch regardless of it being a limited release.
Its available for 6 months not 6 weeks like.
My copy just arrived yesterday! Not that I am in Japan...
@-Green- Didn't preorders sell out everywhere stateside because of it? I can't imagine it was much different in Japan.
I guess there are more now because I'm seeing it available at a lot of online retailers, but when I checked a week ago it was still sold out.
@-Green-
I agree. It was gonna sell well whether it is limited-time release or not.
Gasp! Limited quote and quote release of arguable three of the best games ever in hd at a affordable price does well! No joke these games are fantastic with galaxy being my favorite ever you should pick it up if you haven't.
Older news, but looks like more Ring Fit supplies have arrived.
@TheFullAndy yeah I'll have to agree with you there but it isnt a bad sales tactic although not consumer friendly.
Doesn't sound like that's too much, I expected more
@COVIDberry somebody still has me to tell about it))
I completely forgot I was playing sunshine after i started Hades
@COVIDberry
Yeah especially given the size of Japanese homes physical products’ storage space is very limited.
@Crockin That's why I'm holding off on getting Hades
Does this mean we will see more retro compilations from Nintendo in the near future?
@COVIDberry And that is a future I never want to see in my lifetime
Launch / LTD retail sales of all 3D Mario games:
> Super Mario 64: 162,111 / 1.647 million
> Super Mario Sunshine: 280,610 / 790,000
> Super Mario 64 DS: 120,062 / 1.232 million
> Super Mario Galaxy: 256,341 / 1.026 million
> Super Mario Galaxy 2: 337,569 / 1.047 million
> Super Mario 3D Land: 344,698 / 2.112 million
> Super Mario 3D World: 106,967 / 602,000
> Super Mario Odyssey: 512,000 / 2.120 million
> Super Mario 3D All-Stars: 210,136 / ???
Adding digital sales should put 3D All-Stars' launch sales in the 300,000-350,000 unit range, well above Galaxy and Sunshine's launch sales, though well behind that of Mario Odyssey.
Good for them. I'm certainly enjoying the release! Hoping for more classic collections to be released like this in the future. Pokemon, Zelda, Fire Emblem...
@doctorhino ...It's not like Nintendo is holding people's family hostage and this game acts as the ransom. People are free to buy it or not, no obligation.
@westman98 There's an issue with those calcs. 3D All-Stars ran out of stock, otherwise it would have sold more, while (as far as I can recall) no other Mario game on that list was understocked at launch. So the digital ratio is likely higher than you estimated.
>5000 3DS vs. <2000 PS4
PS4 is dead
I know the Xbox One sales are poor in Japan but I'm still impressed that the One X has sold almost the same as the One S there.
@Max_the_German Well I mean who would buy a new ps4 2 months before the release of the ps5
you either wait for the ps5 or buy a used ps4 cause i'm sure many people will sell their ps4 now
3DS sales had a good boost due to the announcement of the end of its production.
It's interesting to note that in Japan, 3D Mario games generally do not sell as well as 2D games.
The exception was on Switch, where Odyssey sold much better than NSMBU DX (which, even so, was a 6-year-old port).
@C-Threep I accused them of causing unnecessary FOMO, not making people buy the game by force.
@link3710
From what I'm seeing, retail copies are fairly plentiful in Japan.
It's the west that's having retail supply issues, which makes sense as Mario games are far more popular outside of Japan than in Japan. In fact, Japan may be the only region where Mario 3D All-Stars won't be the fastest-selling 3D Mario platformer ever.
@Max_the_German in that case XBox was never alive.
@COVIDberry thank God they haven't Physical is ownership
@doctorhino Agree. And who buys ps4 and xbox games/consoles now that next gen is here any day now
Offerup is pretty sweet right now.
There's 13 copies on just 5 scrolls, the lowest price is 80, the highest is $160.
@doctorhino How is it Nintendo's fault if folks desire a product and worry themselves about purchasing the product? I'm not being rude, I genuinely don't understand.
Lay's Chips currently have limited edition bags and flavors. But for that, it's just business as usual.
The fact that it sold that much means Super Mario 3D All-Stars won't be limited anymore (the physical version at least). Once the limited period is over, we could always buy the physical edition from anywhere in the world. Also scalpers are now lowering the price on the game.
@HobbitGamer How is it hard to understand that announcing a game as a limited time offer, buy it now, is not consumer friendly? It's a 60 buck mario game, not a 4 buck bag of chips that tastes differently.
What about people who don't own a switch now, or want to save up for other games? Too bad, it's your only chance so if you don't buy it you miss out.
@doctorhino I'm not saying I don't hear you, I just can't seem to empathize with the outrage some have over it. I guess I just don't place must importance in it. I wanted it (more than a comparable product of a similar price), I could afford it, so I bought it. Maybe I'm just not concerned with a company's offerings always being 'consumer friendly'. I don't really view any producer as 'looking out' for my interests. I buy a product, use the product, and that's it.
I wanted the Mario collection, I bought it, and I like it. shrug
@HobbitGamer Your question was: How is it Nintendo's fault if folks desire a product and worry themselves about purchasing the product?
My answer is because not everyone wants to buy it right now, or is in a position to. And the fact that it's limited means they do have to worry about buying it now or not being able to buy it. You clearly do and did, but it's still their fault in how they market the game's availability.
I mean just because you don't care cause you bought it and you're good doesn't mean it's still not unnecessary and didn't lead to increased sales of physical copies to either ebay off or keep sealed.
Vote with your wallet... I have failed 😭 damn you cute little plumber!
@mariomaster96 or pick up a cheap new PS4 from a shop shifting some stock for the incoming PS5.. that could explain some of the sales
@kaiofelipe This is generally, but not always, true globally
@doctorhino Well. You have to worry about buying it before March. Not now
For all the people complaining it’s only for sale for a limited time...there’s still PLENTY of copies at all the stores I’ve been to.
@COVIDberry lel, Japan's so far ahead technology wise it's not even close
@COVIDberry There's no such thing as an all digital future otherwise we would had been eating or traveling in our sleep by now.
