Here's a bit from our review about this particular version, which we gave eight out of ten stars:
We’d give this one a high recommendation to anyone that hasn’t yet experienced this gem in some form; there’s plenty here to make this a game that’s worth your time. If you’ve experienced the game before, however, we’d advise that you think hard about how badly you want it for your Switch.
Will you be taking up this offer, or do you already own this game on the Switch? Tell us down below.

Come on Liam
@shaneoh Haha, Tom? Fixed!
@Liam_Doolan
Fixed too
Damn, should have pretended that was deliberate
That is a pretty good price for those that haven't played this gem yet.
Just got this once I noticed the sale! Eyed this a lot on DS, but never got it. Finally took the plunge though after hearing so many good things.
Hey cool! But, it's pronounced 'Tw-WOOOHH-Wee'
;chuckle
I really didn't like this game. The story was typical Squenix overcomplicated garbage with ATROCIOUS controls. Never been so let down based on reviews.
Usually not into JRPG's but I am kinda interested, planning on just playing it on a Switch Lite if I get it. Never played the DS version before.
Had my eye on this one for a while, but my interest died when I heard the game has horrible controls.
Can anyone who owns this on Switch advise if they patched the game post-launch to improve the control scheme?
@Maulbert
DS Version is where it's at. Switch version is garbo.
@BLD I played the DS version. It sucked. I haven't touched it on Switch.
I was interested in this game on DS just because people said it was great and also difficult to find at a good price, and then it released on Switch in a version with messed up controls. Not even at half price I'd buy it. This price on DS would be different.
Best version of the game if played in handheld mode.
Fun gameplay, awesome and huge selection of full-length music, and the story is fantastic. Plus the graphics look great in HD.
The DS version was my favorite game on the system, but I'm sorry, I just like this version more. Controlling Neku was always the most fun part for me, and having that as the focus was fine IMO. It's also just more accessible to newcomers due to not having to control two characters at once.
If you hear that the controls are bad, it's referring to the Joy-Con controls. If you only play in TV mode, then fair enough, but I was fine playing this exclusively in handheld. I did the same thing for VOEZ.
I bought the physical Switch version when GameStop had it used on sale for $21 a month ago; mostly for novelty. Got the original DS version and prefer that over the final mix, mainly because of controls.
This should be the starting price for a 13 year old game. I bought it on discount half that price on apple store, still expensive for an iOS game
Yeah I don't think 25 quid is worth it for a DS game.
Heard how good the ds one was but never found in shops mite give this a go xx
Fantastic game this.
I really want to try it on Switch, but I have the DS version, keep on reading that that's the best version, and won't pay anywhere above €5 to try if I like it enough on Switch. I mean, for that same €25 I've bought plenty of games combined at great sales, and adding exactly €0 for a couple of hundred hours Warface, Asphalt 9, Warframe, Dauntless,... It's not like there's not enough to play on the Switch that I didn't play yet or that's just at a way better price... But if someday they give it a massive sale and/or price cut, I'm still interested.
I scratched my DS to bits playing the original. Shame the controls aren’t better for this version or I’d give it a shot.
@Fandabidozi You can use your finger and play the Tablet Mode. That mode was fun, reminded me of playing on the DS.
Had this classic since launch (my first eShop preorder back then, IIRC), but it's even more of a bargain now. While the DS version retains some authenticity in terms of partner control, Switch version offers its own, plus the perks like co-op outside the handheld mode and new story content. No, the controls aren't "horrible", personal experience here testifies that it's every bit as subjective as the "analogue trigger" buzz some folks keep pushing at Switch while living in the same world where Gran Turismo was on PS1 and PSP.
In other topics, "13 year old games should have 13 year old prices divided by 13 at least" club can go fan themselves - but hey, eBay search just DID yield me an apparently boxless DS card starting at the same 20 bucks, so by all means, folks, bid away. No jab at people like @Shambo who already have the DS version and/or don't find inexplicable shame in civilly admitting that they just have higher eShop priorities fitting into the sum discussed. Without stooping to asinine implications about expiry terms for video games.
This port is really great but I would recommend playing it exclusively in handheld mode with a stylus. The joycon controls can be frustrating at times which can taint the experience. The touch screen controls however are responsive and engaging. This is my favourite version of the game to play portable
I've been waiting for this to be on a good sale. Full price seemed way too expensive.
The controls in the game are fine.
Havnt had a problem playing touchscreen.
Controller play not recommended, but wasnt the original control scheme to begin with
I got this at launch and the handheld touch controls are great. Didn't spend much time with the docked controls, but it's nice that there's co op if you play that way
The ds version was better by a lot
I always hear about this game but don't really know much about it. What would it compare to? SMT games? Final Fantasy, Dragon Queat etc? Or is this some kind of rhythm game?
Enjoyed the original on DS quite a lot, might be one of my favourite games actually.
Got the Switch version and played it in co-op with my little bro and we had a great time, I'm glad he got to experience it too! Don't know what people are talking about with the controls, worked fine for me and my bro. Amazingly the Switch version is still at 1.0.0 and has never had any updates.
I eyed this over and over again on the DS but never did jump for it; I read the controls were pretty touch-centric, something I try to avoid too much of on my DS systems after going a little overboard with my original system. XD
I've picked up a physical Switch copy of this game, but have yet to play it. So far I've gained the impression that the touch controls are where it's at, and that the docked controls should be avoided like a Brie Larson comment section here.
@Dazzle
DS version just had far better controls IMO. It's difficult to wrap your head around at first, but trying to control 1 character on each screen is the entire difficulty of the game. The enemies are designed to work on both screens, the bosses especially were neutered to work on one screenz removing a lot of cool things they did.
I'd go so far as to say that having to care about more than just one screen was a deliberate example of tying the gameplay into the main character's arc of caring about others. But you don't need to care or pay much attention to anyone else now. They're glorified summons now, power-ups.
I really cannot overstate how different not having 2 screens (or at least not trying to emulate that somehow) makes this game. It is basically an entirely different battle system, for the worse.
Have to say I way prefer the DS version. The controls are perfect and the two screens are why it works. The tablet style gameplay of this and the iOS version just didn’t sit right with me, it takes away a core part of the gameplay and also messes up loads of pins by making you use your partner when you’re trying to do something else.
Hoping this knocks down the physical price, this isnt the kind of game I want digital.
@fatleon5 Plot-wise (and slightly style-wise) it secretly ends up being a Persona/SMT game (whoops) but the battle system's pretty unique so it's hard to really compare it to anything else.
Came in here to ask if the Switch version is superior enough to the DS version to justify acquiring, but going by the comments of people well familiar with both, it's not.
Thank you all for chiming in and saving me from wasting my hard-earned money.
@rushiosan Because I already have a DS copy that works perfectly fine, and like I said, people on this site familiar with both, and professional and user reviews on Metacritic indicate that the Switch version is just the mobile phone version with controls inferior to the DS version.
Why pay $25 for a worse-controlling version of a game already own, to the point that the controls significantly change gameplay, just for prettier graphics? Especially if the superior form of control requires me to play in handheld mode, further rendering any advantages the Switch version has more moot?
Agree with @spideyroxas - Thankfully I have a stylus for my switch. Bought this for first time yesterday and loving it, but I think the stylus is essential to make the controls feel fluid and Ds-esque. So all is not lost with that simple solution
i'm interested in getting this. but, i'm not quite sure what version i want to go with.
@Shambo In other words, what they really need is a demo.
I'll probably finally pick this up.
@NotoriousWhiz That would indeed answer some questions to which no matter how many opinions the internet has, it will never give me my answer. But I still wouldn't be able to justify paying this much for it then, when I could just grab my DS and still play it there. A demo could however show whether or not what the internet seems to generally say about it is something I'd agree with, and if not, it could make me want it more on a system I play more.
I remember going nuts rubbing the screen on my original DS in an airport playing this when it first came out. I probably looked like the biggest dork but it was too good of a game to care. Guessing this version doesn't require quite as much rubbing.
This came out right around the time Square Enix started making nothing but garbage. Unfortunately, it groups better with the garbage days of Square and not the glory days.
@burninmylight In my opinion, yes it is best in Handheld Mode. It's basically a better version of the mobile port. So to your question of what is the point? The graphics are much crisper. I was recently emulating the DS version (I own it, but got it in my head I wanted to play it via Drastic on my phone) and when I popped the Switch version back in I was surprised I had forgotten how nice it looks. It also has an awesome soundtrack. Tall order, as the game already had one of the best. And there's the extra scenario. Content -wise, it is hard to argue that better graphics, better OST, and bonus chapters are in any way NEGATIVES, right? As to controls, I think it is overblown a little. The docked controls are indeed trash. I've only used them so my son could play co-op with me. However, handheld is just like controlling Neku on the DS. The partner pin, mileage will vary how well you like that. But I will say that while I hit a rhythm with the DS version for controlling the too screen, it was never super intuitive for me. More something I adapted to and got decent at. Neku was my primary focus. He is who you control completely, who's skills you level and swap around, etc. The partner was always stationary while you tried to combo with them, and if you lost focus the AI would take over anyway! So Neku's combat is 100% intact here, and to me that was the meat and potatoes of the game to begin with.
Just my 2 cents!
I played the DS version. It's not a game that I really liked. It's weird and gameplay isn't as fun as it looks but I beat it. When you beat it overpowered green enemies appear but I didn't see the point.
