Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 20th - 26th July, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is back at number one yet again.
The game sold just under 100,000 physical copies last week, extending its lead as the best-selling Switch game in the region by another huge leap. Paper Mario: The Origami King now finds itself in third, selling another 50,000 copies.

That is 10% of the population of Japan. Noice.
Good week 2 sales for Paper Mario. Those Animal Crossing numbers are on another level though. Nearly 100k units in one week, four months in is crazy.
Sony is getting REKT by Nintendo!
Why would you physically release a free game? Unless it's dirt cheap and only for the cost of the cartridge and packaging. Or maybe it comes with free stuff like skins and items.
Just imagine how many Sea Bass have been caught by all these people.
Probably more than in existence on earth today... or throughout history!
@Hewitt I’d imagine it had some feature like the Season Pass included or free cosmetics.
Nice to see people enjoying Ninjala though.
Those XBox numbers have to be below the margin of error, right?
@Hewitt
It does. You can also buy the bundle digitally but for the sake of collecting, people like having physical versions of games like Ninjala. it's pretty fun too.
It's still hilarious seeing the Xbox One S and X combined not even reach 50 sales most of the time. How does the 3ds sell more than that?
Animal crossing is a beast, who knows how many more copies would have been sold if Switch consoles were more readily available.
@frabbit the figure is actually shipped to stores and not actually sold to individuals
@Entrr_username Japan just isn't interested in the XBOX. And the 3DS has thousands of great games. Especially in Japan.
Looks like they've started to get around the stock issues then...
@diwdiws,
Are you sure, I mean I understand this can be the case with consoles, but games, no point in a chart then.
@Entrr_username
Xbox doesn't have Kawaii games.
3DS has TONS of Kawaii games.
Majority of 3DS player like Kawaii games.
That's why Xbox is dead in Japan.
Kawaii = Cute in Japan
@diwdiws,
If you mean consoles I do not agree, there is little spare Switch stock to be had in Japan.
Always love the small numbe rin this charts… 49 new 3ds... you just can see someone walking into a little shop outside sapporoi and buying one left over...
That’s insane
PS4 sales have fallen off a cliff with PS5 looming. As expected I guess. We really need an announcement piped directly to us with all the upcoming games Big N to detract from PS5 Hype. Are you listening big N? Hello...?!!!!
@beazlen1
PS4 sales have fallen off a cliff since a long time ago.
@Entrr_username I'm guessing the only Xbox buyers in Japan are US military stationed out there.
@MrBlacky yeh ok so they fell off the cliff a while back and now they’ve smashed into the rocks
Stop, stop, stop, Animal Crossing! Can’t you see that you’ve already won!
@Entrr_username exclusives.
Almost all exclusives on Xbox are shooters, a genre the whole of Japan detest. They hate violence.
@beazlen1 they are . First let Sony blow all their confetti. They still have a state of play in August, and they have to reveal the pricepoint and release date.
Then overtake with Switch exclusives and a price drop for the Switch.
"surpass 12 million"
but actually 14.4 million including the Lite (which is still a Switch)
I'd imagine Ghost of Tsushima would have done similar numbers were it not for stock shortages. Shame really, but I'm sure it'll sell loads again once that's sorted out. Animal Crossings high sales after 4 months is impressive though
Best-selling games of all time in Japan (retail sales only):
1) [NGB] Pokémon Red/Green/Blue: 10.23 million
2) [NGB] Pokémon Gold/Silver: 7.17 million
3) [NES] Super Mario Bros: 6.81 million
4) [NDS] New Super Mario Bros: 6.43 million
5) [NDS] Pokémon Diamond/Pearl: 5.83 million
6) [NDS] Pokémon Black/White: 5.54 million
7) [GBA] Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire: 5.34 million
8) [NSW] Animal Crossing New Horizons: 5.28 million
Animal Crossing New Horizons has surpassed Wild World to become the best-selling retail game in the franchise. It should outsell Ruby/Sapphire by next week.
@Friendly source?
Over 100k Switch units sold in a week without a huge release that week? Damn.
Sony is doing absolutely terrible in Japan now.
I encourage anyone to look at PS3 sales around the time the PS4 was about to be released.
The numbers were not abysmal like what were seeing today and I don't necessarily think it's all due to Sony's new console getting ready to come out.
The PS5 might be in trouble in Japan.
The Switch sold more in Japan in 3 years, than the PS4 did in 7, that's really impressive.
And from what I can tell, it's outpacing PS4 sales globally too. If it can keep pace another 4 years it should easily outsell the PS4.
is very impressive that Animal Crossing New Horizons continues to sell well 4 months after it release on march 20th, could Animal Crossing New Horizons be the game that will finally destrone or become come to destrone Mario Kart 8 Deluxe? and Switch be the second console of Nintendo after Wii to reach 100 m or surpass this milestone.
i'm curious to know what is the current worldwide sales total of Switch and Animal Crossing New Horizons?the last time Nintendo updated they sales results, Animal Crossing New Horizons was at 13.44 milions units sold and Switch was at 55.44 milions consoles sold so far, i'm curious to know if Animal Crossing New Horizons is close or have destroned Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as the highest/best selling Switch game?
the Save Data Backup feature and the possibilty of the return of the Brewster and the Roost vastly expanded acting like a real cafeteria/Restaurant maybe in the upcoming Fall update for the game, may be the reason why Animal Crossing New Horizons sold so well in the previous week, i expect Animal Crossing New Horizons to have another excelent week of sales, if Nintendo reveal that the Fall update for the game will finally add Bulk Crafting and a Durabity Meter to our Tools to show how long our Tools last and the return of beloved character such as Brewster and Kapp'n.
@Krull Animal Crossing New Horizons will only stop until it destrone Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and become the highest/best selling Switch game, i expect another boost in the game sales, when Nintendo reveal that the upcoming Fall update will finally add Bulk Crafting and a Durabity Meter to our Tools to show how long our Tools last and the return of beloved character such as Brewster and Kapp'n to the game
@Entrr_username is because 3DS/Switch have a lot of games that apeal to the tastes of 3DS/Switch Japanese Gamers, Xbox don't have games that apeal to the tastes of japanese Gamers, that why Animal Crossing New Horizons is still selling well 4 months after it release on march 20th, Animal Crossing New Horizons have a lot of elements that Japanese Gamers like.
@Giancarlothomaz You're in luck. You will get worldwide sales numbers for AC on August 6 when the financial report is released. Nintendo is also going tell us how much AC have sold in Japan since April (including digital sales).
@Kanbolara i see thank for clarifiring this to me.
My eyes literally went 😳 when I scrolled down and saw the hardware sales! 😂
@diwdiws for which comment? About Japanese not liking shooters? More or less common knowledge that they detest violence.
About Nintendo holding off? My feeling that they are for the reason I mentioned
@Giancarlothomaz
New Horizons reached 13.4 million copies sold in Japan + USA + Europe by the end of April, which implies ~15 million copies sold worldwide by then. By now, the game should be nearing 20 million copies sold worldwide.
With that being said, surpassing Mario Kart 8 DX in global sales will be difficult, as Mario Kart continues to maintain incredible legs (especially in Europe) and will likely get Black Friday/Christmas bundles to further boost its sales.
But the fact that we are even having a conversation of Animal Crossing surpassing Mario Kart in sales is pretty remarkable. Goes to show how much the brand has grown over the last year.
@Friendly common knowlege?
Animal crossing is more popular than Pokemon. It makes me a little sad
@westman98 that right is very impressive, that Animal Crossing New Horizons managed to outsold all the previous Animal Crossing games just in the year it was released, but nothing stop me for hoping Animal Crossing New Horizons to become the highest/best selling Switch game or become close to be the highest/best selling Switch game.
Well, AC is pretty awesome, I can understand the crazy sales ♡
@Hewitt for one it would safe space since youre not force to download it, not gonna lie, I would love to have a solid copy just for that alone, and who knows they might throw in some exclusive stuff too they usually do =:3
@Friendly No, they hate FPS not violence, not a big fan my, ( I just prefer send my character) My most favorite violent games, movies to even shows (anime) are from Japan. Heck even their shows tend to take things a tad to far compare to the west =
@Quix true, just remembered that Battle Royal is Japanese.
@Friendly Look you're not wrong but the thing is nobody openly comes out as condoning violence, every country lives up to appearances and uphold their highh social status, every country has its own form of censorship, and Japan is no different. But doesn't mean developers won't find away around it or have to follow set of rules to be able to publish such material. Is a huge market and what way or another "we all like to soak our feet in the devil's water" =
If I ever get to live in Japan, I'm gonna buy an Xbox just for the lulz, to be one of those 20 people that week.
Imagine the Xbox community in Japan. They must literally know one another. Must be fun. xD
