We might well be used to seeing Mario and Sonic join forces these days, celebrating (almost) every Olympic Games event since 2008 with an official Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games release, but this year, the blue blur's also doing things his own way.
Joining Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, which launched for Switch last November, is the similarly named Sonic at the Olympic Games - Tokyo 2020 - a mobile title from Sega. It's launching today across Google Play, App Store and Amazon Appstore and features popular characters from the Sonic series as well as 15 Olympic Games events.
It's weird seeing Sonic and co. taking on all of these events without Mario, isn't it?
Interestingly, thanks to the ongoing global pandemic, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (and now this new Sonic title) will be the first game in the series to be based on an event which didn't take place in the year stated in-game. The real Tokyo event has been pushed back to 2021.
Are you tempted to check out Sonic's mobile Olympic offering? Or will you stick to the big screen experience on Switch? Let us know in the usual place.

I'm pretty sure Sonic has already had non-Mario variants of previous olympic games as well so this is nothing new.
I guess Sonic and co. don't take social distancing as seriously as everyone in the Mushroom Kingdom does...
Why don't they just change the name to 2021?
@Moon probably safer to change it to 2022 tbh
Nintendo should do the same. We don't want Sonic, we want Kirby in the Tokyo Olympics. Add Samus, Link, Zelda, and a whole bunch of Fire Emblem guys too.
They've done this for every Mario and Sonic game, it's not new - it's only getting more attention because of the increasing popularity of mobile games.
My immediate reaction to the title "sonic ditched mario" was "oh" in a sad voice lol not that I play these games just thought sonic was being a bit harsh for a moment there until I came back to reality
@Moon Weirdly, the actual Tokyo Olympics taking place in 2021 is still being branded as the "Tokyo 2020 Olympics". Probably easier than reprinting everything, I guess.
SEGA, bro... Those games likely sold more cause of the plumber's face, not yours.
@May_Nyan They’ve said they’re going to cancel the whole games if they don’t take place next year so it’ll be 2021 or bust.
@Paraka the game actually has almost 2 million pre-registrations in Japan
@Moon Because no matter when they take place, they're still the 2020 edition of the Olympic Games
He didn't ditch him - he just left him in the dust. Sonic runs a lot faster than Mario.
@ToonStuff - And? Pocket Camp had a massive pre-reg too, but we know how most of that community received it before.
Knowing all other SEGA mobile outings, this will be seen as lacking and stopped.
It's probably a licensing thing, Nintendo did not want to license the Super Mario IP for a game not being released on their own system.
It'd be different if Nintendo were developing or publishing such a mobile game with their IP, but yeah, the Mario & Sonic Olympic titles have always been a SEGA product.
@TheWingedAvenger A trash character and a has-been can’t leave the world famous Mario in the dust. Mario doesn’t want to hang out with a character that has 90% trash games and can’t ever bring anything new to the table. Glad Nintendo caught on to the damage this non-inspiring and boring series is doing to Mario.
Oh dear. I feel like this won't sell nearly as well as if it had Mario in it ...
@TheLightSpirit
You'd be surprised how well Sonic games do on mobile. Particularly the endless runner ones.
I was so confused until I read the word "mobile" then it all made sense
I already have Mario & Sonic Tokyo 2020 on my Switch, so I'm good. Besides, I'm not a mobile player...
What the hell is this crap?
Sega: You know how Nintendo already made an Olympic game that sold poorly, has better characters which includes our own, and is based on an Olympics that isn’t even happening?
Everybody on the planet: Yes.....
Sega: Darn... we hoped you didn’t know any of that...
if shadow is in this, then its a maybe, if not then its a definite no
@ummyeahnintendo : You took the bait.
I'm pretty sure there was at least one other Sonic at the Olympics game a few years ago that was released on mobile, so this release isn't unprecedented. Frankly, I'm a little surprised that Sega hadn't opted to release a Mario-less version of the game on consoles.
@Tendogamerxxx: I still don't understand Sonic fans and their undying love for mediocrity. Even Sonic's better games absolutely pale in comparison to, say, Nintendo's less stellar offerings.
And simply from a design perspective, the Sonic games are awful and unfair unless one has somehow memorised the layout of the levels, which has put me off completely from ever seeing a Sonic game to completion.
Jazz Jazzrabbit, by Epic Games in the early 90s, appears to have been inspired by Sonic with its fast-moving protagonist and gameplay, and I think has been designed far, far better than any Sonic game that I have ever played.
Unfortunately, Epic retired Jazz after only two installments (and a third party developed game on GBA), but I thought the games were mostly excellent and very, very underrated. Considering how profitable trash like Fortnite is though, I can't see Epic revisiting Jazz, at least not any time soon.
I feel like this game will do well to be honest
good sega we dont need fat ass bland plummer in a sport game
@mesome713 i lost you at fire emblem part
@RPGamer dude do you have a brain cells you admit you dont like sonic so why you want nintendo to buy him also nintendo have a dozen of dead characters they should revive them first and assure quality for pokemon and kirby games. also sonic had more sales than any nintendo franchise except mario and pokemon
@Silly_G same goes to nintendo fans they play the same mario game over and over and the same pokemon game release every years you can not judge other fandoms
@TheLightSpirit sonic dash alone had over 409 millions downloads all sonic mobile games had 790 millions downloads . nintendo also will have more mobile games in future because money
@RPGamer You said everything that needed to be said about Sonic. Train wreck of a series! That’s the first thing that comes to mind when I hear the name Sonic. If it wasn’t for nostalgia, Sonic would’ve gone the way the if Bubsy. I still can’t believe that trash made it into Smash bros. It doesn’t deserve to be there...
Does not count if it's a mobile title.
Doesn't seem like the sort of thing to take offense to.
