To promote the release of Trials of Mana on the Nintendo Switch this week, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is hosting a limited-time spirit event that adds three new and appropriately-themed spirits to the game.
The event lasts a total of five days and is now officially live. Defeating each of the spirits in battle will earn you more SP than usual. Below is a look at each one on offer, and above is some promotional artwork from the official Japanese Smash Bros. Twitter account. Will you be participating? Leave a comment down below.

Smash Bros raking in that advertizing dough from other games. Can't blame them though, I'd take their money too.
I want Riesz the amazon in Smash!
Meanwhile, a certain other Square Enix series with a playable character has zilch for spirits.
Would be nice if Square Enix put the Collection of Mana on sale that week too so some players could try the retro version of Trials of Mana before they get into the remake.
@retro_player_77
I believe if you prebuy the remake right now, you can get Collection of Mana for 70% off.
I want Trials, but I swear my backlog is beating me up. Oh wait I have it preordered. I’ma just go cry in a corner.
This is amazing when you consider Mana isn't even that popular compared to Square's other properties such as Kingdom Hearts and Tomb Raider. You'd think they'd get Spirits or something first. I love it when they promote more niche things because Trials deserves to be well known so the remake does well so Mana can get new games.
Having played the demo, I can't wait! Hawkeye is the best!
@JR150 Well Tomb Raider and Kingdom Hearts are not on Switch so yeah as popular as they were if you don't support Nintendo then Nintendo won't help market your IP on their product. It's just that simple.
@retro_player_77 pre-order trails of mana and you get a discount of the collection.
Yes.... I love collecting the spirits
@retro_player_77
But then you have Square Enix properties that are on Switch such as Romancing Saga and Star Ocean. Those are talked about way more often than Mana is. My point is that Smash is awesome for making a lesser franchise more relevant.
Spirits of square enix guys in smash gives at least 0.0001% of hope for guys like geno and/or sora for smash...right?
So when's Crono going to be a fighter?
@JR150 Star Ocean maybe but hardly anyone knew of Romancing SaGa. The SaGa series as a whole weren't as talk about or well known compare to the Mana series were. One reason being not all SaGa games were release stateside compare to the Mana games and even though the SaGa games are starting to get recognize in the west, the Mana games were more well known especially to the Nintendo audience more so than the SaGa games as tons of main and spinoff Mana titles all got release in the west.
@Liam_Doolan When is NL's review of ToM coming? 🙂
@Quarth It should be going live later today around 4 PM BST.
I'm still salty that i missed out on the Ring Fit Adventures spirit event...
@Liam_Doolan Thanks!
@retro_player_77 Joker in Smash Ultimate says otherwise (and Yes I know and own Persona Q2 but come on that barely counts)
@PLATINUM7
Well if you think about it, Mana is a spin-off of Final Fantasy. The first Mana game was called Final Fantasy Adventure and from then on they were titled "___ of Mana."
So you could sorta count these as FF spirits in that regard.
This is great. I absolutely love this Square Enix/Nintendo friendship. They're the 3rd party developer I love seeing most supporting Switch. A far cry from the late 90s relationship Square had with Nintendo. Here's hoping for lots more from this relationship.
I hope these spirits boost interest in the game. I’m really looking forward to Trials of Mana, because Secret of Mana is a fantastic RPG and the sequel to it was never originally localised until the Collection of Mana last year. Just the fact we’re receiving a full remake of that game on top of that, is really intriguing to me and it almost feels like Square Enix going above and beyond. Heck, the remake looks so impressive that when it was initially unveiled I thought it was a new entry in the Mana series. I mean it pretty much has April to itself, so I hope it performs successfully.
Us, the Nintendo fans: "Whoa, a big multiplatform hit is going to be released on consoles... and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, of all games, is getting exclusive content! Square-Enix, I'm sorry for what I said about the Final Fantasy content. I mean... the entire playable cast in Smash as Spirits? That's so cool!"
Square-Enix: "G R O U P E D____S P I R I T S"
Us: "... well, of course there's a catch..."
I’d welcome some Octopath Traveller spirits as well.
@JR150 Actually (pushes glasses further up on nose) it was always its own series, known as Seiken Densetsu in Japan. The first game was rebranded as Final Fantasy Adventure in the west and Seiken Densetsu 2 became Secret of Mana.
@PapaPedro

Except you do realize that the first game was titled "Seiken Densetsu: Final Fantasy Gaiden" in Japan, right? It started off as a FF-adjacent game with things like Chocobos and eventually became its own thing sure, but without FF, it wouldn't exist.
@JR150 I stand corrected!
Wow. Galeem's omniversal attack hit even the Trials of Mana world. Nothing to worry, though. Soon the Super Smashers will save the ToM heroes.
Great! I really love the art in the Mana series! Be it the old or the new ones
So colorful and detailed
@Chibi_Manny Don't feel so bad. I'm still kicking myself over missing the Cuphead spirits.
As soon as I collect every Spirit, of course there's another event. Not that I find that to be a bad thing, mind you...
@Chibi_Manny The Ring Fit spirits are already in rotation. I saw Ring when shuffling for Spirits I didn't have yet. This goes for a few other events as well, like the Resident Evil and even the New Horizons spirits.
@the_beaver Not going to happen. If he/she/they are a Spirit then they aren't going to be a Fighter. Maybe we'll get a Mii Fighter costume but that's it.
These are the factually correct pairings for the game's storylines.
I really hope they add this character in smashbros as DLC
@JR150 Does it really matter though. Both are made by the same company. And most of Square Enix' RPGs follow a similar set of rules. It's like saying "without The Legend of Zelda there wouldn't be Super Mario Bros"
@PLATINUM7 cloud has a spirit?
I suspected some of the characters on the main artwork were going to be the spirits.
My hierarchy theory holds up pretty well so far. Here's the one for Square Enix:
Final Fantasy > Dragon Quest > Mana series > Chrono Trigger > TAITO / Bubble Bobble > the Quintet trilogy > Marina Liteyears > the rest (other Final Fantasy games / Tomb Raider / etc.)
I hope it just continues like that. The safest and fairest.

Duran team was definitely the hardest.
