The PlatinumGames news just keeps coming, as we now have confirmation of The Wonderful 101: Remastered's release date on Nintendo Switch.
The game's set to launch in North America on 19th May, in Europe on 22nd May, and slightly later in Japan on 11th June. It's hard to believe that a Kickstarter was really necessary if the game's essentially finished already anyway, but there we are.
The Kickstarter for the game is still running, of course, so if you want to secure your copy you can do so via the campaign if you like. It's now raised more than $1.7million and has smashed a number of stretch goals.
If you missed the news earlier today, PlatinumGames has also revealed a brand new game called Project GG. The teaser trailer looks pretty epic.

UNITE HYPE!
Awesome. Didn't even have a Wii U, so this is welcomed.
Okay then the money invested was to hire a separate team to handle the whole process to bring this port out?
Either way the turnaround time is awesome!
Wait, anyone else feel like this all happened too fast?
@Kalmaro Presumably all these stretch goals have already been implemented anyway as there is not enough time to make any significant changes to the game between now and May. The game must be pretty much finished already.
Edit: I see the stretch goals will be added at a later date. Regardless it is pretty clear that this game was ready to go whatever the Kickstarter result. Why use crowdfunding then? Publicity? Needed short term funds? Whatever the reason it has certainly worked for them. Fair play.
Is the Kickstarter the only way to acquire a physical edition of the game? Or is it just for a special cover and special editions and/or extras?
Where is our Nintendo Direct?
Whelp, and this morning I backed to get the physical copy of the game.
A pretty bad move if everything is implemented and they will cut if any stretch goal is not reached.
But I guess I'll enjoy the game anyways. Platinum never disappointed me, and I did not get The Wonderful 101 during Wii U days.
@liljmoore This!
Yesterday's trio of strange announcements and then this? What is going on at Nintendo?
It's certainly weird, but I hope the game will be available on normal stores, physically I mean.
@Moroboshi876 @Lugazz
I'm pretty sure that the game is getting a wider physical release, but the Kickstarter backers will get a backer-edition physical release.
The ROM on the cartridge will probably be identical, but it'll probably have a unique cover and maybe something extra in the box like a DLC code or thank you message or something.
@KingBowser86 I don't mean to highjack the article cause I'm looking forward to 101.
But why has Ninty been so silence
@Ooccoo_Jr No, all the stretch goals are being delivered as free DLC in November.
@liljmoore Same. I'm working off of the rumors that correctly called AC's Direct on the 20th.
@Kalmaro Oh no yea this happened WAY too fast. If it was just a port of the game then this would be reasonable. But this isn't just a port, it's a remaster which has to find a gameplay work around due to the WiiU gamepad, then they have to work on ALL of the new systems they're porting too (Which is not a simple task btw), then they have to upgrade the visuals and assets (Which even though its mostly reused assets its still a time-consuming process), and then after all of that they now have new features and modes to implement thanks to the Kickstarter goals. And if you think thats a walk in the park then keep in mind the new modes are 2D platformers, a complete contrast to rest of the game. Meaning those new modes will have to be designed differently from the rest of the game, needing entirely new code to implement, and possibly even a ton of new assets. And keep in mind a game needs roughly a month in advance for approval and the other technical setups. So by this logic, they would only have 2 months to do ALL OF THAT!!! (Also keep in mind that Platinum games isn't a very big studio, but they have several games in production right now stretching across their few dev teams.) So this game has to have been in production for a while, atleast a couple more months. Its highly unlikely they just started working on the game after the stretch goals were reached, they wouldn't be able to make a solid release date in so very little time.
hmm, physical copies avaliable? or will it be digital only i wonder. 🤔
@link3710 Oh I see, thanks for the correction.
Still unsure whether to back this. I got the original for WiiU but for whatever reason never got round to playing it. I love the art style though.
Oh cool I always wanted to play this. Awesome how it'll even be releasing on my birthday.
@huyi If you back the Kickstarter you can get physical for only a couple of quid extra. Well worth it imo.
This is amazing! This is wonderful! This is fantastic! ❤️ I am so happy to finally get a chance to play this in its entirety on my Switch! (Wonderful 101 for Smash please?)
While I'm glad there's a confirmed release date, I'm a little surprised that Japan is getting it later.
As this is my first Kickstarter does anyone know who has backed a few when am I likely to get my account debited for my .... preorder?
The kickstarter was a marketing campaign to generate publicity and pre-orders on a game they were already releasing. It's kind of genius... but I'm sympathetic to those who view this as a slippery manipulation of what kickstarter is actually intended to do.
So I wonder if Nintendo is considering this their big May game then? And now they wont' feel the need to tell us anything new until E3 after ACNH, Pokemon MD RT DX and this.
@Grumblevolcano Are you the person I was always discussing what Nintnedo's big May game would be? Usually Mario Kart. Their calendar seems thin for 2020. I know there is a lot of 3rd party stuff but still, what are they doing? Hasn't been a new 3DS game in a year or so, gotta be working on something.
The "Upcoming Games" list is pretty much all indies all the time.
https://www.nintendolife.com/games/browse?status=upcoming&sort=date
@rjejr Funny thing is the person who leaked the Animal Crossing Direct ahead of time say another Indie Direct is on the horizon, I believe it was for March. But that person also said a Nintendo Direct was going to happen in the next few days, so we'll see what happens
@rjejr Given it's multiplatform now, I don't think so. I think the big Q2 release will be Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition. It was announced in the September Direct and there's only 4 games from that Direct which don't have release dates (Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, The Outer Worlds, Deadly Premonition 2 and Rogue Company). I could see Nintendo potentially do a "twitter direct" for those 4 and then have a general Direct in April.
@Grumblevolcano Thank you, I knew I could count on you, you've always been on top of this stuff.
XC is quite possibly the greatest game I've ever played, but I don't have 150 hours to put into it again, so I'm not looking forward to it. And it's as much as a port as this is.
Pokemon port, W101 port, XC port. I'd be ok w/ that in year 1, ports make money to make new games, but by year 3 a new console needs a wee bit more. Which I'm sure you'd agree w/.
XC:DE is probably it though, no shame it that I suppose, it's great. Better not be a Gamestop exclusive though.
@patbacknitro18 Says we'll get a ND in the next few days. I'm not ruling it out. Well I'm ruling out this week, they'll let us now early Japan time w/ 48 hours notice, but it could still happen. I'll still on the 3/3 bus for the 3 year Switch anniversary which they could announce Friday or Monday w/ only 24 hours notice. People are gonna lose their stuff if the next Direct is another Nindie. Switch will be smashed and thrown out of windows.
Seems a little late to announce a AAA game for May anyway. But E3 is also too late for a new game in August and September. April could work I guess. But it better be the best ND ever by then.
@Kalmaro This is apparently Platinum's first time self-publishing a title, so if they did have stuff ready (Kamiya keeps implying that they've had W101 at the back of their minds for a while, and had ideas for a sequel) this is probably just to help with funding, and maybe the extras given out. The original goal was just shy of $50,000, so it seems like they were ready to have the bare minimum of support. It's funny in retrospect, but with Platinums game's usually being kind of niche, it's a reasonable idea to consider.
might pick it up since its not a full price game
File size by any chance?
@FX102A It's going to be released physically at retail as well I believe but backers will also get access to free DLC and other extras
I see it as more funding for the game to go multiplat. They already mentioned that they spoke to Nintendo about the game and were told if they wanted to go multiplat Nintendo wouldn't publish so they likely were nearly done with the switch version. The rest is to port multiplat and the added missions.
Yeah. It's pretty obvious the Kickstarter wasn't actually for this game. It was probably for China. 🤔
@Andrew5678 I was going to say this. Platinum makes some great games and a few highly successful games, but they have not self-published (I don't think?). They rely on others to get the upfront money for projects. This is a low-cost project, but even then, they probably just needed some upfront cash to get it done. People don't just market and manufacture games with an IOU. Someone has to front the cash.
I like that Platinum is experimenting with crowdfunding, myself. They should keep some flexibility and variety in who ultimately decides what can and can't be made.
@aaronsullivan Agreed. As much as I understand the tradeoffs of having a publisher (the funding traditionally gives them ownership and influence of the product) I see why Platinum's ready to be its own boss, exclusively with their own vision. As for crowdfunding... well, Platinum's earned the confidence of its audience, and like I said, they have good reason to seek external funding since they wanted to port W101 to other consoles, and it coincides with Project GG, Platinum trying to be more independent. It could be abused by others, but that's most likely not the case here.
Fingers crossed, I really do wish them the best for this and their other projects (definitely in no part because I backed the Kickstarter myself, lol). They're a great company, and deserve so much more recognition than they ever get.
@Lugazz I think you're misunderstanding how this all works. Just because the stretch goal DLC won't be ready on release date doesn't mean us backers won't get it. Look at Shovel Knight, they reached a bunch of stretch goals and although it took a long time the backers got it all
@leo13 I do understand it, no worries. My comment was regarding the idea that "everything is already done" as the launch date is soon, as some others wrote.
But as @link3710 mentioned, the stretch goals will be delivered later as DLC.
By the way, nice that we reached the Remix Soundtrack goal! And having Luka's Second Mission will add even more value to the game, but I guess that won't happen.
@Lugazz sorry I guess I misunderstood what you were saying
