As news emerges that Japanese schools are to close until April due to the recent coronavirus outbreak, The Pokémon Company has stated that it will be cancelling a series of live events at its Pokémon Stores across the country.
As of February 29th, 2020, the following events have been called off until further notice:
- Pokémon Bingo Party (All Stores)
- Pokémon Mascot Meet-and-Greet (All Stores)
- Pokémon Center Mega Tokyo Renewal Commemorative Mascot Meet-and-Greet
- Pokémon Center Kyoto 1 Year Anniversary Mascot Meet-and-Greet
- All Pokémon Workshops (All Stores)
The company has also said that Pokémon TCG events at Pokémon Centers and Pokemon Store locations across Japan may be cancelled as well. However, it's worth noting that all stores and centers remain open as normal until further notice.
The number of confirmed COVID-19 virus patients in Japan has risen above 200 as of Thursday evening.

It's a shame, but really it's better to be safe than sorry with these kind of things. I see a lot of people claiming that the media is overreacting, and while that is certainly the case, it's far better to be overly cautious than the alternative in this situation.
Better safe than sorry.
Healthy and safety first.
Let's pray so Corona virus epidemic can be stopped and infected peoples can be cured.
That explains why nothing was happening at the Pokémon Centre today in Shibuya... I assumed something would happen as it’s Pokémon Day. Next year is the 25th anniversary so I’m sure they’ll be something then.
It’s getting worse by the day. Over 1500 in Korea as well.
Living in China now and was hoping for the best a month ago, but it’s out of control. People are definitely taking precautions, so that’s about all you can do.
Really hope this all blows over soon, but I'm sure there's a long way to go before the virus is neutralized, and it's bound to spread more as well...
Japan closed schools down too to try and contain it. I wonder how this is affecting Nintendo. I know there a stock shortages on Switch, but as far as development goes I wonder if we will see game delays coming out of Japan. I’m sure most businesses will urge sick workers to stay home if they already haven’t.
@Desrever whoever stated the media is over reacting is full of bs the coronavirus is spreading and alrdy has claimed nearly 3k lives mostly people with weak immune systems are getting hit the worst.
Impeach Shinzo Abe
Better safe then sorry.
@Desrever @RiasGremory Whether the media is overreacting or not, the news today that people that have already recovered from Covid19 can & have become infected again is bad news.
I work in a Japanese JHS. There is mild panic as the order came down without much in the way of details. Some teachers are actually suggesting we ignore it because it was worded like so politely you could argue it was more of a "suggestion".
@Anti-Matter some people who had coronavirus actually recovered from it so that's kinda a good sign
Gaming is dead. It's just dead. Time to move on. I had hopes for F-Zero, but that's never gonna happen. This is just going to get worse and worse. I was hoping for 2020 to be a good year for games... But only 2 games are coming that I am hyped for. Releases are gonna be very barren from here on out.
